Five For Friday

Happy Friday guys! I’m starting something new today, and whether we continue it down the road depends on how you participate ;) I’m going to ask you 5 questions and your mission is to answer them as truthfully as you can. Deal? Let’s go!

J. Money’s Five for Friday:

  1. What was the last thing you bought?
  2. How much did it cost?
  3. How much do you have in your Emergency Fund right now? (2 points off if you don’t have one!)
  4. How much will you spend this Easter Weekend?
  5. How many pairs of underpants do you own?
  6. *EXTRA CREDIT: What seat should you take?

Here, I’ll go first:

  1. Beer. Particularly: Three 6 packs and a bottle of wine. Oh, and a super-sized slim jim :)
  2. $40.80
  3. $9,276.12 (down from $10k, booooo…)
  4. Hmm…. going to two Easter dinners, so we’ll be traveling around a few states all weekend long. Probably $50 in gas, $10 in a bottle of wine, and maybe $20 in Easter gifts for the mother (so, $80 total?). Its us kids’ job to fill a HUGE Easter basket full of love and goodies for our mom, cuz she did it for us over 20+ years :) In fact, she still makes us baskets! haha… and you know what else? We still do Easter egg hunts! haha…. we say it’s for the little ones, but honestly we love it just as much…. I’m gonna stop talking now.
  5. Dang it… now I gotta go upstairs and check (who made up these questions?). Okay, it seems I’ve got about 20 pairs of boxers in my drawers, plus the ones in the laundry and the one I’m wearing. So, maybe 25? I like to be prepared.
  6. *EXTRA CREDIT: Always the back!!! All the cool people know that!

Okay, your turn. Answer them below in the comments, or post ’em up on your own blog if you’re a PF blogger yourself. But you must post the video or you’re disqualified ;) Readyy? Seeeettt? Answer!

    5. nor counting, at least 20
    6. On a plane, window toward the front; On a bus, aisle in the middle, in a car, front passenger

    6. I always liked to sit in the back in class. Not because I didn’t care or wanted to sleep…I just liked to be able to observe all of my classmates.

    3. I do have an Emergency Fund. Unfortunately it only has a few dollars at the moment. I know, I know, my Emergency Fund is just as important as reducing debt, but it just has not happened yet.
    4. I will spend nothing this Easter Weekend as I have plenty of time to do AFTER-Easter shopping for the children (my fiance’s 2 children, and my 2 nieces) I will (thankfully) see AFTER-Easter. Plus, we spent nothing on the Easter egg and craft-making with my fiance’s 2 kids last weekend!

    5. I have enough to get through several weeks without doing laundry.
extra Credit: Short flight…window to maximize sleeping. Long flight…isle so I can get up and stretch my legs. Car…I always get stuck in the middle, but I prefer to drive or be in the front.

    2) $15. Marked down from $30.

    3) $26,123.08. And I’m quite proud of that fact.

    4) $0. I’ve got a full tank of gas and I already purchased what I needed to bring for the potluck. Plus, I bought all the stuff for my son’s Easter basket last year on clearance after Easter, so I just need to toss in the chocolate bunny and we’re good to go.

    5) Too many to count. I’ve been pregnant for 18 of the last 32 months and as a result I’ve got like 4 different sizes of everything in my wardrobe right now. Including underwear. Just another reason I’ll be glad to take a break from the baby-making when our little one makes his appearance into the world in a couple weeks.

    6) Shotgun! By far, my favorite!

  36. Laura in ATL April 22, 2011 at 1:43 PM

    5. 20? I’ve never counted before…
EC: In the car? Definitely driver’s seat (I have a bad habit as a backseat driver!)

  38. J. Money April 22, 2011 at 2:09 PM

I like how now all the answers for “last thing I bought” is food, haha… started out with shopping stuff in the morning (from day before) and interesting to see how it changes as the hours progress :) This is fun to watch so far though, keep ’em coming!!

@Meredith – FOUR pairs? OMG I’d go crazy with that amount of laundrey runs… I don’t know how you do it!
@rainbowfish – $33k? That is AMAZE-BALLS! (as said like Gweneth Paltrow (GLee anyone?))
@Karen – Ouch. Be sure to have a video camera ready for your kid’s antics once he’s medicated up! ;)
@Emily – Don’t hate! Rebecca Black is the next best thing!!!! (lies, lies….)
@Jennifer – Haha… about 20% of my boxers has holes too, but they’re just so damn comfy!
    @Kadye – I like the “.01” haha…. interest?
@dee dee – How can we hate on that? You are SAVING it instead of blowing it!!! (Or did you already blow a few hundred thous? Haha… then it’ll be time to hate ;))
@Dani @ Ok, Dani – WOW. You did get a LOT of stuff, but still – wow. Never dropped that much in one sitting ever. And I bet your 50 pairs of underroos cost about $1k too ;) haha…
@Leslie – Hey, gotta do whatever makes you FEEL good! I’m usually a “more in savings” than “less in debt” kinda guy, but I’ve also never had much debt before other than Mortgage so not sure how I’d feel about it then. Rock it out!
@Slackerjo – They still sell pencils? ;) AND Heck yeah that’s a better version of Black’s song!!! hahaa.. omg they crack me up. Nice find.
@Sandy X – I like that “keep the change” stuff, GREAT idea.
@Katie – Congrats on the little one growing in your belly!!! $15k is so GOOD!

    1. Ironically, new underpants :-) I think I had an invasion by the underpants gnomes this month.
    2. Less than $25-ish
    3. About $8K, but soon to be less thanx to a problem with my paycheck. But that’s what its for, right?

    2) About $15 (I used a 25% off coupon)
    3) We had to use it, so now we’re rebuilding it… only $285 so far :S
    4) Under $10 for ingredients to make something I’m bringing to a family dinner
    5) I don’t know. At least a couple weeks’ worth
    6) Whatever’s open. I prefer something close to an aisle and potentially an exit, depending on the situation.

  44. Miss Molls April 22, 2011 at 3:24 PM

    1. A neck pillow – those U-shape kind for travelling.
    2. $14.99
    3. $3168.06
    4. Around $40.00 – I’m going out tonight to celebrate my friend’s birthday.
    5. No idea — 20 maybe?? I think I can go about 3 weeks without doing laundry before I run out – haha.
    6. This video is hilarious! Front seat definitely so I can control the radio and change this ridiculous song!

  45. Christopher J April 22, 2011 at 4:01 PM

    1. Tex-Mex lunch for two.
    2. $25.96 (including $5 tip)

    2. $7.55
    3. ~$8
    4. Meh I already did grocery shopping for the seder I’m hosting tonight but there will probably be a last minute run for a couple extra items. Maybe $20 tops?
    5. Way too much. Twenty pairs?
    6. Hm definitely the back seat because it’s where the party is. Yeah!

  47. Misha April 22, 2011 at 4:18 PM

    Oop my bad it’s not $8, it’s $8k

  48. Jess (of the formerly blue hair) April 22, 2011 at 4:51 PM

    1. A new headlight bulb for my minivan
    2. ~$11
    3. ~$4000
    4. Probably ~$50? I haven’t figured out what I’m doing this weekend yet, so it’s hard to predict.
    5. Not enough– maybe this weekend can be underwear shopping! So much fun ;p
    6. Back seat, duh!

  49. Sarah April 22, 2011 at 5:02 PM

    This is fun!!

    1. Frozen yogurt! Om noms!
    2. A whopping $3.22 (toppings are my weakness)
    3. $1900 (working my way up to 5K)
    4. My dad’s coming to town tomorrow, and it’s his birthday so I’ll probably treat him to something ($40), plus I’m paying for a retreat in May ($106), I’m also treating another friend to an acai bowl for her birthday ($13) and I need to go grocery shopping so probably another $40. Total = $201. OUCH.
    5. How many pairs of underpants do you own? Oh geez. 21+?
    6. *EXTRA CREDIT: What seat should you take? front seat…duh

  50. Kitchen Penguin April 22, 2011 at 5:48 PM

    Happy aloha Friday J$

    1) Groceries (my life is so glamorous).
    2) $64.50 I went to Safeway to buy 99¢ pineapples and BOGO strawberries and found a coupon on the ground for $10 off my next $50 purchase so I ended up restocking the pantry with sale items. Savings of $46.34.
    3) $14k including the super emergency fund, normally the “future car fund.”
    4) At least $100. Oil change, church donation & Easter dinner.
    5) I’m guessing 30+ because I can, theoretically, go a month without doing laundry.
    6) First class with a free upgrade; the only way to fly. ;-)

  51. Brian April 22, 2011 at 5:50 PM

    1. A cup of coffee
    2. $3.46
    3. $11,703.76 (still have some debt, but we’re moving to a city 2500 miles away in May, want to be sure we can cover any unexpected expenses)
    4. $0.00 (i’m at a school for my job and all expenses food, lodging are covered, no need to spend any money)
    5. 10-12
    6. *EXTRA CREDIT: Driver’s seat, always! I absolutely can not stand being a passenger.

  52. Jenicka April 22, 2011 at 6:04 PM

    This is fun!

    1. Full tank of gas and some lottery tickets
    2. $ 40.00 for the tank of gas, and $ 10.00 for the lottery tickets
    3. About $60,000. We are saving up for a down payment on a new house.
    4. Maybe $60? We are going out to brunch and will have some wine with our food.
    5. At least 25
    6. My hubbie loves to drive, so I am always in the seat next to him!

  53. SouthCountyGirl April 22, 2011 at 6:12 PM

I re-posted it on my blog, but here are my answers:

1 Lets see, the last thing I bought was one of the Canvas picture for my mom for mother’s day. The 8×10 was free and all I paid was for shipping.

    2 $14.95 for shipping

    3 Emergency Fund: $8,982.67 Goal: $11,000.00

4 Easter spending… Nada. Just normal groceries since we are budgeting for the
wedding and have decided to forgo the bunny’s and baskets this year.

    5 oh man… Tons… and I’m getting 7 more for my birthday

6 Second to back row, far side… Your not getting called on and not marked as the Goof off who’s sleeping in the back, but its still easy to slip out and stay unnoticed.

  54. Erik April 22, 2011 at 7:43 PM

    1. Taco Salad which I am currently regretting
    2. $9
    3. $2800

    6. Driver’s seat

  55. Cat April 22, 2011 at 7:48 PM

    2. Salmon and the drinks and the app… about 50 dollars
    3. about 900 dollars
    4. Hopefully no more than 50 dollars because I will go out for drinks today, and visit the family on easter
    5. 74 pairs. Plus whats in the laundry… All in fun colors. I could go 2 months without doing laundry..
    *The drivers seat.

  56. Emily April 22, 2011 at 10:58 PM

HA! I just realized I totally messed up the numbers and skipped #5.

Answer: Too many. I could probably last for a REALLY long time.

  57. michelle April 23, 2011 at 12:45 AM

    3 $420.38
4 $0 for easter; ~$75 for weekly groceries, yoga and clothes shopping
5 good gravy! uh let’s just say i only have to do laundry every two months…
    bonus on the left

  58. Jenn April 23, 2011 at 11:02 AM

    1. Roundtrip airline tickets for DH and I to go to Europe this summer. SO excited.:)
    2. About $2500. Yeah, not cheap. We ordered tickets into one city and leaving from another two weeks later that should work great for our itinerary, though.
    3. $21,500 (includes general efund and efund for cars. We have a house downpayment fund too that could be used for emergencies if needed..)
    4. Probably around $30 for gas and $70 for groceries.
    5. Front passenger seat in the car, window seat in airplanes.

  59. Investing Newbie April 23, 2011 at 1:05 PM

1.Technically, a Bud Light. Generally speaking, dinner and drinks for three.
2.The Bud was $5. The total dinner/drinks package ran me around 120
    3.About $9,500.
4.Studying for my Accounting Final and dinner with family
    5. Ooh this lady is definitely going to be discreet and just say lots.
    6. This depends on how many people are coming along. If its just one other person, the passenger. If a lot, I usually sit in the back because I’m most likely the shortest one and don’t need as much leg room.

  60. Diane April 23, 2011 at 2:22 PM

    1. Groceries for the week this AM
    2. $28.85
    3. $50K (I am self-employed)
    4. Nothing
    5. Good god, I have no idea. Lots. Probably 20? But I’m a gal. There are the basic ones; the hiking/cool-wick ones; the sexy ones; the “no underwear line” shorts-type ones. Lots.
    6. Huh? I like window seats in airplanes.

  61. JMK April 23, 2011 at 6:30 PM

    1. New roof for house and detatched garage. 40yr shingles with ice and watershield under most of it, so even with our winters we don’t plan to do this again in our lifetime.
    2. ~$18,375, but all cash. Ouch.
    3. $1000 (we never let our account drop below this). We also life on ~55% of our take home so unless we both lose our jobs simultaneously we can get by without changes on my husband’s income, and with minor alterations and cutting on mine. He was laid off 4 yrs ago and I was laid off (with months of notice) this past December. With his big severance package he didn’t bother applying for unemployement – he wouldn’t have qualified for a year. I applied and after using up the waiting period and time equivalent to my vacation payout I only received one payment before starting my new job. When you live way below your means you can easily take an emergency in stride. You have excess money every week that can cover anything you absolutely couldn’t predict. If there is no emergency that week, it goes into the retirement accounts or we make an extra payment on the mortgage. Next week, rinse and repeat.
    4. $10 for a potted flowering plant for the relative hosting Easter dinner. It’s a pot luck affair and we’re providing two veggies, but we would have made dinner at home otherwise so I’m not counting that as spending.
    5. What? I’m going to say 10, but only 5 I actually like to wear. The rest are only for times when the laundry is behind schedule.
    6. In cars I prefer to drive, on a three person sofa I want an arm to lean on. The middle seat sucks. I hate sitting at the head of the table – I feel the need to make a speech or something. Round tables are the best – no hierarchy in the seating arrangement.

  62. Morgan April 24, 2011 at 1:15 AM

    1. I rented a movie from Amazon.
    2. $2.99 I don’t watch (thus don’t pay for) TV. Heck of a lot cheaper to pay for only the screen time I’m actually going to use. My entertainment spending is about $10-12 per month.
    3. About $5K
    4. $2.99 :)
    5. About 20. It’s important to have an “emergency fund” of undies!
    6. I’m usually alone, so it’s best if I take the driver’s seat. In a classroom, meeting, movie, etc., I always take the back row so I can see everything that goes on.

  63. Sass April 24, 2011 at 9:44 AM

    1. Groceries — and I’m not typing out the full list!
    2. $36.70 — plus the $20 cash I got back so I could give Princess Penelope her allowance!
    3. $8653.89 — and yes, I could just about wipe out my debt with that cash, but as a single parent, I feel the need to have some in reserve. Besides, I think I NEED to get in the habit of being more frugal and the arduous task of paying this all off is hopefully developing the better habits.
    4. Approximately $100
    5. A drawerful!
    6. I prefer to drive — other people drive like crap! ha!

  64. J. Money April 24, 2011 at 7:50 PM

@Diane – Yeah, us guys pretty much have only two types: boxers & tighty whities. haha…
@JMK – WOAH!!! You most certainly win the prize for the most spent last! Jeeesh, haha… didn’t see that one coming :) Glad it’s a 1-time thing though, and crazy awesome you spent in pure cash! Very very impressive.
@Morgan – haha, indeed. emergency fund of undies is always smart ;)
@Sass – I’m with you on that too – much prefer to have more cash in the bank than less debt. Feels much safer to me :)

  65. Steph April 25, 2011 at 9:39 AM

    1. Two tacos and an odwalla
    2. $12.50, damn airport prices!
    3. Ugh, around $500 and its really just a savings account. Still trying to get out of the red, check out my horrible blunders and slow rise to victory at budgetssuck(dot)com
    4. I spent about a dollar on jelly beans and eggs at toys r us to give to people, yay cheap stuff!
    5. Upper 20s maybe 30s
    6. Aisle seat. I fly a lot and have long legs

  67. Jenna, Adaptu Community Manager April 25, 2011 at 1:29 PM

@J$ – But it’s the best gellato in PDX! SOOOO worth it! Chile Chocolate and Saffron, you can’t go wrong!

  68. J. Money April 27, 2011 at 12:22 AM

@Steph – Hey, never too late! We’ll do another one soon too :)
@fifi – haha… had a lot of jelly beans too this weekend, for free tho ;)
@Jenna, Adaptu Community Manager – I bet!!! Airport stuff is crazy expensive… never been to PDX yet but hoping to one day :)

  69. Jenna, Adaptu Community Manager April 27, 2011 at 5:28 PM

@J$ – You should definitely make a trip up to PDX! Totally worth it (even if you don’t get gelato!)
