What up what up!
Been asked a lot about when our next #Overheard installment will be dropping, and while I haven’t stockpiled *too* many convos lately, I suppose we have enough to have some fun today ;)
So please to enjoy: things I’ve overheard at the coffee shop lately!
Courtesy of unsuspecting – but very interesting – people unlucky enough to sit near me, haha…
*******
“Mom – you don’t have to be there every time I make a decision… Just let me put a gold cap on my tooth! It’s cool!”
Haha… The things we spend our money and energy on as a kid!!! Though I can’t really talk – I tried putting earrings in as many holes on my face as I could back then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
“I’m going to punch you in your boob”
Almost spit out my coffee on that one.
“She’s as fake as a $3.00 bill!”
YES!!! Excellent money analogy!!
“I asked for 6 inches, and he gave me 12…”
Here’s a perfect example of when context is key, haha… After my adolescent chuckle I realized they were talking about *hair cuts* ;)
“She looks skinny but is not…”
Here’s another one – they were talking about their cat!! Lol…
“I won a Nintendo Switch for only $9.00!”
Now that’s cool!!! Couldn’t quite hear *how* he pulled this off, but my guess is that he won it in some raffle or something… Either that or he’s a master eBay scout!!
“I never thought birds were cute.”
Say whaaaaaaa?
“English is the language of money.”
True true…. I think? I actually don’t get this all the way, haha… Particularly as it was said directly to an hispanic woman?
(gets off the phone) “That was the tennis team – we’re getting matching skirts!”
*Followed by a bunch of high fives and deep dives into patterns and color schemes*
Friend #1: “I wanted to be a waitress but they wouldn’t let me.”
Friend #2: “Why?
Friend #3: “Because I wasn’t strong enough.”
Does it really take that much strength?? Haha… I’ve seen many a petite women excel at serving!
“He’s not the smartest crayon in the box”… “err…. brightest crayon in the box”
The best when people mess these up ;)
“Where would blacks be without the post office?”
Had to google this one as admittedly I was intrigued, and found this article right away from The Washington Post – What we’ll lose if we lose the post office.
Here’s a snippet:
“The post office has historically helped all kinds of people find jobs, including immigrants, rural migrants and those pursuing higher education. For African Americans in particular, the post office has been a job magnet and a vehicle for social activism and community development. Since changes in the law allowed them to enter the ranks in 1865, African Americans fought segregation and discrimination in the Postal Service and its unions, and they played a key role in modernizing the agency. Historically, the post office has been the largest employer of African Americans, and from 1970 to 2000, blacks were at least twice as likely to work for the post office as whites.”
I had noooooo idea about any of this, did you??!
For once my eavesdropping has taught me something!! Haha…
Here’s some more articles around this as well that I spent the next 20 minutes devouring:
- African-American Postal Workers in the 20th Century via USPS
- U.S. Post Office Job Cuts Threaten Black Middle Class via Huffington Post

And then here are some other #overheard stories from readers of the blog who have passed them over…
“I was in a restaurant with my daughter once and a couple nearby was talking about a friend of theirs. The gentleman said: “She has a big ass….. retirement account” Such an unfortunate pause. My daughter and I still laugh about that one.” – Mary
“I was in a grocery store and these two women were talking to each other…. W1- “Hey! What are you doing here? I thought you were picking Jason up off the bus?” W2 – “No, my ex said he would do it. He’s supposed to be getting out of jail this afternoon” – Log cabin Ruth
“I am at a conference this week and I overheard something interesting yesterday while drinking my coffee in the lobby. A lady was asking the hotel manager if the hotel is haunted and he was pretty adamant it wasn’t. Her response, “I find that hard to believe because I was talking to two spirits in the lobby yesterday that used to be grounds keepers on this property.” Freaky!” – Max Out of Pocket

Always something to be overheard out there! ;)
Keep those ears perked up, friends! Just not when you’re around me…

I was in a cafe once and eavesdropping on a blind date next to me. The girl was telling her date about this economic theory she had heard on a Ted talk or something (name of which I can’t remember) that when you start off buying expensive/luxury things, such as a Starbucks coffee for £3 rather than making an instant coffee in the office for free, you are not just spending that £3 you are also setting up your habits for it to be the norm to then spend £3 *every day* on a Starbucks coffee. Same as getting a £10 Uber home after a crappy day at work or a £30 manicure when you can’t be bothered doing your own. It’s not the one off cost that is the problem, but turning this into part of your regular spending. She was really interesting but all her date had to say was, “Ew! I hate Starbucks coffee. I only get mine at independant cafes.” Totally dismissing her and also missing the point. I suspect there was no second date.
PS: What’s the name of the concept?! What is the Ted talk?!
Ahhhhh I’d have proposed to her right on the spot!!!! lol…
Very very true though – hadn’t thought about it in that way before. Smart woman!
(It’s kind of a form of “lifestyle inflation” yeah? Or maybe accidental lifestyle inflation?! Haha…)
Yeah, at one point I had 8 piercings “face, ears, tongue”. but you know, jobs and all…
Tongue!!
Was always curious about that one but never able to pull the trigger…
Though I did appreciate it on ladies :)
Nothing from Fincon?
These are always great. I need a little light reading in the morning.
What happens at FinCon stays at FinCon ;)
If I had to guess, I would say the $9 Nintendo Switch was probably from DealDash…which would mean the winner paid a lot more than $9, if you include all the bids that have to be purchased to have a chance to win anything on that site.
Also a possibility!!
Haven’t dared try any of those myself as they just look like they can suck you in before you know what you’ve gotten yourself into, haha… I’d be a goner there.
I would say the Postal system was fortunate to be able to hire a large percentage of black employees. As the WaPo article stated these employees advanced how the system was managed. I don’t know too many people, of any race, that turn down postal jobs.
That actually reminds me of my old mailman friend who I surmised would be a millionaire by the end of his (32) years of service:
https://budgetsaresexy.com/the-millionaire-mailman/
According to him there are/were some great perks there!
Roomie from college is married to a Postman, she works in investments and mergers. Everything is through the Post Office, mortgage, insurances etc.
Woahhh really?? So they have their own financial institutions for everyone there??
This was a while back, but…
Kid- “I won.”
Dad- “No, that’s not how this works.”
Kid- “Daaaaaad, I won. Don’t you see these points.”
Dad- “Please don’t try to explain the rules of Pokemon to me. I was incredibly uncool in high school, and I know all the rules. I clearly won.”
Hahaha….
Now that is good.
If you were listening to my call the other day.
Rule – we can’t interrupt the customer or talk over them.
Rule – we can’t ask the customer to stop interrupting us. We just have to start over.
Me asking a question:
Are [interrupted by the customer]
Are you [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front[ interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front of [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front of the [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front of the de [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front of the devi [interrupted by the customer]
Are you in front of the device?
Answer:I bought it in November.
This stop and go method of communication is pretty silly but sometimes we are unable to fully form words and just emit weird sounds like when dolphins try to communicate with us.
You’re making me miss the days of customer service now!!! Haha…
Used to LOVE talking to the crazies out there and not knowing what you’re going to get on any given call :) Had to on many occasions whip out the ol’ “Alright, why don’t you get it all out of your system, and then let me know when you’d like me to jump in and help you and we’ll get right to it” line haha… This worked wonders for those who were extremely upset and just needed to yell for a bit until they were *actually* ready to be helped :) On some occasions they even laughed and thanked me for the vent session! #WIN!
Maybe the English reference is about the US dollar being the world reserve currency?
Sounds good enough to me :)
