What up, what up my savvy friends! We got another cool giveaway to throw at ya today — PERFECT for anyone who worries a lot and/or who are just plain ol’ SMART (like me ;) I’ve been rockin’ the safes for 5 years now! W00T.)
But today, unlike the time I shelled out $100.00 for mine, we are giving away one super sleek Sentry Fire File 1170 Safe! Which not only stores files and documents nice and easily for you, but also has enough room to plop in a mess of other valuables too — like wads of cash, jewelry, passports, etc etc. As long as you don’t cram in 100 hanging folders or anything ;)
I thought about setting one on fire just to put it to the test (they sent me one to check out and keep too), but the Mrs. sadly talked me out of it… something about me being immature or something, oh well. Guess you’ll just have to take their word for it ;) Here are the product details from their site:
- Key lock for privacy
- Fire protection for digital media, tested for 1/2 hour up to 1550°F
- Lifetime after-fire replacement guarantee
- Manufacturer’s limited warranty
- Proven UL classified – 1/2-hour fire protection
Want it? Answer this quick question below, and you’ll automatically be entered to win:
If you could only grab ONE thing in the middle of a house fire, what would it be?
We’ll announce the winner (via Random.org) this up and coming Sunday night, Mar 20th, and then get it right out to ya! In the meantime, check out some of the more hilarious types of safes I’ve found over the years – there’s no shortage of cleverness!
PS: I’ll be giving out another Sentry safe in my VIP Newsletter this week… if you’re not a subscriber yet, might be a good time to join!

I scan and upload all my financial related stuff to Carbonite and as everything else is just “stuff” I’d make sure to have my wife in tow…don’t tell her that in this case I refered to her as a thing. :)
My pets. If they count as a freebie, next in line is my hope chest stuffed full of family heirlooms, pictures and geneaology stuff. Given there is time, of course. Dragging a 200 lb. box full of stuff with a fire on your tail probably wouldn’t be at the top of husband’s priority list.
My backpack. Between my laptop, camera, notebooks, and other accessories, it’s the only thing of any value in my house.
Husband, kids, and pet aside, I would grab my purse. I have lived through having a housefire and lost everything so I know how difficult it is to replace the items in my purse!
I would say the item I would grab is my wallet. I think it is safe to say my pets would follow me out of the house since they are on my heels always. Having my wallet I have my id, insurance and other necessities that would allow me to get started in case I lost everything. Makes you think when you start writing about it.
My external harddrive. Backups of everything on my laptop, all my music, all my photos (including scans of tons of old family photos). Pictures of my ID are on there (encrypted of course), so I figure it will make them easier to replace. Plus it’s smaller than my laptop, it fits in my pocket. But I already keep it in a fire-proof safe: my student residence installed them a few years back in all the rooms.
The cats, if I can catch em. If they’re a gimme, then I guess my purse. It’s probably the only thing I could grab and dash with that would be useful anyway (Maybe need to fix that? lol)
My cat first. If she’s coming anyway, my purse…it has the id, debit cards, and cash I’d need to get a temporary place to stay.
My cat obviously. Then I’d have to say one of my husband’s guitars. He loves them so much. I don’t know which one but I’d guarantee he love me forever if I saved his stuff!
My backup hard drive – contains digital photos, music and financial backups.
I’m assuming this is not including family and pets. I would grab my purple binder, my “Home Management Journal”. It’s got everything, including all my family’s personal info, emergency numbers, income tax related stuff, medical numbers and vaccination booklets, you name it. Plus, it’s nondescript, the last thing anyone would think to be important. I’m all set, once I have my binder :)
My purse. At least I’d have money, ID, insurance info, etc. Everything else financial wise could be replaced. Id hate to lose those sentimental things, but overall they aren’t that important.
Hmmm, the one thing I’d grab in a house fire? Other than any other living things in the home with me like the dogs or my boyfriend I’d probably snatch up my file box (which is plastic and heavy, but I can lug it around) It’s got any and all of the important documents I would need to put my life back together if I lost everything else. I’ve actually thought about it before and there honestly isn’t anything else in my house that is worth losing my life over. Even those papers in the file box can be replaced, but it’d take a lot of time and money to do so.
I’ve been looking at fireproof safes recently, but haven’t coughed up the dough. Maybe a good idea considering I live in a bank of about 14 townhomes, and if one goes up there is a good chance it could spread to us all….
Other than pets, I would grab my computer because it has a lot of school work on there that is important to me, not to mention music, pictures, and financial information.
After my cat and wallet I would grab my box of pictures which include some of my parents and grandparents. They are the only irreplaceable things I have in my house. I’d miss other things but could get them back.
My life binder. I have a binder with folders for each important area of my life. My electric bills, hospital bills, phone bills, car insurance policy, pay stubs, life insurance policy. It’s essentially a fire box but in binder form and not fire proof. :( I’ve been asking for a fire box for a few years now for birthdays and xmas but have yet to get one.
Assuming that the living creatures (people, dogs) are out of the house, I’d grab my external hard drive, which has the vast majority of my personal and financial documents archived to it.
I would grab my wedding ring (assuming I didn’t have it on which I don’t at night). If I had it on then I would say my wallet.
I would grab my toothbrush.
My dog, of course – and then my purse. (love these safes, awesome giveaway!)
My Dog. Without Question.
A loaded backpack with my IDs and Laptops inside. ;0)
I would say that my wallet would be pretty sweet to grab, but if it weren’t close enough my laptop to save the family pics.
family. period. everything else can be replaced.
No question – my infant son.
My external hard drive with all my photos on it!
Nice giveaway! Despite what the Bourne movies portray – safes can be useful for your average joe who doesn’t have multiple passports, hundreds of thousands in various currenices, and a loaded 9mm! :)
If I could grab one thing in a fire…..it would be my WIFE!
I’d get my desktop computer. It would be a heavy thing to lug out the door, but it has everything I need. If I were in a rush, I’d just grab my backup drive, but I’m not great about updating that regularly, so I’d still lose a lot of stuff.
You didn’t put the “Pringles safe” on your list…
http://www.amazon.com/Trademark-Global-Pringles-Diversion-Safe/dp/B001C4R72C
Anyway, I’m not too attached to anything, and my external hard drive is in my desk at work. I do have a “nostalgia box” of things I have no use for but can’t part with, so maybe I would get that.
I would grab my dog since I don’t think she’d follow me out the door like she’s supposed to
I would grab my external hard drive. It’s backed up with over 5 years of data, and wouldn’t have a chance otherwise. If I had time, I would next grab my “nostalgia box”/”treasure box”.
Well, after the obvious things that breathe…I’d grab either my purse or my laptop – which ever was closest!
My dog and my passport if I had time. Makes me think I should back up all my pictures and music again soon and put it somewhere NOT in the house!
I was thinking the same as many folks above – my cat would be number one, unless she’s a “freebie”. Then I was thinking my laptop, but people above made me realize that what would be more important would be my purse or whatever bag my wallet happened to be in at the time.
Ooh .. I’ve been wanting a fire safe for a while.
Assuming my pets were safe, my laptop would be what I’d grab. It’s got my life on it. It is backed up, but I really need to get into the habit of keeping a backup drive at work rather than storing all of them at home!
Probably the cat, but if he could get out on his own I’d grab the laptop. I worry the cat would get too scared to move and trap himself in a closet or under the bed.
As others said, husband and pets aside…
I’d grab my purse
My purse, and some insulin! But if I still had pets, they would be number one.
My wife’s laptop just because it has most of the pictures of our kids on it. Everything else is realtively easy to replace.
I’d definitely grab my phone, since it’s the one way to let my loved ones know that I’m safe.
Other than the baby & toddler, my husband and I have a plan that one grabs our very small fireproof safe and the other grabs our external harddrive. Since we’re a family of four, our safe is way, waaaaay too small, but I’ve crammed everything in there anyway. And last year I made copies of the fronts & backs of every card we carry in our wallet and put it in there.
Hey, if I win, I’ll give you my smaller safe to give away!
I’d be heading straight for my dog :) She and I are a package deal, she goes I go and vice versa!
If living creatures are not an option, my purse would be next on the list!
I would definitely grab my purse. My dog would follow me and my husband out so we wouldn’t have to worry about that.
I would grab my dog & cat, but if that’s a given… then I would grab my laptop, or at least the backup hard drive – those images are irreplaceable!
Computer with pics and files.
My emergency bag.
I keep a bag packed with some emergency supplies (flashlights, etc) and copies of all my important documents and financial info. I also have back-up computer disks in there with pictures and files that I might need or want someday.
Aside from my cat – my laptop.
I would grab my journal and passport! Can I grab two things? ;)
Well, I’d like to say I would grab pictures of family members, or maybe an expensive item like a computer, but I think if I was actually placed in that position I’d grab my guitar!
Keep ’em coming!!! W00T.
in the middle of a house fire, I would grab my dog.
But, I can’t keep my dog in my safe.
I would love a safe because I just started a side gig of renting out a room in my house, even though its just a friend — having a safe would be a good investment for my side gig :)
My jewelery box containing our passports and my jewelery :)
After everyone was safe, I’d definitely grab my purse. Interesting thought process though…I think I’ll use that when I’m decluttering this Spring. How far down on the list of things to save would this item be? If it’s not even on the list, out it goes!!
I would grab my wallet
I want to say my worm bin, but that’s just silly. I’d probably take some books and LPs that I got from my grandfather.
I would grab my fiance’s hand…
After I knew that everyone was safe, and our dog was safe, my laptop would definitely be next. I’ve gone pretty much completely digital so that would definitely be the biggest save….
I know this is sentimental, but I would grab the box of letters from my sweetheart. It’s one of the few things in the house that can absolutely never be replaced.
My phone. If I could grab two then i would grab my Mac Book Pro also. I would kiss my plasma and king bed goodbye and pray by garage full of tools doesn’t go up in flames (tear…sniffle). Everything should be safe in my Sentry Fire File 1170 Safe that I am about to win from budgets are sexy. (hint, hint) lol
I will grab my purse that has the cell phone, wallet.
I would grab the shoebox full of photos, which includes the high school photos of my great-grandfather, George, and great-grandmother, Katherine (she played girls sports in high school in the 1930s, and her friends called her Kitty. Her photo reminds me to be brave and bust stereotypes.).
My wedding photobook!
My laptop… My life is saved on it.
If all the people and the dog are safe, I’d grab my purse!
I’ve backed up all my pictures and important docs to Mozy.com — so I know I’d still be able to access all that. And then in that case, I’d grab my camera and purse and get the heck out of there. Whichis not to say that having a safe like this wouldn’t also be good for keeping original copies, etc. safe….
My phone–it would allow me to communicate, find information (I have a data plan), and get my life back together.
As long as my husband & dog were safe I think the next thing I would grab is my purse – as long as I had the items in my wallet then I know that everything else can be replaced.
My Bugout Bag – I put it together for just such an occasion. Mostly survival gear (flashlight, tools, tarp, food, water) but also has a change of clothes, my backup usb hard drive, some cash, an extra ID, and a picture of my family. The entire city could be burning and I feel good to go.
my cell phone and purse.
Assuming the stuff I keep in my pockets are already there, I would grab my little wad of cash I keep on hand for emergencies.
The orange bag in the filing cabinet. It has birth certificates, legal docs, citizenship paperwork, etc. I should put a thumb drive of photos and computer info in there too come to think of it!
Speaking as someone whose house burned down on Christmas eve in the 5th grade, I would say pets and pictures. My cat died in the fire, and we literally have only a few pictures of childhood after the fire. That is something that can never be replaced.
Cats and purse. And then husband :-)
Aside from the obvious family or friends who might be in the house AND aside from my purse, I’d go for my blanket and bear that I’ve had since I was born. Those are the two most sentimental things I own and I’d be sad to lose them even though they’re disintegrating slowly anyway. Too cute, I know. ;)
tough question – i will get my cell phone to coordinate and get in touch with people later on.
Aside from obviously my husband, children and dog, I would grab my purse. Thanks for such a generous giveaway!
If my husband were out safe already, then I’d definitely grab my purse (has my wallet with credit cards, IDs, SS card, phone, car keys, etc).
I just dropped my laptop and ruined my harddrive recently, so everything important since then has been uploaded to the web – wedding photos, family photos, all other important docs. Don’t have any jewelry worth saving except the ring on my finger!
Besides my husband and pets, I would grab my sentry fire box and purse. I have a smaller version of the one you show above it and I love it. I have my backup hard drive in it and important papers.
So since I own a version of the one above, if I win, can you please give it to someone else who needs it more. Thanks :)
My dog. And possibly my bedside table lamps. I love them.
I’m like a lot of others. I’d grab my cats (given they haven’t beat me out of the house) and then my purse and/or my external hard drive. I wish I could grab my dining room table that my grandfather made me, but that’s a little unrealistic to get out during a fire.
The only thing I would be sure to carry with me is my dog. Everything else is replaceable.
My daughter. And my external hard drive with all our backed up photos. :)
I would grab my purse…and make sure my Ipad is in it :)
If the kids and husband don’t count, then I would grab my work bag where I keep my purse and planner which hold passwords, jump drive, credit cards, cash (if I have any), drivers’ license, etc.
I would grab my backup hard drive, it has all the important information I would need on it!
my pets would be the obvious first choice but assuming they can run out of their house on their own, i’d grab my fine jewelry next
I would grab my external (like everyone else), my purse, and a folder full of important documents that we own. I would love to put these documents in fire-proof safe!
The cat – but I’d have HER grab my external hard drive. I guess it’s time to back that up in the cloud, too…
Assuming the cats and my fiance could get out under their own power, I would grab my purse. Not only is my wallet in there, but my laptop lives in the center divide of my purse too, so that way I’d manage to save both!
My boyfriend in one hand, my purse in the other. Prolly the only thing I could have the presence of mind to grab as its almost a reflex to always grab my purse before leaving.
my macbook pro, because that’s where all my pictures are stored.
And my stuffed lambs. I would not NOT get them. Period.
Well, if I won this safe then I’ll grab this safe which will contain important papers + stash of cash for just in case. But, since I’m currently safe-less :) I’d have to go with my wallet (can I also get my ipod & phone, too? They’re right next to my wallet!) :D
Thanks!
Let’s see… I would probably grab my external hard drive with all my photos on it. I’m a photographer, so that would devastate my business if I lost it. Pictures are hard to replace.
Besides my kids and dog (of course) I would grab the framed 8X10 picture of my Mom taken one week before she passed away. She is looking at me with the sweetest “Mom” smile you’ve ever seen.
I would probably grab my laptop. I’ve moved more and more of my data to the web, but I still have a lot on there and my backups are in the house too.
I am grabbing my dad b/c odds are he is prob parked on the couch or in his chair watching AMC movie marathons and can’t hear us yelling to get out the house. He’s my best friend so I am grabbing him!
I would grab my 5-year-old Calico cat, Tiggy. She’s the most precious thing I have and definitely irreplaceable.
My harddrive. I’ve been building my music collection for too long to let that baby burn.
my dogs, then the binder with my important papers.
I hate to be redundant, but I want that safe, so here goes:
My cat. If he’s a gimme, or my husband grabs him, I’d grab my super awesome Bug-Out bag: contains hard-to-replace docs, backup ext. hard drive, basic toiletries and change of clothes, bit of cash, back up RXs.
Thanks J$!
I will assume everything in the house with legs is already running (my wife, 3 cats and newfoundland dog).
Thanks being said, I would grab the kinda ugly vase in our china cabinet that was handed down from my great-great-great-grandmother, made in England that my Nana passed on to me this past fall. Data and technology can be replaced, this family heirloom cannot.
Besides my two boys and wife…My wallet and the keys to my vehicles.
My dog – If I didn’t have her, nothing else would matter :)
Since my daughter is not a thing I would bring my Pocketbook which also contain my backup harddrive.
Would love this safe!
I’m assuming the bf can run out himself. first thing i’d grab is the dog. if she’s a freebee too, then the “emergency” box i have created – it has copies of everything in it (id, insurance, etc.), some cash, spare keys to everything (cars, rental house, the house that is presumably burning, etc.), backup of my harddrive. the only thing is it is just a box – nothing fireproof or waterproof..i know i need to get on that – baby steps! (and why this is a perfect post/giveaway for me! haha) The bf knows to grab this box as well (and he also knows the dog comes before the box : )
I would grab my cats Beep Beep and Squeekers. I would be lost without them!
gotta be my laptop! i dont know what i would do without it. everything else can burn to the ground. i’ll use the laptop for getting insurance to buy me a new house. lol
Wallet/passport. Cats. I know that’s more than one thing but…
I would grab pictures and scrapbooks! They are very valuable to me. :)
I’d take my wallet so I can prove who I am and start the fixin’ process.
Having been through two fires in my life… not much I would take as I walked out the door…
is that even a question? MY DOG!
I would grad my emergency bag, which has all my belongings for an emergency. Keep in mind that you want a safe that is both fire and water-proof.
Of the non-living things, probably my phone.
I’d have to make sure I have the dog; I’ve scanned all of my important information (driver’s license, passport, financial) & sent it to the cloud, so I just need the dog, and maybe my roommate. :)
What a great prize! Assuming that beings are not things, I would grab my purse – and it has nothing to do with money ;)
My phone–not because it’s anything special but to call the fire department.
As long as my Wife were safe, the one thing I would grab would be my computer.
My external hard drive…quick and easy to disconnect…and the only non-living thing that is not replaceable in the house. I am so fanatical about my archived images though that I actually have two hard drives..one stored off site (at a friends house) and updated only monthly JIC my house burns down while I am not home…and just incase one dies… I would have only lost one month of photos / etc.
I would grab my two cats! (This is assuming my husband can get out on his own, obviously he comes first). Aside from that, I’d try to grab my purse, and then our portable hard drive that is full of family photos – not to mention our finances! (The hard drive is our backup to our computer – I suppose I’d put the harddrive in the safe if I win!!)
Assuming “the door handle” on my way out of the house isn’t sufficient *Smiles* I’d likely grab my External Hard Drive. Just about everything I need has been backed up to it so I would suffer less of a loss if I had that. Everything else is covered by insurance
My poor pup would be #1…
My external HD !!!
My entire life is in there…
Well this is assuming my husband, baby and dog are safe and alive.
I would grab my dogs (I have two, but at 9 lbs a piece, I count them as one.) They are the only family i have, and I would rather have them than any material thing.
My laptop so I cankeep visiting https://budgetsaresexy.rockstarfinancials.com!
I’d grab my laptop. After making sure the hubby kids and dog were safe, of course :)
My laptop. Sure, I have backups, but that’d be a pain and having the laptop would make life a lot easier after losing everything else in a fire.
I’d grab my wallet with credit cards, ID, etc.
I’d grab my newborn daughter and pray my cats could find their own way out of the house (and wouldn’t be too scared to do so).
Assuming my family and dogs were safe, I would have to grab my laptop. it has everything important on.
Since it’s just me, I’d have to grab my laptop. Important documents, photos (scans from the past), family info, memories, etc. It’s amazing how far we’ve come with technology.
I would grab my photo albums from my trips around the world!
Besides my kids and hubby, definitely my photo albums. I will never be able to replace all those years that has been captured in those albums.
Purse is a good answer but since I always grab that before leaving my apartment, that’s a given. Besides my purse, I would say my grandmother’s Bible where she kept family records. It belonged to her mother and since they are both dead, it definitely can’t be replaced.
My bug-out-bag. (Thanks AoM)
My kids!!!!! The photos are all digital, so that’s good… the kids and the dog. I think that’s the most important stuff!! Thanks for hosting!
My backpack (of course, it’s stuffed with emergency items and important stuff)
Children and husband aside?? My external hard drive!!!!! I’ve got 15,000 pictures of my kids, husband, family, tax returns info, my journals, etc.
It would be my wallet and envelop of important documents. Then if time permitted my laptop
My dog – although that would be a struggle.
I’d grab my laptop bag – it has work laptop, backup of my personal laptop, wallet, toiletries, snacks, enough stuff to get me through to the next day. I’m assuming, sadly, the cat will be hiding, but if she’s not, I’d grab her too (the laptop bag is next to the couch, where she always sleeps), so maybe that breaks the one thing rule.
My greyhound, Miss Penny Lane!
My external HDD. Got all of the life-planning and financial docs for my family.
My external hard drive. Besides the usual pictures and documents, it has all my thesis research!
I’d have to take my laptop. Nothing else is really just easy to grab on the go.
I would grab my purse and (if possible) some very precious photos of friends and family.
This is a tough one. I’ve at least narrowed it down to three – laptop, phone, wallet. I think I’ll have to go with my laptop.
We have an emergency bag that has a bit of cash, some snacks, blankets, and other useful items in it in case we needed to leave the house in a hurry. If we had to leave quickly, that would be what we grabbed.
I keep planning to prepare my emergency bag, for me and the cat. So, I’d grab the cat, my laptop/backup hard drive, purse I’d have anyway, photo albums, and some special family jewelry from my nightstand. I pray I’m never in this position, as I saw the heartache following Katrina. Some were prepared, many were not.
Definitely the pets (thankfully there are three of us in the house, and three cats) ;-)
Like so many others – my first thought was “my cat!”…and then I realized I should have said my husband:-)
My filing cabinet. . .but if I win this I can scratch that off my list. . .
I’d grab my wallet and important bank cards, ID’s!!
Family members aside I’d definitely grab my diaper bag/purse/stow-it-all. Can’t survive without that thing!
My cat. I’d grab her and run.
Family photos. I have hundreds of photos dating back to the late 1800’s. Besides family, everything else can be replaced.
xoxo
Thanks for the giveaway! I would take my wallet, laptop and phone.
Aside from my family & pets, I would have said my family photo album. But I think others are correct, I have more photos on my external hard drive now plus all the financial information and documents are there now too.
My laptop for sure. On it I have pictures, tax info, scans of our birth and marriage certificates, etc. Plus, it’s pretty close to the door, so that helps in the decsion. ;)
When family and my puppy are out, I’d grab my backpack and purse. They both have everything in them.
I guess I’d grab my financials folder since it’s all PAPER and would not survive the 1550°F temperatures like the sentry safe. oh, and my new j.crew dress. just being honest ;)
The drawer with my ancestry information in it. Pictures of my relatives, their mourning cards and the printoffs from the gedcom (the database of your people). That stuff is irreplacable.
Of course, I’d hope my cat would be smart enough to follow me out the door!
I’ll definitely grab my purse, I put everything in it from my cellphone to my wallet to my passport to car/house keys and I make sure to put it in one spot(by the door), so that I never forget where it is. Plus, I dont have any hierlooms at home and all my old pictures are stored on the web, so those are easy to obtain.
My tiny fireproof box that has my social security card, passport and other important docs in it. Of course if I win this safe I’ll be able to grab important docs like my tax returns, too.
A photo of my family. Those black and whites are precious to me.
My laptop so I can blog about it!
I’d grab my kids, husband and dog! Material items can always be replaced. :)
My wife and dogs and cats and then my laptop and external HD where backups of all my important documents are kept.
My pants. They have my wallet, knife, money and keys. Everything else is backed up at a secondary location.
My apartment caught on fire 2 weeks ago and I yelled at my fiance to get out and I grabbed our son and got out. So I can say with 100% certainty that I would grab my son.
My car keys, Laptop, Wallet, and my small sentry safe. Even though I have a sentry safe already I am running out of space so I need the one your giving away. Thanks.
P.S. IF I still have a minute to spare I’d grab my watches. Gotta love the time pieces!
Our dog Tobey. :)
I would grab my current lock box which isn’t fireproof that has my birth certificate and other important papers in it…
My dog….if I could manage to carry the 95lbs beast down the stairs.
My dog would be my #1 priority. If we’re excluding sentient beings and only talking material things to grab it would be my wallet.
If I had only one thing to grab it is obvious – I would grab my daughter and head for an escape.
My dog and kids for sure. Husband is an iffy.
I’d say my external hard drive, everything is backed up to that, and I do mean everything.
My kids! Since my daughter is still in a crib, I’d say that would be most important. Otherwise, my purse.
I’m gonna go with external harddrive considering it has most of my photos on it.
I’d grab myfiling cabinet. All my important crap hopefully minus back surgery.
Baby, husband, 2 cats. In that order. Everything else is replaceable.
Assuming pets and husband are already safe, I would say photos. My kids are adults and my memory of them growing up might fade over time.
enter me, please.
you know what I mean.
OOPs-I forgot to answer……Um, my new Sentry safe, of course!
I would grab my wife and dog. Everything else can be sorted out in the insurance claim
one thing..people and pets already out..would be my safe i do have..i dont know if it would sustain a big house fire.
my family pictures
My MacBook and hard drive. My life is digital.
That is a hard one to answer really. But when it comes down to it, the pictures of my ancestors, my children, family and friends are really the only thing that are irreplaceable. So it would be all of my photos – which includes all of the loose pics, and the ones in albums, and frames.
Scanning through the other comments, I realized that my purse is a great “one item” besides family…it’s quick to grab and has some basic necessities. But it reminds me that I need to update my financial files that I keep at my parents’ house. After Hurricane Katrina, I read a good tip about keeping a copy of all of that stuff in a safe location away from where you live. I don’t live in an area particularly in danger of hurricanes, but it could happen…not to mention any other reason that the whole house is swept away or completely destroyed. I also need to get backups of pictures into that file.
I would grab my computer bag, where I keep my laptop & external hard drive.
My family–My husband is disabled, and of course my kids– need I say more
Hubby would grab the laptop and I would grab my purse. We back up almost everything on the cloud. Would love a firesafe box that would hold our will and a few other things that we used to keep in a safe deposit box.
If you could only grab ONE thing in the middle of a house fire, what would it be? Any Family that is still left in the house of course. If they were already safe then I would grab this safe if I win it.
Nothing!! Nothing in my house is worth staying in a burning building to collect it! I’d be sure my husband and baby were out the door – and then I’d be out too. Stuff can always be replaced. Peoples lives can’t:)
Assuming people and animals were safe and it was on my way out, my phone. Having to get a new one and change the number over seems like a huge hassle, especially when you’d be keeping in touch with family, friends, contractors, insurance people etc.
Also, a backup kept in the same place as the original files isn’t really a backup, just sayin’ :P. We use Crashplan for automatic offsite backup, it also let’s you backup to friends and your other computers for free.
I’m actually not sure. I would probably grab my purse but might try and save some of my art (some of those pieces are very personal and special).
After my family members, I’d grab this sweet file/safe that I’m about to win!
My desktop computer. My life is on this thing. Can I strap my DSLR to the desktop though, I would rather not lose it, and the DSLR sits on top of it anyway.
My cats. They are my babies.
These are pretty damn interesting to read :) Picking a winner in 24 hours!!!
If i could take only one thing…i’m sure hubby kiddos and pets are a given…but i would take my computer tower. It has my pictures and budget spreadsheets
If I had a safe, I would just pick that up since it would be loaded with all that I would need at emergency time.
I’d grab my baby. If my husband has already grabbed the baby, I’d grab the cat. If we’re going with non-living things, purse with wallet and cellphone would be next.
The one thing I would grab would be my computer tower. Assuming of course that all my family is safe, the tower represents my life almost entirely. It contains my financial information, my link to needed services (and Budgets Are $exy) and online communication with everyone, as well as a storage unit for family photos. Yup, that would be my “grab”. Thanks,
Mike
Assuming my lil ones are already out I would grab my work bag…..it usually has my laptop and my phone in it as well as some money.
I would grab my kids first in a house fire……….
Kids, cats, wedding album, laptop, phone. It probably depends on how bad the fire was, and how much time I thought I had.

This storage container is very durable. We are already using a Sentry case, it’s very secure and that it is fire-proof.
