New $100 Bill Dropped in Circulation Today!

It’s been a few years since the bill was first announced (the treasury was having some issues with it), but now the newly designed $100 bills as shown above will be going into circulation today… With all it’s sexy security updates and all :) Which include:

  • Portrait watermark
  • Security thread
  • Color-Shifting 100
  • Raised printing
  • Gold 100
  • Microprinting

So don’t any of you ballers get any funny ideas! It’s not as easy to fake these like those racketeer coins we were talking about yesterday ;) If any of you come across these in the real world now though, please let us know! It’s always fun seeing new currency in circulation… And I hear if you can find serial #1 you may be able to make some dough off it!

“I would wager a guess that [the number one] note will bring between $10,000 and $20,000 in uncirculated (mint) condition,” said independent dealer Scott Lindquist.

That’s pretty crazy… Here’s what the last two $100 bills looked like for comparison btw:

old 100 bill

previous 100 bill

Personally I prefer the old school design a lot more, but I suppose you’ve gotta keep up with the times… If you want to learn more about these new guys, here’s the official website on ’em: http://www.newmoney.gov/

I would like to be in the business of designing money. I wonder how much that gig pays.

Enough to do it for a living :) I would imagine they’d have to do coins too and/or go overseas as well cuz man the US *rarely* changes its bills. Not that I’m complaining, I kinda wish we’d revert and get all old school up in here… Let all the other countries go crazy and colorful ;)

It is always fun to get the new bills then try to convince people that don’t know that they aren’t fake. It is easier to do with 20’s 10’s and 5’s though. I don’t ever carry C notes :)

You still hear people to this day getting denied when they try to use a $2.00 bill or 50 cent piece :) I use one every few weeks ($2.00 bill – trying to offload my stash), and usually the next thing out of their mouths after “wow, cool!” is “Do these still work??” haha… Yup, they sure do.

Ever try paying for something with a $2 dollar bill? You need to do some convincing with them. :)

Hey! Read my comment above ;)

I’m with you J., the old design is way better! I especially love 19th century currency.

    1. J. Money October 8, 2013 at 10:56 AM

How awesome would it be if we reverted back to what we were using 100 years ago?? :) The only sucky part is security now cuz of all the damn scammers out there… people are always f’ing it up for others.

      1. David Hunter October 9, 2013 at 12:27 AM

It’d be super awesome to go old school!

All the awesome new security features and designs aside, I hate new bills! I work for a bank and new bills always stick to each other, so there’s always the chance that we’ll give one too many to a customer. But I guess that’s good for customers who don’t want to be honest…haha.

    1. J. Money October 8, 2013 at 10:58 AM

Sweet! You work for a bank??? Do you ever find cool old bills or coins come in?? It’s on my list of jobs to try out one day cuz I LOOOOOVE the idea of someone bringing in old currency for me to add to my collection, haha… that ever happen to you? I bet you see all kinds of awesome and not-so-awesome stuff come in. Money is so dirty.

      1. Ben @ The Wealth Gospel October 8, 2013 at 12:51 PM

Dude, money is disgusting. I’ve had some pretty bad, close to throwing up, experiences. I don’t see too many old stuff, but I’ve seen a LOT of cool foreign coins that people try to put through the coin machine we have. I got an old Deutsche Mark penny a few weeks back, which was awesome because a) it’s no longer in circulation and b) I lived in Germany for a couple of years.

        1. J. Money October 9, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Nice! I usually find some fakers in my rolls from the bank I sort through too. Once I found like 3 different foreign coins in the *same* nickel roll, haha… And at the same bank that once gave me a guardian angel coin instead of a Sacagawea $1.00 one! Though that one is happily sitting in my coin collection cuz I thought it was pretty cool :) Especially after that Sunday’s sermon at church was all about guardian angels – pretty crazy.

That’s pretty sweet. We get all our rolls from the fed, so there probably aren’t any random ones in them, but the branch I work at is literally in the Walmart home office parking lot, so all the execs who go overseas always bring something in with the rest of their American coins. It’s hard to pick them out sometimes when there’s so much going through the machine.

              JEALOUS!!!

  6. Mom @ Three is Plenty October 8, 2013 at 9:54 AM

I like seeing the new designs and how they copy other country’s security design features. More color is one of those that I’ve seen all over the world – except the US… Now to wait until we get the funky cellophane (?) windows that Australian currency has…

    1. J. Money October 8, 2013 at 10:59 AM

The plastic-y ones, right? I think Mexico uses them too… I have a few bills and you can’t even rip them if you tried, it’s weird. And also very colorful, yes :)

  7. Cat @ Budget Blonde October 8, 2013 at 9:57 AM

Fancy!! I loved reading that post about the serial numbers – don’t remember whose blog it was but I read it yesterday. I’m going to be examining all my bills like crazy!

    1. J. Money October 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Yeah, I ALWAYS forget to look at the #’s on the bills I get in change, but it’s a good reminder to do so :) Some of us collectors are pretty hardcore and would rather have a rare bill/coin than a house, haha… They’ve been known to go into the millions :)

  8. a terrible husband... October 8, 2013 at 10:21 AM

I’m so horrible (terrible?) with new $100s when they come out. I keep part of my emergency fund in $100s and for some reason I can’t stand when they’re the old bills… now I gotsta go hunting for “new dallas” to replace the older ones.

    Yes, I have a problem.

    1. J. Money October 8, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Yes, you do :) If you’re sitting on old bills like 40-50+ old you better get them checked out too cuz they may be well worth MORE than just $100 a piece!

  9. Jayon October 8, 2013 at 12:47 PM

They look foreign to me. Kinda looks like the first half doesn’t match the second half. Im not a fan of the design, but I might change my mind when I have it in hand.

  10. Micro October 8, 2013 at 7:27 PM

I think we should just go with $100 coin, try counterfeiting that. I’m kidding of course, I really don’t like getting coins, ever. I actually don’t even use paper currency if I can avoid it. Can I just start making payments via retina scan? I would go with a fingerprint but those can be lifted. It’s a little harder to scoop out my eyeball.

    1. J. Money October 9, 2013 at 10:36 PM

I bet if we fast forward 20-30 years we’ll be doing some of that stuff ;)

  11. Christine @ ThePursuitofGreen October 8, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Now I need to get my hands on a new crisp $100 bill! It’s a bit tempting to frame it and hang it up now. Makes a bit more of an impact than framing a dollar bill right? Then again it’s just asking for someone to take it.

  12. Marissa@Thirtysixmonths October 11, 2013 at 10:50 AM

This is so cool! The younger generations usually can be convinced that old bills are fake while those who recognize them will be completely amazed.
