Hi guys! We got a pretty fun giveaway to do today :) I’m not sure if you’ve heard of these books before, but I’ve read through two of them so far (the credit card one and one on the credit crisis) and absolutely loved them!
They’re super fast to read (like 1-2 hours), lots of stick pictures and examples, and everything’s in plain NORMAL terms like all financial things should be. I’m a big fan, esp if you’re looking to get the foundation down. (If you’re an expert or don’t like books with pictures, these won’t be for you). Here’s more from their website:
The Skinny on Real World Survival Kit
Compiled with young adults in mind, this $40 collection of three books is filled with guidance, tips and, of course, motivation to help you achieve your potential:
#1) The Skinny on Credit Cards helps you manage what can be one of the most beneficial financial tools. You’ll close the book knowing what the fine print actually means and how to avoid (or get out of) credit card debt.
#2) The Skinny on Success directs you to recognize and reflect on your true potential. It is this actionable thought that can maximize your likelihood of success. Too often people underestimate their capabilities, and this book hopes to inspire you to reach a bit higher.
#3) The Skinny on Time Management teaches you the 50 principles you need in order to manage your precious time most effectively. Period.
Want ’em? Tell us who you’d give these to (maybe yourself?) and which one you’d probably like the best. We’ve got TWO kits to give away so be sure to enter! I’ll announce the winners this Sunday night (Aug. 22nd) by using our friend Mr. Random.org ;) Good luck everyone!
(And if you don’t win, you can always pick up either of these at Amazon!)

I would read them FIRST lol….Then I am an elementary school Principal with grades 7 &8 in my building, I would give them to my middle years math teacher to incorporate with our financial literacy portion of the curriculum…she could break it down for them + you wouldn’t believe how many kids have their credit ruined by adults who use their names/ SSN/ etc. to open lines of credit/ utlities/ etc.
I’d want my sister to have them. She’s just starting up her own business, and starting to focus on getting her financial life in order, and I think she’d really benefit from them.. maybe I’d borrow them from her too :)
I would LOVE to read these books! We just got on the Dave Ramsey plan this year and I’m always looking to learn more about finances. Of course, then I’d pass them on to friends or family!
I think that I would definitely read one first, the one that caught my eye was the one on time management – I could for sure use that. After I was finished, I’d probably shoot them to my friends that are interested in starting their own businesses.
I would love them! I graduated college last year, and I am finally starting my first career job next week. I came out of college with some credit card (and student loan) debt, and I’m trying to turn all of that around now, so I’m very interested in the credit card one!
I would give these to my sister-in-law – who is in the process of starting a new career and trying to get a better handle on her finances. I think she could really benefit from them!
I’d read them all, especially the Time Management, which I need desperately, and the Success one. I’ve been told the only thing between me and Stupid-Excess is me, and I’m kind of prone to agree. And then I’d share them, because sharing is good.
So pick me! I’m nice.
Good morning, Freud.
Stupid-SUCCESS, not excess.
Anyone have some coffee?
Free stuff! YAY!!!
My fiance. Between the kids and working from home I’m sure the time management one would come in the handiest.
I would read them first. Then I would pass along to my nephew who starts college next week. The Skinny on Success is the one I am looking forward to reading.
I’d read them first then give them to my 15 yr old daughter to use in her personal finance homeschool class this fall. This size is great and much less intimidating to someone new to the subject.
Time management for me, credit cards for the wife :)
I NEED these books! I would read them first, but the reason I NEED them is for my roommates! We are all 28 and in different stages of financial recovery. One of my roommates and I would read them just to get reinforced on good behavior and for some new ideas, but my other roommates is in FINANCIAL CRISIS! I mean, 28 and doesn’t know how a checking account works! Answers questions like “can you afford it?” with the words “I think so.” (EEK! that means NO!)
I need these book myself. I think The skinny on success will be most beneficial for me.
I think I would like the time management one especially, and the success one secondly.
Two people I would give it to:
1. I would clip the time management one to the outside of my cubicle wall so that my coworkers can read it before they bother me.
2. I would give the success one to my younger brother, as he’ll be graduating this year and looking for a job in the “real” world.
~Dan
I would definitely need the book on time management to read first. And then read it again!
The book on Success I would give to my children and give the book about credit card to a family member who has a ton of credit card debt.
Thanks! ~ Doug Renz
I would looooove to read these and share them with my fiance!! Thank you for this opportunity!
Definitely would keep/read Success and Time Management. Credit cards are not a problem, so that would probably be gifted to one of the many family members who could use it. Now that would be the hardest choice…
totally need the time management one. i’m suppose to save all my readings for later in the day..and what am i doing? reading all these posts in the morning. haha.
Would love to read them then share them with relatives. I’ve got a young cousin who has expressed interest in personal finance and investing, and I think these books would be perfect for him.
I would give these to my husband of 4 months – with the requirement that we read them together!
I’d like to give myself the Skinny on Success and Time Management. I know that my fiance needs help with the Credit Cards, he is just not as aware of the challenges of Credit cards.
I would read them first, I need the time management one, my 20 year old son needs the credit card one. I hope, hope, hope I win!
I’d read them with my wife and pass them along to my kids. After that I’d share with my family and co-workers.
Yep, right here please! Finishing school, full-time job, two kids under 3yrs. lots-a-debt!
I’d read them, take good notes and leave them in the student center where they’ll be ravaged by other workaholic overachiever-yet-underachieving students just like me. Can’t beat a free ticket to personal success, let alone 3 tickets???!
Good luck, all:)
Oh yeah, did I mention I’d plug the blog. Of course, gotta do that!
“Courtesy of Budgets are $exy”
I’d give the one on credit cards to my youngest brother, who is a sophomore in college and could hopefully learn to avoid credit cards early in the game!
The success one would go to my other younger brother, who will be hitting the job market this year as he finishes up grad school.
And I’d definitely keep the time management one for myself! You can never get too good at managing your time, which really is invaluable.
I’d give the books to my little sister. She’s entering her senior year of high school, which in my opinion, is the best time to read all of those books. She’d need time management to know how to prepare for college, success to learn how to be successful in life, and credit cards because that’s when most college students get in trouble with debt. She’d be well ahead of the game after reading the books, even though she still has her big sister to help her out :)
I think I’d like to read through these books first, then give them to my boyfriend. Since we’re both grad students, all three are directly relevant to our lives. He has a bit of credit card debt he is looking to get rid of, so maybe that book would be best for him. I think I’d like the success book the best, because I am struggling with teaching recently and need a new outlook. :)
I probably read all these books first and then give the credit card one to my wife, maybe she will spend less? ;)
Building credit isn’t easy but the more tools and understanding you have the better.
oooh i would love to have those. i would probably read them all first :) i need time management help like nobody’s business. the other two i would probably give to my sister. she doesn’t have a ton of debt (thanks to the bank o’ mom), but she also doesn’t have the best money management skills (also thanks to the bank o’ mom)
I would keep these puppies for myself. I could really use the one on time management. Between being a full time student and working 50 hours a week there’s not much time to spare.
I would keep the Credit Card & Success books to read & then share them with my cousin, I’m sure she would love them. I would give the Time Management one to my boyfriend (and steal it from him when he’s done so I can read it too!)
I would keep the Credit Card book because I don’t know the ends and outs of the fine print, and give the other two books. away. I believe in helping others, so I would give the Success book to my sister. She hasn’t figured out yet what she needs to do to become successful. My fitness partner, Heather, needs help with time management. That book would go directly to her.
I would definately keep it for myself if I won. I am definately am intrested in the time management one. Time management seems to be an ever ending goal of mine, especially when school starts. I’m also intrested in the successful one, because, hey, who doesnt want to be? :)
I’d give one to my parents, because it’s becoming increasingly evident they need some financial know-how…and one to my girlfriend, because SHE LOVES TO SHOP!!!!!
I’d also borrow it from the GF before I give it to her lol
I’d keep the Time Management ones for myself, give the Success one to my younger brother (recent college grad) and pass along the Credit Card one to my best friend. She’s been asking me for advice about credit cards since she ran into trouble accepting every store card that would give her a small discount a while back.
I definitely need the time management book… I’m avoiding work I don’t want to do by checking my financial blogs (don’t tell anyone). The credit card book is probably written just for my little ‘sis. And somehow I need to find a subtle, non-offensive way to give the success book to my slacker friend.
I want ’em so bad!
Haha…oh man, good GOOD answers! I really hope some of your significant others aren’t reading this right now ;) I feel some of you on the Time Management stuff too – I am in DIRE need of workin’ that out. DIRE I say!
@Jeannine – That would be so wonderful! I hope your # comes up because these books are SO PERFECT for kids to learn and actually have fun with. They really really do a great job of breaking it all down and making it easy to follow along. You should totally get them (or rent from library?) either way to give ’em a shot.
@Dan – I would LOVE to see that! If I had a cubicle I’d post things up for my co-workers to peep too.
@nathan – If this weren’t a random.org choosing I’d have totally awarded you one of these packages already :) freakin’ crack me up!
@Kyle – haha, you too man. i used to read pf blogs for a good 2-3 hours a day @ work – but now can barely keep up with my own. really gotta work on that ;)
@michelle – I miss the bank of mom and dad sometimes :) only sometimes though – feels pretty satisfying doing it all on your own.
I’d keep a set for myself and set the other one free among my friends. I would write a note on the front cover of each book and ask that my friends pass it along once they’ve finished it.
I’d read them first but then I would definitely make darling hubby read them too cover to cover! His dad was not so great at dealing with his finances (savings? what savings?!) and unfortunately, he passed along that trait to his son!
I would read them first (an emerging adult transitioning into young adulthood) and then pass them on to my brother (a college guy in his last year of school) in hopes that he’d pass them on to a freshman in his dorm.
Seems like it would be good info for all three stages.
I think I’d like the time management book best, it sounds like it scratches where I itch.
I would give one of these sexy books to my younger cousin, who is still in high school. I’d keep the credit card book for my own pleasure (corny, I know).
I’d read the credit card book, since I will be a future college graduate in about 2 years, and this book will help me determine how to select and manage a credit card. I’ve avoided getting one so far, so this book would be a great help.
I’d give the time management and success books to my cousin since they are essential skills that she should master while in high school. Being her mentor, I give her advice and material to enhance her education and passion for what she wants to do anyway; having these books will be simple and yet powerful tools that she can read and apply to her life.
Thanks for the giveaway, J! I would give these books to my husband’s siblings. there are 4 of them and they all have credit card debt, student loans, etc. the money comes in, and before they know it, it’s gone and the end of the month is far away. they need help. we have tried talking to them, but they don’t listen. i am hopeful these books might do the trick.
I would definately read all of them and then pass them along. The one I would start with would probably be the one on credit cards.
Thanks!
I would keep the Time Management for myself (juggling 2 kids and 2 jobs). Give the Credit Card to my ex-husband (enough said). The Success one to my cousin who is about to graduate college.
I’d keep them for myself, and I most need the Time Management one since I’m a terrible procrastinator who will always start “tomorrow”. I get so mad at myself for wasting time! So, yes, I need these!
I’d like to check out “The Skinny on Credit Cards”. As a program manager for a statewide financial education initiative, I am constantly seeking tools that can help our educators better inform class participants. Since we’re a nonprofit agency, we can’t buy a ton of these books. But at least we can recommend them (and pass a free one around our educator network :>).
i’d have to check ’em out first then pass ’em onto my bro. might help him get some common sense!
These books sound great! Even better for my short attention span coupled with my constant desire for knowledge about my interests, finances always being one of them. I don’t know if I can choose between the three! They would all be useful, but I could use the inspiration form the Skinny on Success for sure. I would definitely let my sister read these. We are always talking about finances, sharing our dreams and our techniques on budgeting. It’s good to have a ‘partner in credit’ to keep you on point!
Agreed :) You remind me a lot of my sister actually – she’s always passing around inspiration and getting us brothers involved!
I’d give them to my husband since he’s about to start an exciting new job after a period of unemployment..and I’d read them myself!
I’d give it to my son, as he’s going off to university; these would really help him!
I would keep them for myself and share them with my fiancee as we are both in that young adult age ish (I’m still a teenager – but only until Saturday!). And I’d probably like the skinny on time management the best.
You’re still a teen? Wow – I’d have never guessed! You’re so mature :)
I would like the one on success. I want to learn how to better allign myself to be more sucessful in my choices I make in life.
Haha…love your name there bro. Reference to Natty Ice by chance? ;)
Worth a read. I’ll probably give it a peek before passing it along to a cousin who will be a senior in college.,,to prepare her for the “real world of finance!
Oh wow. I totally forgot to pick the 2 winners this week!!! I’m such a turd. But here they are! The two lucky winners who will be getting their very own “Skinny On” Life packages! :)
Congrats to Heather and Nate! Look for an email soon…and for everyone else, look for another giveaway next week!
Heather and Nate Your books went out today! Congrats and thanks to everyone for participating!! :)
