Wallet Crash #5: Tom Corley – Author of Rich Habits

We’re baaaaaack!!! Getting our crash on again with super successful people in our finance world. Up this time is my new best friend sorta-kinda friend, and #1 selling author, Tom Corley from RichHabits.net! Yayyy!!!! Crowd goes wild!!!

Here’s a quick intro about Tom for those who don’t know of him:

At age 9 his family went from being multi-millionaires to broke in just one night. For five years, Tom studied the daily activities of 233 wealthy people and 128 people living in poverty.  He discovered there is a difference the size of the Grand Canyon between the daily habits of the wealthy and the poor.

If you haven’t checked out his blog or his book before, you seriously need to. As I mentioned the other month, I am quite A-D-D-I-C-T-E-D to this man’s stuff. Mainly because his research is just super fascinating and makes you think, but also because it’s all broken down in super easy chunks to understand and digest. Here are a few of them:

  • 6% of wealthy say what’s on their mind vs. 69% for poor.
  • 6% of wealthy watch reality TV vs. 78% for poor.
  • 81% of wealthy maintain a to-do list vs. 19% for poor.
  • 79% of wealthy network 5 hours or more each month vs. 16% for poor.
  • 88% of wealthy read 30 minutes or more each day for education or career reasons vs 2% for poor.

If you like this sorta stuff, you’ll like his book: Rich Habits – The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals. Where he shares the ten principles created through years of researching the daily success habits of his wealthiest clients (he’s also a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Financial Planner, and President of Cerefice & Company, btw).

It took him 9 years to fulfill this dream of his, and his book is now taking off all over with the help of people like Dave Ramsey. This guy’s the definition of a hustler if I’ve ever seen one.

Now Onto Tom’s Wallet!

unique wallet tom corley

[In his own words…]

Very boring CPA-type wallet:

  • Insurance cards
  • License
  • My get out of tickets “200 Club” gold card
  • My AMEX card
  • Financial Planning Bank of America card
  • Some business cards

What you will notice is unique about my wallet is that I have a customized wallet. My wallet has a little notebook to write down names, facts, info, happy birthdays etc.

As part of my Rich Habits, I take this info and transfer it over to my Outlook database. This database is linked to my cell phone. The database includes information about all my contacts that I gather using the wallet notebook strategy.

This wallet notebook strategy helps me do the following:

  1. Birthday notifications
  2. Name recognition grouping strategy
  3. Gather facts about every one of my contacts.

Those stats about the rich vs poor remind me a lot of the stuff you find in “The Millionaire Next Door”. It’s interesting to see what the actual percentages end up being. And I always knew that reality TV was trying to hold you down in the “poor” zone.

Where does one get a “custom wallet”?

Yeah, great question! I LOVE the idea of a notepad in it, but man it must be big and clunky? I’ll have to continue just using my money clip and pen.. I’m fine with my hands being my paper ;)

“My get out of tickets “200 Club” gold card” Um…. this sounds awesome.

Love the custom wallet w/ notepad. Awesome.

It has “Pimp” written all over it, doesn’t it? :)

This is a great list! While far from wealthy, it seems like I am “on it” with most of the habits. I need to work on saying what’s on my mind and networking more.

So, on that note….here’s what’s on my mind…this blog ROCKS and I am going to comment more in an effort to practice my networking skills. :-)

Rich Habits is on my reading list. Heard Tom a few month back on Dave Ramsey. Love his stuff.

Yeah – Dave helped to really explode his stuff. Was the tipping point from him I believe.

I need a little notebook in my wallet. Ever since I started writing, my memory has gone to sh*t. Too many ideas that pop up and never return ;)

Right?? Gotta use a notepad app on the phone – that’s what I do :)

I thought it looked cute too.

I am a little confused about the first statistic. Is saying what is on your mind a bad thing?

    1. J. Money February 28, 2014 at 5:54 PM

Yeah, I’m guessing like more negative/opinionated stuff. Like what happens on reality shows :)

    2. Lance February 28, 2014 at 6:29 PM

I’m pretty sure it is a mental filter thing. Like, a rich person wouldn’t tell his wife her project was crazy even though you do, indeed, think the project is crazy. However, a poor person would.

Does making a grocery list count for something? I noticed he wrote down chicken and olives.JK Zing 1! I do make a to do list every day. Yay! I don’t watch reality shows. Double Zing! I’m going to work on my networking. I wonder if the wealthy don’t say what’s on their mind bc if you have 99 problems wealth can solve 102 of them. LOL So why say it?

    1. J. Money March 4, 2014 at 5:20 PM

      Haha…. You’re too much.

  8. Michael@Save-Invest-Grow March 2, 2014 at 12:09 PM

Really interesting stuff. Sometimes its the simplest things like writing down ideas right away and coming back to them later. I often wonder how many great ideas get forgotten every day? Also the reality TV numbers are interesting and a pretty spot-on indicator in my opinion.

    1. J. Money March 4, 2014 at 5:21 PM

A TON are forgotten! But maybe that means they weren’t all that great to begin with??

Whaaaaat is a 200 Club gold card, and how do I get one? Does he get out of speeding tickets? What does this MEAN?!

I mean, I know I’ve been out of the country for a while, but I literally have no clue.

    1. Jen March 4, 2014 at 1:02 PM

The 200 club? It’s a charity for police families: A non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial support for the families of police, fire and rescue personnel who have lost their lives in the line-of-duty.

      1. J. Money March 4, 2014 at 5:23 PM

Ahhh very cool! Which means if they stop you and see that sticker on the car (which is what we used to have once) you get better odds of getting a pass… Never knew it was called the “200” club, but maybe there’s all kinds of similar things.
