10 (Amazing) Free Things In Life

I hit up McDonald’s the other day and got something completely free from them. It was pretty incredible, actually. I couldn’t believe they were offering them, but it was 100% legit. And you wanna know the best part? YOU can get one too the next time you’re there!

This free item? A smile.

Yup. McDonald’s gives them away a billion times a day along with their hamburgers ;) At least according to the sign I just read there: “Smiles are free” Haha… And you better believe I asked for one too when the drive-thru lady wasn’t having it!

Okay, super cheesy, but still super true. And a much longer than necessary way for me to lead into today’s topic which is this: There’s a lot of FREE stuff in this world, so don’t always rush to go out and buy everything. Take up some of these free activities I’m about to list off, and then put that worn out pocketbook of yours to rest for a bit (does anyone call them “pocketbooks” any more?). Sit back, grab a coffee, and get ready to have your mind blown.

10 Free Things to Be Appreciative of In Life:

  1. Walks (thanks, God (for making our legs))
  2. Hanging out with family (thanks, mom & dad!)
  3. Books (thanks, library)
  4. Blogs (you’re welcome)
  5. Free samples (thanks, Costco)
  6. Music (thanks, radio/Spotify)
  7. People watching (thanks, weirdos)
  8. Speech (thanks, 1st Amendment!)
  9. Sex* (thanks, wife ;))
  10. Research (thanks, Google)

Ta-da! See, lots of free stuff out there. Now you can never say you didn’t learn anything from this wonderful little blog here ;) Feel free to alert the press and send this out to all your thousands of “friends” on Facebook and Twitter (also, free). I’ll be back tomorrow to amaze you all over again.

If you pay for #9, you might get some other free things that you don’t want along with it. Best not to pay for this one.

According to the statistics, you can get it for free and still get free surprises later. On that note, there are also many ways to get free condoms!!!

Awesome list! I love #7. My grandparents always said that if they were ever bored they could just go sit at the airport and people watch and be entertained for hours.

  11. Debt Blag August 13, 2013 at 9:51 AM

I’m finding that a lot of these can be paid for… and not just the ones you think :)

Skype. I know I have to pay for electricity and the internet but I am paying that anyway.
With both sons at university in other cities it is an easy way to stay in touch.

A tree in my neighbour’s yard has just started to change. Now and for the next 2 months my view will be a changing canvas of colour.

Breadsticks and Salad at the OG!

  14. a terrible husband... August 13, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Nice! I score a ton of free books straight from Amazon’s best seller lists, too.

  15. The Warrior August 13, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Along with recognizing the free things in life, I try to thank everyone for everything. That passes along good stewardship that may be repaid to someone else. It could be as simple as something like opening a door for me and I always thank them. It’s some I can give free in return that pays huge dividends in society as corny as that may sound.

      I concur! Pay it forward…

      1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Indeed! Goes along with smiling at strangers when you walk by too – something that seems to be decreasing in this day in age :(

  16. Joel @ SaveOutsidetheBox August 13, 2013 at 11:09 AM

I love it! The free things truly are the best things. We tend to forget that. Thanks for the reminder J!

  17. Mrs. Budgetsaresexy August 13, 2013 at 11:54 AM

I only made it to #9 out of 10?!

      1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:08 AM

        Pipe down you two ;)

  18. Nick @ ayoungpro.com August 13, 2013 at 12:34 PM

Lol, J. Love your caveat to number 9.

  19. Broke Millennial August 13, 2013 at 12:42 PM

Went to the Erie County Fair over the weekend while visiting some friends. Provided lots of opportunity for #7.

  20. Stefanie August 13, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Nature might be my favorite. Ocean, beaches, mountains- they’re just there all the time for us to enjoy. How amazing is that?!

    1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:10 AM

      (VERY)

  21. Done by Forty August 13, 2013 at 2:00 PM

This list made me laugh! It blows my mind that public libraries actually exist, and that people still buy books anyway. I’ll never get that.

    1. SavvyFinancialLatina August 13, 2013 at 7:09 PM

I love public libraries. I never buy books. See it as a waste of money. Plus, a single book in a public library can service hundreds of people over a book’s lifetime. Sustainability.

      1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:11 AM

The downside is that a) the never have all the books you’re looking for, and b) you can only get them during certain hours. Making Amazon king in the majority of people’s eyes ;)

  22. Christine @ ThePursuitofGreen August 13, 2013 at 8:26 PM

Fun list! There are plenty of free things in life:P Some of the best things in life are free they say!

  23. Peter August 13, 2013 at 9:35 PM

Very entertaining list… Living in America may not be free, but its sure feels free to live here.

  24. Tiffany R August 13, 2013 at 10:05 PM

The cashier at Whole Foods was wearing a button that read “Free Hugs” so I asked for one. She laughed and came over and gave me a big hug. She said that I would be suprised how many people ask for their hug. It made my day!

    1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Awesome!!! Maybe you should try wearing a button that said, “give me a dollar?” :)

      1. Tiffany R August 15, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Going to make one of those now…

  25. Liquid August 14, 2013 at 12:51 AM

Great list. This is why it’s not necessary to spend money on entertainment. There’s so many free options :) I’m thankful for free video games. Many titles on Steam now are free to play.

  26. EJ August 14, 2013 at 9:46 AM

I like this list and everyone else’s suggestions! I think I’ll have to do my own Aussie version :)
just a question and a bit off track, but how do I insert links in wordpress? Thanks for the “free” advice in advance!

    1. J. Money August 14, 2013 at 11:13 AM

Haha… just tweeted you back. But basically highlight the word(s) in the blog post you want linked, then click the button at the top of the composer area which looks like a chain link. That’ll open up a place to add the url you want linked to the word and get the job done. A lot easier to explain in this comment than 140 characters, haha… good luck!

    Podcasts (thank you Kevin Smith)

For a good laugh, you need to download some Hollywood Babble-On. Ear orgasms for all.

People watching – Big yes! Especially at the airport. In fact, I’ll be doing plenty of people watching tonight during my trip back home.

    1. J. Money August 15, 2013 at 2:52 PM

making a note to check out – thx :)

  28. KJJ August 14, 2013 at 10:22 PM

#9 isn’t free. Being married, you’ve legally contracted it.

Married men get super mad at me when I ask why they expect it from me for free when they’ve payed someone else so much for it.
