i would redo my living room/family room. The couch in it was a garage sale couch along with the TV. The room is very large and the TV is very small. So we sit maybe 25 feet away from a 32 inch TV. There are just a couple decorations and the room is just bare. I know my wife would love a chance to remake this room if we had the $$$! I know its in her savings plan.

  2. Sam H November 12, 2010 at 8:58 AM

My living room could use a makeover because I have a couch that I was paid to take from an old college roommate. It is red, green, and white and very uncomfortable! Festive for Christmas, not so much for everyday! :)

  3. Uncle El November 12, 2010 at 8:58 AM

My vote would have to be for the bedroom, picked up a dresser and a bed separately because of a sale and they dont match. So I would love to get a nice 7 piece bedroom set that looks mature and sexy, Real Wood of course.

  4. Corie November 12, 2010 at 9:04 AM

My office could use a makeover. We have an old desk in there and not much else – could use some shelving and storage for all of our stuff!

  5. Kevin November 12, 2010 at 9:04 AM

I would remake my bedroom because it’s the only room that’s mine (I live with roommates). Also because my furniture is from my parents house that I got years ago.

  6. Vishal Boda November 12, 2010 at 9:08 AM

I would be remake my bathroom…for long i have its had some leaking pipes….

    so would spend on that…

    thank u..

  7. Michelle M. November 12, 2010 at 9:17 AM

Thanks for the giveaway. Definitely the home office, it could be set up so much more efficiently with the right furniture.

  8. Josh T. November 12, 2010 at 9:26 AM

I would remake my bedroom, because it is definitely in need of an room makeover. I live with roommates and am a recent graduate in some serious need of an “adult” bedroom. I’m not living out of a race car bed, but my room does still look like a dorm room. Not only that, but I have to move out of my place in January and this would give me the opportunity to get rid of some of my bedroom junk and upgrade it.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  9. Jenn November 12, 2010 at 9:48 AM

I’d remake my office, maybe a new desk and a dartboard

  10. CrystalGB November 12, 2010 at 9:52 AM

My bedroom needs a makeover. None of the furniture matches.

  11. Forest November 12, 2010 at 9:53 AM

I’d definitely like to redo my home office. Now that I’m spending more days working from home, I’d really like a sweet set up!

  12. Jenna November 12, 2010 at 9:56 AM

I would makeover my bedroom. I moved here from Canada and couldn’t take any of my good furniture from home. In about 2 hours I had to buy and bring back all furniture to my new apartment. Needless to say, it didn’t turn out as great as I’d want it to given my time constraints.

  13. Beckey & Jeff November 12, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Our bedroom, hands down. Nothing in there matches because we refuse to spend money to get a matching set while we pay down debt. Plus, everything in there is still functional, just not appeasing to the eye.

  14. Jennifer November 12, 2010 at 9:57 AM

My bedroom needs a makeover bad! All our furniture is hand me downs, and none of it matches… yuck,

  15. Lindsay November 12, 2010 at 9:59 AM

I would redo our bathroom, all of our stuff is hanging on hooks in the bathroom because we don’t have enough storage space.

  16. Chung L November 12, 2010 at 10:01 AM

Our living room definitely needs a makeover as all the furniture are old and it’s messy.

  17. Julianna November 12, 2010 at 10:07 AM

I’m moving to a new place and have ZERO money to spend on new decor. I’d love a room makeover

  18. gina November 12, 2010 at 10:08 AM

For sure, my living room needs a makeover. It is so tiny, all of the furniture is too big, they are mismatched hand-me-downs that now have messy slipcovers on them. It is truly a nightmare!!

  19. Grant November 12, 2010 at 10:12 AM

It’s wonderful that this is a FREE giveaway. However, one must be advised against using places like Rent-a-Center if you are truly serious about personal finance. Often renting to “own” can cost you a great deal more than if you had SAVED to own. In the weekly RAC flyer, you can “own” a 40 inch LED HDTV for just $24.99 a week. But the fine print points out that’s only if you make 104 payments. THAT IS TWO YEARS.

Total cost is more than $2500. A similar TV on Amazon is $859. So buyer (renter?) beware.

  20. Nate R November 12, 2010 at 10:14 AM

My bedroom is in need of a makeover. Brown carpet leftover from the 80’s and a mismatched set of furniture leftover from college.

  21. Denis November 12, 2010 at 10:17 AM

Easy! My kitchen!! I’m a single guy who doesn’t do much cooking and partially and the fact that my kitchen is so bland and outdated really, doesn’t inspire me =/
So because of that, I spend too much mula on restaurants and fast foods.
A kitchen makeover would make that my new fav spot in the house :)

But a $50 gift card would help with things like a rice pot, and nice pots and pans to get me started!

  22. Edward - Entry Level Dilemma November 12, 2010 at 10:28 AM

My home office could use some help. The printer sits on top of the filing cabinet, the filing cabinet is bowing (it’s a heavy printer, and it’s been through 3 moves so far), and the desk chair, while comfy, was completely clawed up when I had a cat. $50 would get me a new filing cabinet, some wood to make a stand for the printer, and some fabric to make a new cover for the chair (you can save a lot of money when you make things yourself!)

  23. stacey November 12, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Our family room. We have old furniture that the dogs have ruined, and I just can’t quite get a good layout going on. It would be nice to have a nice relaxing place to sit by the fire, watch tv or play family games…ahhhhh….

  24. Jen November 12, 2010 at 10:31 AM

Our living room needs a makeover BAD! It’s just thrown together furniture with no real unifying look or theme….

  25. Monica November 12, 2010 at 10:33 AM

My bedroom could use a makeover!

  26. Monica November 12, 2010 at 10:34 AM

My berdroom could use a makeover because it looks the same as 15 years ago!

  27. Gina November 12, 2010 at 10:39 AM

My living room needs a makeover as it has no furniture in it!!

  28. Brian November 12, 2010 at 10:49 AM

My living room needs a makeover as I have just cobbled together cheap mismatched furniture since I moved in late August, I call it eclectic but truthfully its just bad.

  29. WR November 12, 2010 at 10:51 AM

Stay far away from Rent-a-Center (or any furniture rental place for that matter)

A $500 sofa will cost you $1500 by the time you finish paying the contract.
Better to hit Craiglist and buy a “thoroughly tested” one for 100 bucks.

(We watch TV and play games from a $1800.00 Leather Sectional that cost us $300.00 on Craigslist)

still probably won’t hurt to sign up for their giveaway…

Rule of thumb: buy pre-owned and invest the difference if what matters

    -WR

  30. WR November 12, 2010 at 10:54 AM

    IN what matters.
Second rule of thumb: Proofread before clicking ‘submit’

  31. phanzy November 12, 2010 at 10:57 AM

bedroom… builder’s beige and no curtains. wifey and i are putting on a show for the neighbors every night….

  32. Melanie Spring November 12, 2010 at 11:01 AM

My roommate’s room. He hates dust so he doesn’t have curtains. He has a mattress on the floor & his 200 pairs of shoes all over his floor. He is VERY clean but VERY minimalist & needs some creativity. The rest of our house was decorated by myself & has a homey feel but his room is a total mancave. Please fix. Please!

  33. MainlineMom November 12, 2010 at 11:02 AM

My office is what needs a total makeover. I don’t even work in there because it’s so bad. I have overflowing bookshelves, no space for more books, and a particle board desk that got soaked from the bottom when my basement flooded so the front of the file drawer fell completely off. LOL. Kinda hard to use that way. I have overflowing filing cabinets too. BAH!

  34. Justin Hollender November 12, 2010 at 11:06 AM

Our living room because we have been buying all our furniture off craigslist since we didn’t have much to spend. It would be nice to have something newer.

  35. Wojo November 12, 2010 at 11:11 AM

The office–it desperately needs some furniture and desk/chair.

  36. Grace November 12, 2010 at 11:13 AM

My living room could use a make-over. Ever since my bf moved in with me it just feels so crowded in there and we never have enough seating for our company. :(

  37. Chris November 12, 2010 at 11:14 AM

Every room in my house could use a makeover! If I were to pick one I would say the dining room because it is pretty sparse on furniture.

  38. Jackie November 12, 2010 at 11:15 AM

My office needs a makeover! It’s been the corner of my bedroom for a year and now that I’m moving to a new place, all I have is a beat up desk and boxes of books.

  39. Danny @Frugal Quack November 12, 2010 at 11:19 AM

Sign me up my office lair needs a SERIOUS makeover. I’m typing from a sewing machine desk. lol. Ouch!

Great giveaway – would love to win the $50.

  40. Serenity November 12, 2010 at 11:22 AM

What a thoughtful giveaway! Certainly would be more helpful to some people to get furniture as opposed to $50, but hey – either would be nice for me!

While my dinky little apartment has plenty of issues, my bedroom is the one that really needs a makeover. Here’s what’s up:

    – My full size bed is on a frame that has three wheels and a large wooden block holding it up.
    – I don’t have a headboard
    – The box springs has holes in it
    – The mattress sinks in the middle
    – I don’t have a dresser, but two 3-drawer plastic carts and 3 large rubber totes to store my clothes in and out of my closet. And they are falling apart.
    – I have a mirror propped up on one of the 3-drawer carts to simulate what a real, nice dresser would look like (but it’s not fooling anybody)

I’ve been checking for cheap used stuff on Craigslist, but nothing’s in my price range/better quality than what I have

  41. WR November 12, 2010 at 11:31 AM

@ Justin – Not Newer, just better

RAC stuff, in addition to being a financial nightmare, is rather boring.

I’ll offer up some creative ideas for you all:

Every home worth it’s salt should have at least one:

    1. Antler Display: http://www.ehow.com/how_5124034_decorate-deer-antlers.html
you don’t need to be a hunter, roadkill is fine
    2. Mural: http://aartvarks.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/legoroom.jpg?w=500&h=333
    3. Awkward Family Photo : http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/2010/10/13/suspicious-minds/

None of these great ideas will break anyone’s budget and RAC does not seem to have any in stock.

  42. Maggie November 12, 2010 at 11:31 AM

I would make over my bedroom – need to add more bookshelves for my ever expanding collection of books!

  43. Ryan November 12, 2010 at 11:44 AM

I would remake our kitchen and add some tile backsplash!

  44. Sandy X November 12, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Thank you Grant and WR for pointing out how consumer UN-friendly places like RAC, Aarons, ColorTyme, et al are.

    J. Money, I’m disappointed that you would endorse the likes of this company. A give-a-way is nice, but think about how this company achieves its bottom line…by ravaging the pockets of its customers. I sincerely hope none of your readers consider doing business with the RTO (rent-to-own) industry. A person can easily set aside $45/week for several months to purchase whatever item their hearts desire. Also, items at RTO stores are not guaranteed to be new; customers may pay inflated prices for used items. What’s the point of that?

  45. Johnny November 12, 2010 at 12:01 PM

one last room to makeover…and that’s my office…or aka storage room right now. i’d like to fit a desk in there among the boxes. and then go from there. one baby step at a time. :D

  46. michelle November 12, 2010 at 12:06 PM

the formal living room in my parents’ house needs to be redone. the ceiling caved in for no good reason so all the furniture is covered in insulation, dust and drywall. mom’s forced to look at new couches and a coffee table. dad’s been fixing the ceiling. it’s coming along, but still a mess

  47. Mary November 12, 2010 at 12:13 PM

My living room needs curtains! My neighbors can see everything I do… not good.

  48. Grace November 12, 2010 at 12:27 PM

Right now I live in a studio, but plan to move to a one-bedroom apartment in the next few months. All my rooms need a makeover. If I get a giftcard, I will use it towards a mattress or a bedframe. Everything else I plan to get from freecycle or craigslist.

  49. Laura November 12, 2010 at 12:40 PM

I would redo my living room. All is has in it is my desk, a bookshelf, and 1 chair. I can’t really have company over and it’s a pretty sad room to see when I first walk in.

  50. Sarah November 12, 2010 at 12:44 PM

We have an effing huge living room. I’m not kidding, we’ve fit like 50 people in there before. It can sit around 35 comfortably. The problem is, the vastness of the space makes it great to have people there when we have parties, but the rest of the time, the space sits mostly unused. We need a room makeover to make the living room less of an eyesore and more home-y.

  51. Matt November 12, 2010 at 12:51 PM

My bedroom could use a makeover. Just not enough storage space

  52. Betsy November 12, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Our bedroom needs a makeover…especially some kind of artwork to hang over the bed.

  53. One Frugal Girl November 12, 2010 at 12:57 PM

I could really use some luck right about now, so I’m throwing my hat in the ring and hoping this will be the first break among many. I’d redo my living room, where my sweet, beautiful, loving cat has kindly ripped nearly all the fabric from the furniture.

  54. Ninja November 12, 2010 at 1:13 PM

    My office sucks. Nuff said.

  55. mila November 12, 2010 at 1:13 PM

our living room could use a make over, it’s a bit bare at this point

  56. Jamie November 12, 2010 at 1:20 PM

We need to makeover the back guest bedroom, because soon it will do double duty as guest bedroom/ baby girl bedroom and it needs some pinking up!!! Thanks for hosting!

  57. retirebyforty November 12, 2010 at 1:29 PM

My condo living room needs a makeover because it is empty right now. We just got the place and only furnished the bedroom so far.

  58. Maria November 12, 2010 at 1:32 PM

Reasons why my master bedroom NEEDS a makeover:
    1. My dresser was in my daughter’s nusery who is now a junior in COLLEGE!
    2. My nightstands are bookshelves that were in my daughter’s nursery. (see #1)
    3. My bedroom TV is a 13″ tv/vcr combo that was purchased over 10 years ago.
    (Yes….You read correctly…VCR!)
    4. The lamp on my husband’s nightstand has beer logos on the shade. (UGH!)
    5. I’ve been married 23 years and have never had a bedroom set.
    6. My husband’s dresser is a hand me down dresser that he received when we got married in 1987.
    HELP!!!

  59. Diana November 12, 2010 at 1:35 PM

Our home office definitely needs a makeover. Actually, it really just needs to be “made” because it’s never really felt like an office. We moved to our condo over a year ago, and there are still boxes in the office that haven’t been unpacked. Nothing’s organized. It’s just terrible. It feels like a grossly oversized closet that never got any love.

  60. Wealthy Immigrant November 12, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Thanks for the giveaway! My home doesn’t need a makeover but I would use the Visa card to buy a futon.

  61. Kristy November 12, 2010 at 2:27 PM

The living room. Every piece of furniture is a hand-me-down from parents or friends. It looks like a dorm room. And I’m almost 30.

  62. Kevin I November 12, 2010 at 2:28 PM

My living room needs a make-over because it’s never really transitioned well.
Instead of reflecting who we are now, it’s like a patchwork of the old bachelor pad, my wife’s old room, the old newlywed nest and now the family’s room with space for the baby’s interest and toys.

It’s like our life on shuffle instead of a nice room.

  63. Kelli November 12, 2010 at 2:34 PM

I would “makeover” the basement. It’s unfinished and has never had anything in it since the house was built two years ago. It has the furnace, water heater, water softener, and maybe two boxes and our luggage in it right now. That’s it! It already has a plumbing rough-in and a good deal of space that’s currently being wasted. The hubby would love a man cave with a sofa, recliner, new TV, etc. If we didn’t go that route it would be nice to create an extra bedroom and bathroom down there.

  64. Vin November 12, 2010 at 2:47 PM

I would make over my family room. We spend a ton of time in that room and it shows!!!!

  65. Jo November 12, 2010 at 2:49 PM

The family room is in need of a make over. Hopefully, I would be able to keep my son from jumping on a new couch!!!!

  66. Debra November 12, 2010 at 3:00 PM

We’ve got an empty bedroom we used to rent out that needs to be made over into a nursery for our baby girl who will be joining us soon.

  67. Christine November 12, 2010 at 3:06 PM

I’ll be moving into a new apt shortly that actually is bigger than a single! So I definitely would need to redo the living room there as all I would have is a bookshelf, tv, tv stand, coffee table…and that’s about it!

  68. Devin November 12, 2010 at 3:13 PM

    The Kitchen! It’s outdated :(

  69. Mami2jcn November 12, 2010 at 3:35 PM

My dining room needs a makeover because right now it’s just a dumping ground for school books and papers.

  70. Yana November 12, 2010 at 4:18 PM

I’d say that it is our bedroom that most needs a makeover, with the main thing being a new complete bed. Some kind of bug infestation seems to have occurred over the summer, in the bedroom, and in spite of extermination, treating the dog for fleas and *still* continuously washing sheets and vacuuming, I am still bumpy and itchy. Gross, I know! Whatever it is that ails us is invisible, other than the effects. I can’t wear flip-flops and it is hard to wear shoes, because one of my feet is swollen and apparently without remedy. I bought Birkenstocks, which is the best shoe idea ever. But yeah, we need a makeover, to say the least.

  71. Laura November 12, 2010 at 4:34 PM

Which room of your house needs a makeover, and WHY?
Well as of this moment all of them do because we are selling the house. But if I had to choose one it’d be the kitchen because it is a bit outdated and needs new cabinetry for sure, as well as a newer countertop – I dream of granite. :)

  72. John November 12, 2010 at 4:44 PM

I would like a makeover of my living room so I could host more parties!!

  73. Lynne Phillips November 12, 2010 at 5:22 PM

I would love to makeover my bedroom because it needs a new color, it is plain right now!

  74. Kevin Vesga November 12, 2010 at 5:23 PM

My office aka the computer room needs a makeover. The computer is crammed in a corner with a tiny desk and the printer just sits atop a file cabinet. And the main desk is very big and occupies more room than I’d like it to.

  75. Josh November 12, 2010 at 6:10 PM

My living room because I’ve been putting all my money towards my student loans and haven’t had any money left to put towards decorating :(

  76. Cheryl November 12, 2010 at 6:32 PM

Master bath need s MAJOR makeover! Shower stall re-tiled, new doors – Florida’s hard water has stained them badly! New vanity, – still have the original circa 1982! Yikes! Oh, and take down the WALL mirror, install something smaller and more modern – nobody needs to see THAT much of my nekkidness!!

  77. Trina November 12, 2010 at 6:55 PM

The family room! We got our furniture before we had a family and it has seen better days. 3 kids in 3 years can really do some damage to a sectional couch;)
    Trina

  78. StenvenBe November 12, 2010 at 7:24 PM

sweet dream with a new makeover bedroom

  79. Jeannine November 12, 2010 at 7:30 PM

    ANY room= 1 word StOrAgE :o)

  80. Kasey November 12, 2010 at 7:42 PM

The family room/hangout room – it needs a new “big chair”, and probably an overall freshen up

  81. Cat November 12, 2010 at 7:50 PM

Which room of your house needs a makeover, and WHY?

My house was built in 1920, and my mother and I live in it and split a mortgage that we can’t pay. The entire place needs a makeover thats for sure, and not even fancy nice stuff, but better insulation, better windows, less creeky floors etc.

If i had to pick a room, it would be the family room though, because although the retro green striped couch looks awesome, its not the most comfortable thing in the world, nor is the other strangely colored furniture. I bet it would look great with a flat screen and a nice big wrap around couch that wasn’t flat…

  82. Kim November 12, 2010 at 8:53 PM

My office needs a makeover. I work full-time at home. I use a card table for my desk. I would love a “real” desk.

  83. Melissa November 12, 2010 at 9:20 PM

My bathroom! I moved into a new rental house five months ago and the bathroom could use a new showerhead.

  84. Mrs. Money November 12, 2010 at 9:22 PM

I’d redo my living room- it is pretty bad!

  85. Shauna L November 12, 2010 at 9:52 PM

The office/extra room needs to be made over into a nursery…for the baby that’s coming in about 12 weeks. Yeah, probably need to get started on that project…

  86. meeyeehere aka Rachel Crisman November 12, 2010 at 11:36 PM

My kitchen is the room that needs the most help at my house. We spend most of our time in the kitchen yet it is the room we have never dona a thing to.It needs new tile,I would love to get rid of the paneling too
The cabinet doors are all coming off and our dishwasher has never worked.

  87. Audrey H. November 12, 2010 at 11:54 PM

My living room needs a make over for sure. New flooring and paint, probably new drapes and and … lol :)

our basement bathroom is in desperate need of attention!

The “office” needs a room make over. It really isn’t an office because it is covered with kids toys and there is nothing “office-y” about it.

My dh’s “man cave” needs a makeover. We had a Halloween party and my dh’s clutzy friends spilled beer on his pool table and knocked over an antique slot machine.

Two words: 1950’s Cabinets. UGH! Kitchen, by far. Thankfully, we are almost at our goal and over Christmas we are redoing it! Whoo hoo!

I would redo my living room. Almost all of the furniture we have, including the couch, the recliner, and the computer desk were brought into the marriage by my wife over eight years ago. They weren’t in that great condition then! Definitely time for an upgrade.

My bedroom really needs some spiffing up. The bedframe creaks and groans with every tiny movement and was lovingly gnawed on by my dog. I have two mismatched dressers, one of which is missing a drawer that recently broke. Another drawer comes close to falling on my toes every time I open it!

Our living room needs a make-over. With 60 year old carpet, 40 year old paneling, and a couch that doesn’t match the carpet! :-)

  96. Cyndy November 13, 2010 at 3:43 PM

My living room. It’s a mishmash of furniture that doesn’t work together on top of ugly shag carpeting.

  97. Karmella November 13, 2010 at 6:34 PM

My bedroom – I am not even going to tell you the furniture situation, it is embarrassing – it’s desperate!!

My bathroom is in serious makeover need!

  99. Ernest S. November 13, 2010 at 10:09 PM

The kitchen needs some serious work. We’ve got a busted drawer and a counter top with a ton of scrapes and scratches.

  101. Monique November 14, 2010 at 2:39 AM

I’d redo my office! There is still a youth chair and desk from when I was young

Which room of your house needs a makeover, and WHY?

Living Room. There is nothing in it.

  104. Em D. November 14, 2010 at 4:37 PM

My living room could use a little love. It was furnished with cheap left overs years ago and nothing has changed!

  105. Stefanie November 14, 2010 at 6:22 PM

I would tackle our bedroom… it needs a little help!

  106. Laura @ so alaurable November 14, 2010 at 8:55 PM

I was pretty harsh on RAC in an earlier post so if I win I will donate the giftcard to charity…

So, let me take a stab at this:

Which room of your house needs a makeover, and WHY?

I would have to choose our kitchen. We bought a bank owned foreclosure with ‘most’ of the things we wanted: sprawling acreage, a nice neighborhood and great schools. The incredible deal we were able to get was aided in no small part by the horrendous black and white ceramic tile floor, the repulsive 1970’s cabinets (painted black by an apparently non-sighted, extremely nervous painter) and the do-it-yourself light kit that must have been on sale somewhere nearby those many years ago. It turns out that the floor job was the 3rd layer of a great “floor sandwich” that permanently traps the kitchen appliances under the countertops. Said countertops are covered in what appears to be bathroom tile from an abandoned elementary school. Since we have a few priority projects that need to get wrapped up before we tackle the kitchen, I fear we have somehow allowed ourselves to slip into a mild state of “Stockhom Syndrome”. It is growing on us (a little). We are beginning to sympathize with the perpetrator of this kitchen disaster and I would not be too surprised if some of the ‘design elements’ remain. Maybe the “country accents” ceiling fan with the tulip bulbs, who knows?

I would definitely redo my bedroom. To fit our house in our budget I share with my baby daughter to let my teen son have his own space. I could really use at least half a room without tiny plastic horses all over it!

    *GIVEAWAY OVER*

Congrats goes out to….. drum roll please…. Beckey & Jeff! Congrats! Look for an email out soon to claim your $50 card :) And thanks to everyone who participated! We’ll have to do another one soon, but not for a bit…. these wear me out! haha…

And I’ll have to do better about screening my giveaways too – It didn’t occur to me until after that places who rent things out aren’t the best for our finances. So thanks to everyone who pointed that out. I was too excited to do the giveaway that I forgot to give it some thought! Although some of thee places may be good for temporary situations, all depending on what you need exactly and what’s going on. In either case though, just make sure to do your homework! :)
