Yep – I went out and did it. I created that coin collecting blog I’ve been flirting with! I know you’ve been on pins and needles over the past few weeks just waiting, so today’s your lucky day ;) And, by lucky, I mean your choice of “nerdy” or “boring” – depending on what excites you in the morning…

It’s my new place to discuss coins, currency, and, well, any other types of numismatic awesomeness. It’s basically my way to not drive all you non-coin lovers crazy on this blog here, haha… But I’m also secretly hoping to “bring it back” to the young crowd too. I genuinely think it’s an amazing hobby to get into, especially with everything you learn about the history of our great country!, and, really, I’m tired of being the youngest collector around, haha…
Coin collecting is cool, dammit! Why won’t anyone listen?? ;)
So while I am hesitant to yet again dive into another project, I finally just decided to go “all in” and see what the potential is. I’m one of those people who needs to just DO IT, as Nike says, and put things out there into the “real” world. Sometimes this results in utter nonsense and I scrap it months later (remember GiveawaysAreSexy.com?), and other times – like in the case of Budgets Are Sexy – it completely, and utterly, changes my life. The only problem is that you never know *which* project will ever hit big and stick! So for now, we pretend this one will :) I’m on a roll with Rockstar Finance so far!
Also, something we don’t talk a lot about here is what happens once your side hustle turns into your FULL-TIME hustle? Yeah you’ve now replaced your day job with (hopefully) a more fun and potentially better one – which is incredible – but do you fill back up the side gig space? Or do you just focus on the one main project now?
A friend once told me that you always have to have “something sexy” on the side. (Sexy in the sense of something you’re passionate about, not necessarily hot women and/or budgets ;)) And that when most people turn their hustle into a day job, they forget to replace the sexiness in their lives and get overwhelmed. I can definitely relate. I still love Budgets Are Sexy to death, but it’s def. not the same as it was in the beginning. When it was purely for fun and no mouths needed to be fed off it :) So I think my friend has a point. We all need something “sexy” in our lives, whether business-related or not.
Coin Thrill is my new sexy.
I’m treating it solely as a hobby too. Only blogging when my heart desires and not getting all strategy- like up in there. It’s coins and fun – that’s it! And if it takes off, it takes off. Or maybe I get lucky like Dave did and it’ll cover my coin addiction hobby completely? :)

Yeah, I have a pretty ok collection on my own and I inherited a rather amazing collection from my grandfather that I remember going to coin shows with. He was more of a purchase them for their silver/gold content and the fact that they were classic was just a bonus. So I don’t have many rarities/varities, but I do have a lot of really nice classic coins. My favorite thing is the bank bag of Morgan silver dollars all BU and many of them “naturally” toned.
Hot dogs!!! I just had a coin orgasm! Haha…

Do you fill back up the “side hustle” space? Interesting point. I think I would take on more personal projects- perhaps not income producing but possibly more money saving (do it yourself, more cooking, etc)

Again, J$, Happy Birthday! I don’t see coins as such a stretch from budgetsaresexy.com; in fact, for many people they’ve been a wonderful investment. Your love and passion for your subject matter will shine through–and above all how you keep it real. Now that you’ve got me looking at coins, I’ve already discovered new things, e.g. that the laws against defacing coins are much more explicit than those against maiming banknotes. HAH! Funny you should mention that. I literally JUST bought a stamp guide book to look up a collection I picked up the other year :) I think I have some $100+ stamps!! (but of course I have no idea what I’m doing, haha… look for a blog post on it shortly :)).

I’m thrilled about your new coin blog!
I’m following you for a time now, I’m passionate about Financial Independence, early retirement… everything you discuss about here.
But I’m even more a fan of coin collecting!! Actually I hope this hobby will become part of my FI and “early retirement” (I’m always careful when using early retirement when actually “working” in a coin webstore or something because of the Internet Retirement Police ;)).
I’ll probably do your 9 questions post, but in short, I always collected coins when I was younger, with my mother. It was circulation coin, as I didn’t have money to buy some, so any weird or rare coins I found in my pocket change was a thrill for me!
A few years ago, I looked into the NCLT (Non-Circulation Legal Tender), which are numismatics or collector’s coin. The most are made of pure silver or pure gold, and are on any theme you can imagine (some weird ones are even scented, on marijuana theme). But I found many very nice coins through the years, some with precious gem embedded, one of my favorite is a mars coin with a real piece of stone coming from the Mars planet!!
This hobby led to me accumulating many coins in my collection, joining online communities and forum about coins, starting a webstore to sell some I have to finance my new ones, and actually make a decent profit for “early retirement” (sshhhhh this is between you and me because I’ll still have to “work” to find coins, maintain my webstore, etc.)

PS. I’m from Montreal, in Canada so my main interests are Royal Canadian Mint coins, but I look into all mint around the globe.

Hey good for you man! Its always exciting to do projects that relate to what your passionate about.
Quick story, guy I used to work with would order $1k in silver dollars from the bank. He would then go through them looking for ones to collect. Wash, rinse repeat, he would do this all the time. I thought it was kinda crazy but he was finding some valuable coins that way I guess.
Your friend is a PIMP! That’s the best way to get great (and valuable) coins for pretty much free. Minus all the hours you’ve spent searching through them all :) If you’re a collector though, it all falls into the “fun” department.
Kudos to you, J, for taking the plunge!!! My kids love to collect coins, so I’m sure we’ll be hopping over to the new site every now and again. It looks awesome!

My father in law is a coin collector. We valued his collection about 20 years ago and it wasn’t worth much. Maybe we should try again!!! I hope we hit the jackpot ;)
Heck yeah! A lot has changed in 20 years from what I hear :)
My side hustle(s) are finally making more than my day job. And they do it with less hours. The only coins I collect are thrown in a 5-gallon pail, and brought to the bank once a year of so. they all add up to quite a bit, even the pennies I find on the ground.
Congrats on getting those side hustles rollin’ like that! I take it you own some good rental properties? When do you think you’ll cut the cord w/ the 9-5? Or you gonna max out the $$ and just kill it for a while still?!
Sounds awesome! I actually liked collecting coins as a kid. It’s great to see that you are doing something for the fun of it, since I can understand how having a blog might not be as much fun (or as sexy) when it becomes something you have to do.

Love coin collecting, Coin Thrill will definitely go on my “check daily list.” I have always been into numismatics and especially love finding older paper currency (Confederate Notes.) I have also gotten into collecting silver and gold, but it’s not near as fun as an actual US gold coin.
Awesome! Always like meeting a fellow collector. And I’ve actually gotten a few confederate notes as an xmas gift a few years back. The only one I can remember off hand is my $10.00 note from Richmond VA. Might be up for a trade if it interests you :)
I used to collect only paper money too (and actually told my wife I had absolutely NO interest in coins – which she likes to make fun of me now for ;)), but now I do both – with more of a focus on coins. Actually picked up an older $50 bill at an antique show fairly recently that I’ve been meaning to blog about. They used to look so much classier back in the day!
I am looking forward to seeing the coin content you produce! My wife and I collect old money, but ironically, we collect mostly paper money. I have an old $1 silver certificate from the 1930s…stuff like that. Currency is fascinating!

I was just telling Tyler up above there that I started in currency and then somehow ended up more towards a focus in coins – something I swore to my wife I’d never be interested in a few years back, haha… But I’m still very much into paper money too :) You don’t see as many collectors of them than you do coins for some reason?

J Money, I’m big into the confederate currency as well as coins. The bulk of my collection is Confederate Currency, Morgans, and Two Cent Pieces. Let me know if you ever need some insight into the world of confederate stuff.

I started with Morgans and moved onto Silver Eagles (primarily proof and Uncirculated).Now I’m almost an exclusive ASE collector, though other unique coins usually pique my interest.
Fun :) And the nice thing with that route is that it’s all super liquid and can be quite the investment as well, whether you’re a coin collector or not. People are always jumping into silver/gold when the markets crash. I remember when silver was $5.00, and then a few years later $45! And now it’s at what, $18?
I was just thinking about starting a blog for my coin hobby. My YouTube channel started out there. Are you part of BlogLovin? That would make it easy for us to follow all your blogs.
