I was debating on whether to do a Five For Friday post today, or a Would You Rather, and then I stumbled across an awesome game by Savvy Sugar who pretty much mashed up both of them into one tight package! Woo!
They take it farther and compare like 50 other “would you rather spend your moneys here or there” type things, but I searched through them for a good 20 mins and picked out my favorites.Β After your done reading today’s post (and you want to waste even *more* time ;)), play their game and see how high you can go.Β I was sucking ‘cuz you have to guess what the majority of people would prefer, not you specifically :(Β And Lord knows there’s some crazy people out there!
Anyways, here are our 5 would you rathers to ponder today :)
Would you rather spend money on…
- Magazines or Cabs?
- iTunes or Eating Dinner Out?
- Road Trips or Recreational Sports?
- Netflix or Good Wine?
- Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions?
And here are MY answers:
- I’d rather spend my money on Magazines.Β D’uh. Though those cabs sure have been getting in my way lately! Haha… Now even better would be reading magazines IN the cabs :)
- I’d rather spend my money on Eating Dinner Out! I love poking through iTunes every now and then, especially in the middle working, but nowadays there are a ton of other FREE places to go like Pandora or Spotify, so I’d much rather enjoy my dinners out instead :) It’s nice to treat yourself, and the resident cook, from time to time.
- I’d rather spend my money on Recreational Sports. Which kills me cuz I absolutely LOVE road trips!!Β But how often do you truly take them, ya know? I’d much rather have my football and soccer on the weekends than a kick ass road trip once every few months (years?).
- I’d rather spend my money on Good Wine. But I’d much rather spend it on good BEER as I couldn’t taste the difference of great wine if my baby depended on it… Every taste test I go to I always chose the cheaper one as being the best. I think it’s in my blood.
- I’d rather spend my money on Retirement Fund Contributions!!Β Though to be fair I also hate concerts cuz you have to sit or stand there for a billion hours at a time… I’m too A.D.D. to take that :)Β I’d also probably put retirement contributions in front of ANY categories you sent me anyways – it’s all about the priorities!
Your turn! Which 5 would you pick over the others?? It’s too bad we don’t win any prizes for playing these kinds of games as I could do them all day and night ;)Β Maybe someone can sponsor our next one? And we’ll give out prizes to the best answers? Hmm… I’ma look into that. In the meantime, have yourself a splendid weekend and stay away from crazy mohawk-guys! I heard they’re pretty sneaky.

1. Magazines
2. Eating out
3. Road trips.
4. Netflix.
5. Retirement fund all the way!
I would rather spend money on magazines, eating dinner out, road trips, netflix, and retirement contributions. I am confident that I will learn a thing or two when reading magazines. Similarly, eating dinner out and watching movies from Netflix afterwards builds ties with my family. I love road trips! I love going to various places and visiting landmarks. I love music and watching these artists perform; however, concerts are just two-to-three-hour fun while my future depends on my retirement funds.
Magazines or Cabs? -Don’t really care for either – can I save up the cabs for when we go travelling??
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? – Dinner!
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? – Road trips, always.
Netflix or Good Wine? – Netflix, not that we can get it in NZ
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? – Ohhhh you know where to hit me. Well, I’ve sworn off concerts, but even if I hadn’t, Kiwisaver definitely needs more of my dollars. Retirement baby.
Magazines – Hard because neither are really that important to me.
Dinner Out – No dishes and no prep work!
Road Trips – I want to go on an epic road trip one day!
Netflix – Don’t care for wine.
Retirement – Not a concert fan but I’d probably pick this anyway :)
1. I don’t read magazines, so it would have to be cabs.
2. Eating out for me as well. I love a nice restaurant once in a while.
3. I would have to say recreational sports. I like sports and hate road trips. I drive way too much for my job and have taken too many road trips, so I usually fly anywhere I go now.
4. Netflix all the way baby! I don’t drink wine and I love movies!
5. Definitely retirement funds. I like concerts, but not more than saving.
1. Magazines or Cabs? I guess Cabs, since I don’t purchase magazines, but I also don’t live in a city where cabs make sense and the only time I really use them is when I go to Vegas, Chicago, NY
2. iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? Eating out. As much as I like music, spotify, pandora, etc make it free to listen to bascially what I want to.
3. Road Trips or Recreational Sports? Recreational sports. I am so stuck in on hurling right now it is sickening. That game is like crack and couldn’t give it up
4. Netflix or Good Wine? I don’t use netflix and a big oenophile. So wine would be the way to go. We already have a decent cellar (120+ bottles) so people love inviting us to dinner parties knowing we are the ones who will always bring a nice bottle!
5. Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? I’ll go with retirement savings since I only go to one concert a year (Buffett for the win!) and he probably won’t be touring too much longer
This was a fun combo I liked it!
Magazines! Who wants to go in a cab? Hahaha
Eating Dinner Out! I prefer Pandora.
Road Trips definitely.
Netflix. I always love a good relaxing night.
retirement funds of course :)
1. Neither magazines or cabs.
2. Sometimes iTunes – depends on what music I am craving that day!
3. Sports – road race fees at up!
4. Hulu! Netflix lost my love when they jacked the rates up…
5. Retirement funds. Concerts are too loud and totally overwhelm my senses in a bad way.
Magazines or Cabs?- Currently, cabs. I subscribed to the only magazine I read on a regular basis (Entertainment Weekly) a couple of weeks ago for $25 for two years. Any other magazines I’ll mooch off friends. But I currently live in the burbs when all my friends live dwntwn, so sometimes I need a cab.
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? Eating out. I brunch a lot.
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? Recreational Sports. I love going to soccer games in DC, and have started traveling to go watch DCU more. When I travel, I tend to save for an extended period of time and then go on a big trip. Like Antigua next month.
Netflix or Good Wine? Netflix. I don’t drink wine.
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? Concert tickets. I give pre-tax dollars to my retirement fund and raise the amount of my TSP with each raise I get.
Magazines – Most of the time i’m too cheap to take a cab
Eating Dinner Out – Can’t beat a good meal out
Road Trips – This was a tough one, but I love to travel
Good Wine – Im all about Redbox for the 2 movies I watch a month
Retirement Fund Contributions – I only go to one concert a year. I can go to more when Im padded nicely at retirement
1. Magazines – Most of the time i’m too cheap to take a cab
2. Eating Dinner Out – Can’t beat a good meal out
3. Road Trips – This was a tough one, but I love to travel
4. Good Wine – Im all about Redbox for the 2 movies I watch a month
5. Retirement Fund Contributions – I only go to one concert a year. I can go to more when Im padded nicely at retirement
1. Magazines – There aren’t many cabs in the suburbs where I live, but I love to read!
2. Eating Dinner Out – Of course I’d pick food!!
3. Road Trips – I have friends scattered all over the country, I’d love to visit them more!
4. Netflix – This was a close call, but Netflix won since I’m pregnant at the moment, so even if I spent my money on good wine, I’d feel guilty if I had more than a sip or two, so Netflix it is! ;-)
5. Retirement Fund Contributions – Ah, so this is why I feel like my taste in music has stagnated lately… :-P
Magazines, eating dinner out, road trips, good wine, and retirement fund contributions. These were easy for me. :)
1) Magazines or Cabs? Magazines fo sho…i’m currently obsessed with Fast Company magazine. J, you should totally create a “Budgets are Sexy” magazine! I’d buy it!
2) iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? for me, it’s 50/50. I’m such a music fiend, that I can’t help browsing iTunes from time to time. Right now, with my train of thought, food is just that, food…lately, I haven’t enjoyed eating out, as much. (lame)
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? If running races = recreational sports, then rec. sports for sure!
Netflix or Good Wine? I’m w/you, J–good beer! I’ve rediscovered the drinker in me, so I’m all about my beer…specifically Tecate w/limes
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? retirement funds contributions, hands down. Concert tickets are way too inflated, now
1) Considering there really is no use for cabs in this tiny town, I’m gonna go with magazines. You’d be proud, I subscribed to my first one through my iPad this week. It was very exciting. I get a few through work, but this is the first one I’ve subscribed to personally. :)
2) Ooooo. Hard one. I guess… eating out. I LOVE itunes and I”m slightly addicted. However, with the way my situation has been lately (which, I’ll have my housing situation solved by 6pm today! I’ll update you when I know for sure. YAY!) I’ve had to choose between these two. I choose eating out because that adds a bit of a social aspect to it and gives me an excuse to see people.
3) ROAD TRIPS! I’m not athletic… AT ALL. And I love a good road trip and seeing new places and meeting new people. Besides, I get to jam out to my favorite songs while driving and NO ONE can judge my music tastes.
4) NETFLIX. I love a good bottle of wine… but I haven’t been buying much lately (annoying story there) and I rarely go a day without using Netflix.
5) I guess it would have to depend on what band is playing. If it’s one of my all time favorite bands EVER, then concert tickets. But I honestly don’t go to concerts – mainly because this is a tiny town and nothing happens here. So I guess by default it would be retirement fund. Now if it was seeing plays and musicals vs. retirement… that would be a different story. ;)
Magazines-Not in an area I really need cabs.
Dinner out-It’s a luxury I haven’t really been able to spend money on in a long time.
Recreational Sports-I love a good road trip too, but my daily life involves more rec sports.
Netflix-I can drink cheap wine while watching netflix and be perfectly happy. :)
Retirement Fund Contributions-No brainer.
I’m going to be annoying and just pick road trips and wine. Pair them together and you’ve got yourself a good time! (that almost rhymed)
Oh I love would you rathers!
1) Magazines
2) Eating Dinner Out – I pay $10/month for Spotify so I stream all my music instead of purchase
3) Road Trips – Love road trips and haven’t been able to go on nearly enough the past few years.
4) Netflix – I love watching tv series, tho I have never used NetFlix. We get them free from the library instead.
5) Concert Tickets – YOLO : P
I am with you on every single one!
I love magazines, they are easy too read in small doses and go everywhere!
I love eating out, it is our hardest category to keep under budget. Mainly because I hate the clean up after cooking.
I do love road trips, but would rather stay healthy and active on a regular basis.
Wine, wine, wine, wine – sorry netflix would just never win.
Retirement because I want to sit back, relax read some magazines, eat out, take road trips, stay healthy and drink wine when I retire and I need cash for that! :)
Magazines or Cabs? – Cabs – most magazine subscriptions can be found for free online today
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? – dinner out. The music can wait ;)
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? – Road trips, I like to run which is pretty cheap.
Netflix or Good Wine? Netflix – I’m a fan of the $7.99 bottle
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? – Retirement…but I go to plenty of concerts ;)
magazines
Eating Out is a lot more fun for me.
Road Trips!
Good wine
Retirement. Yeah concerts are for young people. :)
Magazines- We don’t have cabs where I live.
Eating Out- I don’t use my mp3 player and music is free on Youtube so definitely eating out is the choice for me.
Road Trips- To go see recreational sports ha.
Netflix- Wine is gross
Retirement- Not too many bands I would want to see live and I really enjoy investing.
Magazines or Cabs? – Magazines.. I live in a small town
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? Itunes.. I like to cook too much!
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? Road Trips.. I want to see the US and I don’t like playing sports.
Netflix or Good Wine? Good Wine.. you can get up to date movies FREE by renting at your local library!
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? Retirement Fund.. because I am a good Dave Ramsey follower and really need to start focusing on what I want my retirement to look like!
Magazines – No cabs around here.
Eating Dinner Out – I miss being able to do this with friends.
Recreational Sports – Miss being active and hate road trips.
Netflix – Love movies and I don’t drink.
Retirement Fund Contributions – I’d like to be financial comfy in my old age and I’m not big on concerts anymore!
1) Magazines, because I love my magazines and I can always take the bus or subway or a van if I need to.
2) Eating Dinner Out because I get my music for FREE.99
3) Road Trips or Recreational Sports BOTH?? Is that an option. If I have to pick one probably road trips, because traveling is a longer experience, but I love me some football!
4) Can I say Blockbuster or Redbox? I like wine, but don’t drink enough to care and I don’t pay for subscriptions for anything other than magazines. That’s how I can afford school.
5) Retirement Fund Contributions definitely. I need to get my retirement fund up to speed and who gives a crap about concerts any more. No offense to those that do, I just feel I grew out of them. Besides with the laws allowing *ahem* medical marijuana everywhere, the concerts are worse than ever if you have asthma. Last time I went I got sick and had to stand out by the open area and miss the rest of the concert. I refused to go to any ever again.
Magazines or Cabs? Magazines. When I’ve been drinking I always think I can walk anywhere!
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? Eating Dinner out– I love going to restaurants.
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? Road Trips– I’m always down for traveling
Netflix or Good Wine? Netflix…cheap wine can accompany me. :)
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? ooh a hard one. I’ll do retirement fund.
1. Cabs – Chances are you are going somewhere fun. Plus, I can get free inspiration from Pinterest now instead of paying for magazines.
2. Eating Dinner Out – Way more fun and social. Plus, you can always get music from Pandora for free.
3. Both? Roadtrips to fun ski destinations – DREAMY!
4. Wine – not that I know anything about it. Maybe wine tasting somewhere fancy.
5. 50/50 – good concert for cheap and the rest to RFC?
1) Magazines! – give me Esquire or Fast Company any day over a cab ride (or do you mean Cabernet Savignon? Ha!
2) Eating Dinner Out – with friends. On a patio somewhere. The food is nearly irrelevant. Great conversation.
3) Road Trips – but I use recreational sports to stay somewhat fit. This might have been the hardest one for me. I wouldn’t want to road trip if I’m WAY out of shape.
4) Netflix or Good Wine? – Ugh. What do I do? I like these two together. Netflix.
5) Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? – Retirement fund, but if I could have a retirement full of concerts, Joe would be a happy boy.
1. Magazines
2. Eating Dinner Out – Definately
3. Road Trips –
4. Netflix or Good Wine? Can I have both??
5. Retirement Fund Contributions – Yeah i’m boring :)
1. Magazines or Cabs? – I don’t like magazines, and I’d rather not need a cab! If I were in a strange city, I’d love cabs. It would be rare to find a magazine with something useful in it. Toss up ;)
2. iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? – Easy. Dinner out.
3. Road Trips or Recreational Sports? – Road trips.
4. Netflix or Good Wine? – Don’t like either one of these either, but I keep trying to like wine, so I’ll take the wine :)
5. Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? – Retirement fund contributions to my designated avenue of saving them.
Magazines or Cabs? – Cabs.. to tired to walk and mags are everywhere free.
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out? – eat out!
Road Trips or Recreational Sports? – Road Trips a great break from the tedium
Netflix or Good Wine? – do I have to pick? waaaaaa – Good wine then.
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions? – Retirement.
1. Magazines but I don’t spend money on either one…can I have dinner out again?
2. Eating Dinner Out?
3. Road Trips, totally road trips. I love the memories!
4. Netflix and CHEAP wine…great combo. :-)
5. Retirement Fund Contributions. I don’t like live concerts since I am short and can never see anything. :-)
Magazines or Cabs?
Not really into either, I have to say. I’d guess I’d go with cabs, because if I’m taking a cab, I’m probably somewhere exciting.
iTunes or Eating Dinner Out?
Eating out. Hands down. I’ve never even used iTunes!
Road Trips or Recreational Sports?
I guess I’d go with recreational sports, although I haven’t played anything in a while.
Netflix or Good Wine?
We have Netflix, but I do enjoy a nice glass of cabernet sauvignon every now and again. I guess I’ll go with the wine.
Concert Tickets or Retirement Fund Contributions?
Retirement fund contributions. I’ve barely been to any concerts, although I was at the Philadelphia part of Live8 a few years ago. That was a blast, and it was free!
My answers are almost the same as yours, except I would choose Netflix. Thanks for the fun little quiz. It made me think a bit about my priorities.
1. Magazines. Unless I lived in NYC/San Fran/Chicago/Boston. Then I’d opt for cabs, because I hate public transportation (except in DC).
2. Dinner out. FOR SURE. I literally never spend any money on iTunes as it is.
3. Road Trips. Every time.
4. Netflix. Don’t know/care enough about wine to spend good money on it.
5. 99% of the time – Retirement contributions. With an occasional concert – like once a year.
Loving it that so many of you are playing along! Was a nice break from reality for a bit ;)
@eemusings – I love it that you’re a Kiwi. Saver. :)
@melissa – I love DC United games too!! We used to go all the time a few years back but since stopped… great way to spend an afternoon or evening though :)
@Stephanie – Hah! Congrats on that baby in your belly! :)
@Trinnie – I’d be lying if I said I’ve never thought about making a mag one day ;) Just a wee bit harder than blogging, haha… I used to be hooked on Fast Company too, but haven’t read it in a while.
@Emmy – I hope your housing solution ended up well! That’s an important part of living! :)
@Budget & the Beach – “I can drink cheap wine while watching netflix” – haha… AGREED.
@Mrs. Money Mustache – Not a bad combo at all :) And also? SO GREAT MEETING YOU LAST WEEK!! Your kid is soooooo cute! A little monkey – I love it :) Maybe one day both our boys will be hanging out with each other? That would be awesome… great hanging with your man too, he’s got good taste in music.
@Joe @ Retire By 40 – Are you saying we’re both old now? ;)
@Ally – Seeing all the States would be killer – you should totally go for it!
@LB – Huh. Never really thought about that before… if you have asthma it’s bad to be around marijuana?
@Kelsey – Haha… that’s so true on many level ;) (Drinking while walking)
@Edward Antrobus III – “if Iβm taking a cab, Iβm probably somewhere exciting.” – That’s a good way of thinking of it :)
@Melissa@LittleHouseIntheValley – Good! It was a kinda fluffy post for sure, but I do think it’s important to re-evaluate things every now and then too, and in a fun way :) So I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Cabs
Eating Dinner Out
Road Trips
Netflix
Retirement Fund Contributions
ROFLMAO J! No offense but I think you already have parent brain. Yes it is bad to be around marijuana when you have asthma, it is smoke after all. All smoke= bad for lungs=bad for asthma. I had a hard time when all the wildfires were happening this summer.
Yuck, I can imagine :(
