Hey guys!
In my continued mission this year to share kick-ass services I come across from blogging, I happily bring you yet another one I think you your wallet is really going to like :)
It’s called Honey, and it does this:
“Honey magically scours the Internet for ANY coupon that is active for the website you’re shopping on. During checkout, just click the Honey button and we’ll automatically apply the best coupon to save you the MOST money.”
How simple is that? It’s not an app or even a web app, but rather a browser extension.
You download it right off the site, and seconds later it’ll show up in the upper right corner of your web browser as a little “h” icon –> . Like this:
It works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera, and has over 1,300 Google Reviews rating it 4 and 1/2 stars. Why I’m just learning about it now, I don’t know, but they’ve been around for over 2 years now an I’m officially its newest user :)
In fact, this makes the perfect companion piece to all those other services we’re using! A financial nerd’s wet dream – hah.
- Honey will save me money before I buy something
- And then Acorns will round up the purchase to the nearest dollar and invest the difference!
And of course, we also have Digit humming along in the background xfering over small chunks of money into my savings account automatically too. Technology is awesome, isn’t it?
So to recap…
Pros of using Honey:
- It’s free!
- Takes seconds to download
- It’s automatic (though you do have to click to apply the coupon)
- It saves you money!
Cons of using Honey:
- It doesn’t work on all browsers yet, like Internet Explorer
- It doesn’t work with all online stores yet (UPDATE: It now works with Amazon – wooooo!!!!)
- It doesn’t work on mobile – just desktop
- If you don’t spend a lot of money online, you won’t save a lot of money
And unfortunately/fortunately, that last one is exactly why I can’t tell you how much I’ve saved so far since I don’t spend much anymore :) I’ll see if I can give you an update on that dynamic duo later once it’s been humming for a while. If you’re already spending online, you might as well get stuff cheaper, eh?
So that’s Honey in a nutshell :)

It worked for me on amazon.ca a few weeks ago. Also worked on Rockler last night. I was using Chrome both times if that helps. Super useful extension as it costs nothing and requires no effort.
Nice! Good to see it works in the real world like that. Thx for letting us know :)
Never heard of Honey, need to check them out. Even if you are a casual shopper online who doesn’t like to save money?
Nice, something I always do manually can now be automated. You have to love technology. It is a cat and mouse game between shoppers and retailers.
Right? I NEVER buy anything without checking for a coupon first online. You don’t always get lucky, but most times you do :)
Gotta love brands that aren’t afraid to be funny :) I really like the idea of Honey but I think I’m in the same boat with you.. I just don’t spend enough to make it super useful for me. Hopefully it’ll come through when I need it though! Thanks for sharing more fun tools, J.
Watch it helps us save like $100 on the one transaction we do online, haha… Hope to see you again at FinCon, my friend :)
Cool app, will have to sign up and check it out.
Thank you for all the smart info you send our way in an effort to save us money!
I have a question about the “honey” browser extension. Is it different/better than ebates? Can they work in tandem? I use the ebates icon, but not sure if I could use both. It would be awesome if we could!
Thank you-
Becky
Becky – At the moment, they can work in tandem. You can use Honey to search for coupons during the checkout process, but then you’ll want to activate your cashback through Ebates at the very end of the process.
Thanks!
Don’t forget to start out from ebates.com or Mr. Rebates for cash back on the items you purchase… pretty soon they’ll be paying us for shopping! ;)
Hah – that would be nice!
May I just interject and say…nothing works on Internet Explorer anymore. ;)
Good one :)
Interesting app. I can’t believe how many new ones are coming out all the time to help people save money. Maybe PF is taking the world by storm :)
Right? It’s a beautiful new age we live in!
And here I thought you’d be teaching me how to make my own bee colony. :) I think this extension has greater power to save me money.
I don’t see any downsides. Unless it slows down the browser much. Chrome is already a RAM hog as it is..
Sounds a lot like Ebates to me; I’ve got its extension installed. Possible coupons before, cash back after :)
Gotta rock it all and compound that savings!
You’re like an automation superstar now, and that’s the key to real success. Systems, systems, systems.
Only since earlier this year! I made it a point in Jan to actually go out of my way and see what the fuss is about with the new $$$ companies coming out. Pretty glad I did :)
I don’t shop much these days, but when I do I like to save! Excited to try this out!!
Let me know what you save!
Love it when things save me time. So far I haven’t had too much luck with Paribus. Seems to have trouble with tracking my online purchases…but I don’t buy much online anyhow. But Honey…that will save time since I always search online for a code.
Good to test them out and then kill the ones that don’t work and stick to those which do :)
So happy to see the July 6th post was not your last :-)
You Rock, J Money!!
Hehe me too! It means I’m still alive and breathing – can’t want more than that :)
This is cool and it does work, I have tried it myself and no complains :)
Awesome! thx for letting us know.
Hey J. Your like the Indiana jones of personal finance. You keep finding all these cool PF tools. Gotta check them out. Thanks’,
hahahaa…. I’m always searching for that treasure, that’s for sure :)
Haven’t heard of it! Can’t wait to check it out though. I had a company call me to offer a beta testing program for a company they are starting that actually uses your GPS location and shows you coupons to places around you. Then it automatically reminds you every so often when it’s time to get a haircut or get your oil changed and it shows coupons for that as well. Saving is getting smarter and smarter!
Yeah it is! That GPS stuff has been around for a while now actually, just never seemed to have caught on all the way yet. I’m sure someone will crack it though :)
Added. Looking forward to trying this out!
if you save a lot, I want a beer next time we meet up :)
I love free services that save me time and money! I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the tip!
