If there was one site I rarely looked at, it was FMyLife.com. There was just nothing about it that I found entertaining at all (it’s so depressing!), and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why other people would either. That was, until I came across their “money” section ;) For the first time since that crazy site came out, I found myself dying with laughter over here! It’s so freakin’ funny! And there’s no possible way any of that stuff can be true, right? It’s too ridiculous to be real!
But it reminded me of how INCREDIBLE we as people can overcome some of these financial tragedies of our lives, though (the true parts ;)). Yes we bitch and moan and feel completely stupid for days on end for being so moronic, but at some point throughout the process we decide to lighten up a bit and start poking fun at ourselves. And that’s just awesome. Our ability to get back out there and dust our shoulders off to live another day is great. We all make mistakes, but it’s those who can overcome them and continue pushing forward with their hopes and dreams that succeed in the end. And making light of a situation helps you get through it that much faster!
So today I lift my self-imposed ban on the site (at least the money section), and officially declare it Make Fun Of Yourself day! Where I challenge you to poke fun at yourself for all the stupid money slips you’ve done recently, and then create your OWN “F My Life” story! You can even exaggerate if you’d like, no one will ever know ;)
Here are a few of ideas from FML’s site to get you started… These continue to crack me up!
- Today, I went to the gas station, paid the clerk, and drove off without pumping any gas. FML
- Today, I received a ticket for not having my headlights on. The cop who pulled me over had a broken headlight. FML.
- Today, a little girl I give horse-riding lessons to told me she had saved up $8.00 for her own pony. I laughed and thought how cute she was, then realized that was more than I have in my own savings account. FML
- Today, I got a parking ticket for parking in my neighbors’ parking spot. I parked there because my neighbors were parked in my parking spot. FML
- Today, after my credit card was stolen, the thief made donations to charitable associations. Now I feel bad for asking for the money back. FML
- Today, I was bitched out by a pizza delivery man. I didn’t have the cash to pay him for a pizza I didn’t even order. FML
And here’s my own FML for the day:
“Last night my pregnant wife was craving sparkling cider, so I went out and bought her some as the stores were closing, only to come home and realize it contained alcohol. FML”
Not as good as some of those above, but it’s at least true ;) And now I have to drink that nonsense myself or I waste $10 bucks! (Anyone want to come over and help me? Haha…). Your turn! I now give you full permission to bitch and make fun of yourself :) Hurry up and get it out of your system so you can get back to rockin’ it again! What kinda stuff have you messed up lately?

Last night, on my way home from work, I decided to get a car wash since the temperature was above freezing and the roads were dry. I went to the gas station to fill my tank and purchase a wash ticket for the touchless wash. After pumping my tank full, I then realized that the station I was at didn’t even have a car wash. FML
Wow that’s stupid about the parking! Love this post by the way!
@Kim @ Say What?! – Hahahaah… why the heck did they sell them there then?? Haha… that is so strange. Great one though ;)
@Michelle – Glad you liked! Tried to spice it up a bit today :)
While deployed to Iraq I spent thousands of dollars buying RYL (Ryland residential home builder) without a complete understanding of the ridiculousness of the housing market happening in the States. The housing boom sounded great from the articles I was reading online. We all know what happened next. Of course I doubled down twice as the stock dropped and ended up having 40% of my portfolio in one dying equity. Gotta get over the sunk cost bias and stop putting good money on top of bad money.
Got home from a business trip yesterday. Traffic was backed up on my usual route home. Decided to be a genius and detour on a toll road. Got home in record time then realized I didn’t even hang my tolltag. Fines on the way! FML.
Gotta love those cravings…but sparkling cider with no alcohol. Nope doesn’t sound good to me…
My latest dopeyness was not cancelling some internet services I no longer need/use. For months those credit card charges were automatically made before I got off my ass and cancelled.
Not a money FML but a “while making money” FML.
I was bartending at one of the busiest bars in Boston during grad school. It was Saturday night at 9:30 and it was starting to get SWAMPED. Somehow I split my pants right down the crack of my a$$ (yes, from the belt all the way down and around to the bottom.) Too late and busy to leave (and the only “extra” clothes were spandex from the 100 lb women bartending next to me.) So I bartended the entire night with a little extra a/c around the back… On the bright side, I made really good tips :) I played it up a bit by putting a “new pants fund” jar on the bar… Maybe that pointed it out to some who wouldn’t have noticed, but it’s all good. F…M…L…
…I once allowed myself to buy a penny stock. Only $100 worth, but I still can’t believe I did it. Stupid stupid stupid!!
On Tuesday, I turned off all the lights in my house before leaving to not waste electricity. Then I went to the dentist and found out I need $8,000 worth of dental work. FML.
I sent a $9000+ check to NJ instead of AZ, because the companies names were so close and both companies were on the same bill. I am also lucky enough to get the old bookkeepers phone number, and since everything sat for at least 3 months during the merger with the new company, I get daily calls of people wanting money. FML
I always have library fines and forget to take all of my change from the Tesco automatic self-checkout machines… fortunately, I’ve only lost about £25 this year for those two reasons, but still, it’s frustrating because it’s my own fault. This is why I have an ‘oops’ column in my spending spreadsheet :/.
I once bought a penny stock at $0.08/share. Current value 0.009. Lesson learned.
I got all gung ho about switching banks from [insert evil bank name here] until i went in and saw the depressing facts:
1. I have a ton of autopays and automatic transfers that would be a huge hassle to change over
2. I have 2 business accounts that receive vendor payments & rents (and have a bunch of automatic payments set up as well)
I would have to set up all these ACH things, autopays, etc. with the new bank. Last time I did it I missed a few and got nasty-grams a month later.
I want to switch. I really, really do but the pain of switching simply wins out this time.
Maybe I’ll do it next week when I’m not so damn busy…
We were on our way using a budget airline and feeling very pleased wi ourselves for getting cheap flights. Then we had two suitcases that were 2 kg heavier than the allowance each which costs us over $60. Dopey or what?
Here’s another one:
I sent 4 checks out without a signature. I know one day I will laugh at this, but so far I still just feel stupid. FML
I promised to donate $1 to J$, I came looking for a new ‘Donate’ page, and I couldn’t find it. FML!
I took out student loans to go to law school. I might as well have earned an MFA in Theatre.
Today I spilt a drink on myself, cut my finger, and realized that I forgot my lunch at home in the fridge…all before 9 am. FML!
GREAT ones guys!! I know I shouldn’t be laughing, but some are hilarious ;)
@Chris Barber – Damn, that does suck. If it makes you feel better we bought our house at the peak of the market too ;) Lost a quick $60-$100k right from the get go.
@BE @ BusyExecutiveMoneyBlog – Oh no!!! That def. sucks, dang.
@Dr Dean – Haha, maybe you just wanted to support them in this bad economy of ours? ;)
@Nick – OMG that is awesome!! Smart play w/ the “new pants fund” too – that way it seems like it’s on purpose and adds to the awesomeness of the bar scene ;) I still REALLY really want to be a bartender one day, I’ll have to get the secrets from you first.
@Leah – Haha, I think most beginners like to do that ;) You could have gotten lucky though!
@Jennifer Lissette – OUCH. It’s a good thing you started saving some energy pennies! :)
@LB – Oh jeez… it still hasn’t been settled?
@BrokeElizabeth – Awwww, haha… that’s pretty cute though :)
@HP – That’ll do it!
@WR – Yeah those transfers suck ass man, but if you can suck it up and do it soon you’d be SO MUCH HAPPIER afterward! Esp if that evil bank is Bank of America (and I’m 99% sure it is cuz I don’t know anyone that likes them :))
@Maria@moneyprinciplet – Oh that def. blows. You couldn’t unload something or put in your purse/etc in order to avoid the fee? Either way hope you’re now better with it in the future :)
@LB – Hahhaa… I’ve done that before too. Only with one, not four ;) Hope they weren’t big ones!
@PK – HAH! Serves me right ;)
@KimmyQ – Wait, why? You didn’t finish? Or you’re switching? I don’t think student loans are a bad thing in itself :(
@Kristina – Ouch. Hope you brought your purse at least so you can eat ;) The worst is when you forget that too, and have to bum money off people… I’ve done that on multiple occasions ;)
Haha, that one about the credit card being stolen, the thief making charitable donations, and the victim having to ask for the money back is pretty funny. I’d feel silly, too, having to ask for the money back.
I wonder if he/she did it on purpose or something so it wouldn’t be reported? ;) ORRRRR maybe the thief FELT really bad afterward, and decided that was away to help him repent a bit? Haha… though still stealing…
I’m sad I came to this post late. I once tripped up (!) the stairs at the subway station near my work in front of an entire crowd of morning commuters. I was beet-red for the rest of the day.
Ouch! At least you didn’t hurt yourself much it seems :) That would make it a TON more worse, haha… thx for stopping by bro – these are always interesting to read ;)
