Today I am thankful for ________.

In honor of Memorial Day coming up, I thought we’d reflect on a few things we’re grateful for.

And getting the day off can count as one if you’d like :)

Take a few seconds and answer the following three questions with money, life, and career in mind:

  1. Today I am thankful for _____.
  2. Today I am thankful for _____.
  3. Today I am thankful for _____.

Wait, but they’re the same?

Yup – you’ve had your coffee this morning! Answer them all relating to your money, life, and career.

I don’t get it?

MONEY. LIFE. CAREER.

Huh?

Forget it.

Here are mine :)

#1. Today I am thankful for getting my spending under control. It’s amazing how doing just that can ripple across your finances and forever change them. And it barely affects your lifestyle!

#2. Today I am thankful for my two little boys! Who continually surprise me with how thoughtful and affectionate they are. Came home to this the other night and almost melted:

love you daddy chalk

#3. Today I am thankful for clarity. I’ve been struggling lately with my long term “purpose” in terms of projects/career, and slowly but surely the light bulbs are going off and leading me down the right path… Or at least I’m hoping it’s the right path – never know where your thoughts can lead you! ;)

What are you thankful for today?

PS: Best $7.00 spent up there with those play houses… Thanks Goodwill!

1 Today I am thankful for finding YNAB. My wife and I would be nowhere near where we are financially without it. We got it right after we started using credit cards, and that helped a ton. There were a few bills where we both hadn’t discussed purchases well, had to figure out where cash was coming from. Super stressful. That never happens now, or if it does, the stress is pushed a month earlier than when we need the cash!
2 Today I am thankful for my girls. Wife and 2 daughters. They make the day’s much more vivid.
3 Today I am thankful for opportunity. I took a shot at my current position but have enough financial security to be direct about what I want to do at work. The work tail isn’t going to wag this dog.

    1. J. Money May 27, 2016 at 6:58 AM

rock on, man! agree YNAB is a game changer.

  2. Prudence Debtfree May 27, 2016 at 6:04 AM

    1. Today I am grateful for being out of all non-mortgage debt, for having an e-fund, and for being close to the 6-figure mark for the mortgage ($106,000 to go.) What a change over a few years!!
    2. Today I am grateful that our 3 daughters are growing into wise, happy, independent young women.
    3. Today I am happy that I have a job that allows me to take 7 students to a homeless shelter to volunteer – as a field trip. That’s what I’m off to today : )

    1. J. Money May 27, 2016 at 6:59 AM

SO COOL!!!! I want to go!!! :)

1.Today I am grateful for being out of consumer debt and having a plan for our money. It helped us survive a job loss last year.
    2. Today I am grateful that our three children are involved in our money discussions, and know so much more as teenagers than we ever did in our 30s about money.
    3. Today I am grateful for a new job that provides a better work/life balance and gives me the time to peruse other opportunities and more time to spend with my family.

    1. J. Money May 27, 2016 at 6:59 AM

Sounds like a beautiful life :)

  4. Whiskey May 27, 2016 at 6:59 AM

    Thankful for:
1 – 2 strong healthy sons that are their own persons
2 – A job that pays me enough to not want or need / allows me to plan for the future
3 – An area of the country to live in that I don’t put up with the BS of city life and doesn’t’ cost an arm and a leg.

    1. J. Money May 27, 2016 at 7:02 AM

      Preach on!

  5. Linda @ Brooklyn Bread May 27, 2016 at 7:16 AM

I’m so grateful to finally be debt free. I’m grateful that my children are healthy and seem to have a naturally happy and optimistic attitude- major implications for having a quality life that doesn’t revolve around getting stuff. I’m grateful that this was the year I became a lot more aware of my bad money habits and found advice that is helping me to truly change my ways. (And for sure about YNAB!)

  6. John C @ Action Economics May 27, 2016 at 7:34 AM

I am thankful for the way in which my job is structured, allowing me to have the entire summer off work. Makes for a very good work/life balance.

  10. Latoya @ Femme Frugality May 27, 2016 at 7:51 AM

Today I’m thankful for the fact that I woke up and had another chance to holler at the kiddos this morning (lol, no, but seriously), I’m thankful that I’m no longer burdened by credit card bills I’m unable to pay, and I’m thankful that I have a job!

  11. Free to Pursue May 27, 2016 at 8:02 AM

Take a few seconds and answer the following three questions with money, life, and career in mind:

Today I am thankful for never having to worry about having a full belly of good, nutritious food any time I want it.
Today I am thankful for being alive. Every day that we spend vertical as opposed to horizontal is a good day in my book.
Today I am thankful for all the opportunities I have to work with great people on so many projects. I’m humbled by their talent every day.

As for seeking purpose, you’re doing what creative guru Ken Robinson suggests: we have to try many things to truly know what we like and what we feel we’re good at and that this is always time well spent. You might like his book “The Element” and the follow up “Finding Your Element”. It’s only those who don’t seek who are assured never to find what they’re hoping to.

    1. Free to Pursue May 27, 2016 at 8:04 AM

Oh yeah, and friends and family…Duh! I guess they’re so ever-present to me it’s like being thankful for the air I breathe!

    2. J. Money May 29, 2016 at 4:03 PM

Thanks for that :) I def. feel like I’m on the right path with the online $$ chatting/helping stuff, just feel like something is missing for some reason… can’t put my finger on it yet, but in the mean time I am trying to experiment and chase stuff I enjoy/am good at/could be good at :) Never heard of that Ken guy but going to add to my list to check out. Thx!

        1. J. Money May 30, 2016 at 11:35 AM

Perfect! I try and watch one TED talk a night so will check his out tonight! :)

    1. Today I am thankful for realizing that money in and of itself is not evil (its merely a means to an end, not the end itself). Truly the only reason I want money is to buy my freedom, I don’t care at all about fancy cars and items of vanity, I just want to be free.
    2. Today I am thankful for my 3, soon to be 4 boys.
    3. Today I am thankful for making the right moves to eventually leave the rat race (Freedom).

    2. A healthy wife & daughter & an immediate family that helped us leave corporate. We couldn’t have done it without their help.
    3. A job that taught me the value of setting goals & accomplishing them.

  22. Kevin- The Debt Journey May 27, 2016 at 2:58 PM

    1) Today I am thankful for hitting the halfway point in paying off our debt. Seems like only yesterday we sat down and gathered all of our bills. Little did we know that this journey would change every aspect of our lives for the better.

    2) Today I am thankful for a wonderful wife who keeps me in check. Sometimes I get so into paying off debt, and I tend to worry a lot. But she is always there to remind me why we are doing this and how fortunate we truly are.

    3) Today I am thankful for a career that allows me to help people. While I don’t believe it will be my forever job, just knowing that what I do is affecting the lives of sick children really gives me all the reason to get up everyday,

Also most importantly I am thankful for the people that have fought and died so that we can pursue whatever dreams we may choose

Have a great Memorial Day Everyone!!
I’ll be at work wishing I was drinking a cold one!!!

Nice post J. I’m thankful for lots of things but reading through many of the blogs I subscribe to, I’m thankful for the way many of you share your personal, family moments and experiences with the big, wide world. I’m thankful for the great people I have met online in the short time I’ve been blogging and the community we all seem to be a part of.

I was just saying the other night to Ms MM, I wish I lived in neighbourhood with all of these people because it would be such a fun place to hang out.

So, a big thanks to all of you out there and have a great weekend.

    1. J. Money May 29, 2016 at 4:10 PM

Awww, it sure would be!!! It would probably be a community of tiny homes all surrounding a bank, haha, but boy would that be fun :)

    1. Today, I’m thankful for my body. A friend of mine was re-diagnosed with cancer and it’s a glaring reminder longevity isn’t promised to any of us.

    2. Today, I’m thankful that being debt free isn’t good enough for me. :) In the past year I’ve been able to still trim my budget by another $240 a month. Every little bit counts!

    3. Today, I’m thankful for blogs like yours J and other online forums where even an old woman in her 40s can learn about money and investing without shame.

  29. Keith Schindler May 28, 2016 at 9:51 AM

    Hey J-Bucks!!!

Your kids are super cute! Wish mine were still that young, that would mean I was younger too. :-) My oldest is about your age, I’m thinking.

    So, here are my three:

Money: I’m thankful that my wife and I are able to enjoy Flexible Financial Independence (Flex-Fi). Mandatory teacher retirement, investing early, and some windfalls have made it possible.

Life: I’m thankful for my loving wife, who has gone through SO much with me. That’s a LONG story that I’m not gonna bore anybody with. I’m thankful for my two great kids and their spouses. All are self-sufficient and none have been in jail, other than my son. He was in and out . . . when he was a bail bondsman. :-)

Career: I am thankful for my 27+ years as a teacher, counselor, and principal. It supported the family, provided for a mandatory retirement plan, and, most importantly, has filled my life with a bunch of good friends; former co-workers, former students, and their parents. I’m with you on purpose. I no longer have a job, but I still have the desire to help and teach others. Just trying to figure out this new game plan.

I’m still enjoying the podcasts you did with Paula P. I’m gonna miss you in the new ones. Oh well, you gotta do what’s right for you.

I’m still gonna pester you and steal good stuff from you.

    Keep On Keeping On!

    Shin

    1. J. Money May 29, 2016 at 4:13 PM

      Pester/steal away, good sir!

Too funny about your bondsman son, haha… This was a fun note to read :)

  30. Linda May 28, 2016 at 9:59 AM

    1. Today I am thankful that I eliminated my debt a few years ago and have been saving/investing like a madwoman ever since.
    2. Today I am thankful for a great sister-in-law. She was married to my brother, but he passed away from cancer six years ago They had a daughter, my only niece. Even though she has since remarried they are still a part of the family, making sure my niece grows up knowing her father’s family. I think she and my niece (and her new husband)see my parents more than I do!
    3. I am thankful that I was recently able to go from an overnight shift to a dayshift position at my job. I missed the sun!

    1. J. Money May 29, 2016 at 4:14 PM

Your sister-in-law sounds like a beautiful person :) Reflects a lot on your brother too! So sorry to hear :(

  31. Derek May 28, 2016 at 12:44 PM

Money: Thankful to have some. Thankful for the ability to earn more doing creative things I love while helping others.

Life: Thankful I am alive at all. Thankful I was born. Thankful I am healthy. Thankful for my parents and my family.

Career: Thankful to be doing something I love that gives my energy rather than drains me and makes me miserable.

Thanks for this post and the reminder! I often get frustrated with the way things are going and it’s always helpful to be reminded of just how awesome my life really is.

    1. J. Money May 29, 2016 at 4:17 PM

      You know it, brother :)

  32. Crystal May 30, 2016 at 5:07 PM

Awwww, your kids are so sweet!!!

1.Today I am thankful for having enough and bringing in enough continually.
2.Today I am thankful for my husband and our support network of friends and family.
3.Today I am thankful for rediscovering my love for blogging…it hadn’t gone away, it was just being smothered.

    1. J. Money June 2, 2016 at 8:30 AM

Awwwww, welcome back to the good blogging life! It goes in phases, especially when you’ve been blogging for so many years as you and I have :) I get in slumps all the time – you’re not alone!
