Never Have I Ever… Played This Game With Finances!

Remember that drinking game where every time you can’t answer “true” to the questions you have to take a shot?

And every time you look around you realize your friends are just as crazy as you are?

We’re gonna play this game today, only instead of alcohol we’re swapping in coffee (and instead of random sexual questions, we’re sticking to financial ones ;))

Close your door, make sure no one’s looking, and get that cup of hot Joe ready, baby!

Every time you can answer “Truth”, take a sip:

  • Never have I ever…. gone into debt
  • Never have I ever…. bought something without telling my spouse
  • Never have I ever…. fudged the numbers of my budget to feel better
  • Never have I ever…. bought something and then never returned it
  • Never have I ever…. been jealous of my co-workers/neighbors
  • Never have I ever…. made a horrible investment decision
  • Never have I ever…. gone shopping while drunk
  • Never have I ever…. brought my own snacks to the movies
  • Never have I ever…. done something I wasn’t proud of for money
  • Never have I ever…. not opened a bill because I was too afraid to see what was inside it
  • Never have I ever…. lost my wallet
  • Never have I ever…. lied on my resume
  • Never have I ever…. secretly hid money
  • Never have I ever…. blew my paycheck before I even got it
  • Never have I ever…. skipped a lunch/dinner to save money
  • Never have I ever…. not appreciated what I already have
  • Never have I ever…. cheated on this blog and read another’s (DON’T YOU DRINK!!!)

You can’t see it, but almost every single one of you are now done with your coffee :)

(Myself very much included)

Moral of the story: NONE OF US ARE PERFECT! Laugh it off and keep going!

As long as you’re being more awesome than not, you’re good in my books.

Drunk shopping. HAVE YOU SEEN MY CLOSET? Oops.

“Never have I ever…. done something I wasn’t proud of for money.” <– This one is definitely worth thinking about.

    Happy Monday!

I think you need to wear every single one on top of each other a la Chandler Bing this week :)

    β€’Never have I ever…. secretly hid money

I have some hidden money around my house. Nothing like my grandpa. He took some PVC tubes, filled them with gold (not kidding) and buried them in his crawl space. The good news is, he told my dad how many and where they were before he passed. Otherwise, it would have been quite the treasure hunt.

Your grandpa is my new favorite person.

Guilty as charged! I almost finished my hot chocolate (I don’t drink coffee). Like you pointed out, we all make mistakes. No human is infallible. Sometimes, we need reminders like this to instill a little dose of humility in our lives

I hope it works for people this morning :) We aren’t that great at cutting ourselves slack!

Never have I ever…. lied on my resume
The only one that’s true for me. :D
We just have to learn from our mistakes and try to avoid making them again. That’s life.

Hah! That’s one of the only ones that were false for me :)

I answered “True” to about 13 of the others, womp womp..

    8! I am a boring person.

Note: What’s considered a HORRIBLE investment decision? I’m going to define that as losing all the money, maybe more than the original investment if you pour good money after bad. Does it count if your parent stole a ton of money from you and invested it horribly? I feel like that doesn’t because I didn’t choose the investment but it does because I trusted that parent not to steal from me. Hmmm, I’m counting that as a half truth. I’ve hidden money from myself so that’s another half truth!

My grandmother, however, buried a bunch of cash in my aunt’s garden and NEVER TOLD ANYONE WHERE. I’m tempted to go dig up that yard except it’s not my aunt’s anymore and could lead to an arrest. Maybe better to leave things where they are ….

    1. J. Money October 1, 2018 at 2:27 PM

Woahhhh so it hasn’t been found yet?? At least that you know of??

I bet they’d let you dig there if you agree to split it with them 50/50 ;) That’s pretty wild..

(and why did you parents steal money from you?? So sad!!!)

      1. Revanche @ A Gai Shan Life October 2, 2018 at 8:32 PM

Not that I know of!! I’m about ready to head over there with a spade and some work gloves ;D

The exact why may never be truly known but I wrote about what I knew about the theft and surrounding circumstances, of course!: agaishanlife.com/2017/11/how-and-why-im-cutting-off-my-father/

Ahhh yeah, I remember that post. So so sad :(

  6. Patrice @ Financial Peacock October 1, 2018 at 12:48 PM

    I’ve done 11 of these.

I don’t hide money because I think I will forget where it is!!! I had a friend though that started keeping a little extra cash each week when she was planning to leave her husband and had her parents hold onto it. Her husband made all the money and she stayed home with the kids so she was nervous that he could somehow cut her off after she left.

CVS sells the same boxes of candy for only $1!!! So I totally bring my own candy to the movies instead of paying $4. I still buy something there though because I love getting a coke icee (for $6!!!). For some reason when I go to the movies I seem to think an endless amount of sugar is ok. lol

    1. J. Money October 1, 2018 at 2:28 PM

Yeah, the “smalls” there are EXTRA LARGE in other stores too, crazy…

    2. Ben October 9, 2018 at 2:18 PM

What about bringing your own beer to the movies? Most of the theaters around me have started selling beer, so it’s the same, right? A can of beer doesn’t take up much more space than an assorted snack, and is certainly more fun.

Come to find out, when they hear *pop fzzzz*, most folk aren’t put out.

  7. Zach October 1, 2018 at 12:59 PM

J$ – what a fun spin on that game.

I answered “true” 9 times. That number drops to 7 if you make me count when I was in High School and skipped lunch and hid my money in an envelope in my underwear drawer. I wrote “Stay Out” on the envelope because that would totally keep my mom from looking inside when she put away my laundry… Of course she looked and her worst fears were alleviated when she saw the small bills.

She confessed to me later, we had a good laugh. I should have done my own laundry.

    1. J. Money October 1, 2018 at 2:29 PM

      Haha… we’re pretty funny when we’re young :)

  8. Debbie October 1, 2018 at 2:23 PM

Never have I ever brought my own snacks to the movies…..the new modern movie theatre at our old house charged $15 to see a movie. No way was I paying $10 for popcorn, $5 for a drink or $5 for candy. I always took bottled water & a snack from home in my purse! Since moving the nearest theatre is an hour away so we never go. I’m also guilty of not opening a bill…but only when it arrived on a Friday…I didn’t want it to spoil my weekend!

    1. J. Money October 1, 2018 at 2:30 PM

Exactly why I don’t check emails or anything on the weekend too – never know what you’re gonna find in there that can mess up your weekend ;) Figured if there’s an emergency people would just call, right?

I finally got some sense in my old age. Sadly not worth much now. My last child left home. Treated myself to spontaneous movie two months ago. Ticket, drink and popcorn ran 36.00. Redbird for me from now on. Just wasn’t worth it.

    1. J. Money October 2, 2018 at 5:49 AM

I dread the day my kids leave home :( I hope yours visits often!!

  10. Paul October 2, 2018 at 8:29 AM

I may need to brew a second pot…On the plus side, I’ve already taken out the recycling, mowed the yard, done all of my work for the day, and refinished my bathroom, just in the span of a few minutes. Even as I type this there is just a hue of my fingers (I am terrible at typing, yes I know my IT street cred just fell, but honestly, I’ve always been good enough)…

    1. J. Money October 2, 2018 at 9:59 AM

I can always count on you for making this stuff even more fun, haha… I think you’d make for a great blogger if you ever want to change careers ;)

      1. Paul October 3, 2018 at 8:42 AM

Appreciate it. I’ve thought about it in the past, but can never get beyond the point of figuring out my niche. IDK, maybe that stuff just develops over time and its more important to just do something. I would like to have more than one stream of income, IT consulting is a very high risk of downtime field… I’ve had a good 10 years I think I’ve only sat at home for a week during that span and that was just waiting for a contract to start but whose to say that my luck wont run out at some point.

        1. J. Money October 3, 2018 at 9:45 AM

Or maybe you’re just REALLY good at what you do and everyone wants your skills put to work? :) “Just doing” is a great strategy for new projects – never know where they’ll lead you or if you’ll enjoy it, etc.. I didn’t know blogging would go on to completely change my life and finances – every side idea prior to it lasted maybe 3 months tops! So if it’s something you think you’d like (*and* you have the time, of course), I’d go for it. But not to make money as that’s just a nice side effect if you happen to get lucky with it. You really have to enjoy blogging for it to pay off like that – it’s a grind.

I don’t drink coffee but my cup of tea was empty half way through. At 67, I have had lots of time to do every stupid thing on the list. Not that they are all stupid since ‘debt’ can be good or bad.

    1. J. Money October 4, 2018 at 9:42 AM

I’d imagine so! Thanks for stopping by and checking out the blog – off to go learn more about yours now :)

I never invest in penny stocks….Anymore! I successfully completed a 12 step program to re-program my temporal lobe to not fall for emotional purchases. I was number 1 in my program, so I have to live up to the standard!

    1. J. Money October 4, 2018 at 10:21 AM

      Haha… good job.

  13. Danielle Ogilve October 8, 2018 at 10:54 AM

fudged the numbers of my budget to feel better — this is me :(

    1. Danielle Ogilve October 9, 2018 at 1:42 PM

Need to correct this to “old me” haha
