The Blog Directory is Finally Here :)

Whelp guys, after 9 years of dreaming about this thing, 5 years of thinking I should probably do something about it, and then 3 months of actually *taking action* on it, I’m proud to announce that our industry’s very first blog directory is now live.

You can check it out here :) –> RockstarDirectory.org

We started only adding up the expected stuff like blogger name, website, category, and popular social channels, but over the months we kept adding more and more to it, and eventually we came out with a full-blown database where you can not only find blogs much faster and easier, but can also drill down and find all sorts of other juicy demographics too.

Such as:

  • The sex of the blogger
  • The age of the blogger
  • Their race (!)
  • The financial stage they’re in (do they have dual income households? single income? retired?)
  • If they have kids or not
  • Their net worth!
  • The city/state/country of where they live
  • And most recently added, their main *profession*

Now not everyone was comfortable disclosing all of this info, and that’s of course fine (we asked everyone to submit their own data to get the most accurate results) but out of the 680+ bloggers we are tracking, I’d say a good majority of them spilled all the beans :) And the data is so fascinating!!!

I put on my statistician hat for a few minutes the other day to get a quick lay of the land (and that’s all it literally took – a few minutes – because it’s all open and easily accessed!), and here were some of my findings:

  • 56% of the bloggers are male (36% are female and 8% are teams)
  • 49% of bloggers are in their 30s (21% are in their 20s, 17% in 40s and 8% in their 50s & 60s)
  • Of those who disclosed their race, 82% are white, 9% are Asian, 4% are African American, and 3% are Hispanic or Latin
  • 37% of all bloggers have kids (of which 54% of households have dual incomes, and 46% single)
  • 34% of all bloggers are DINKs (Dual Income No Kids) and 21% SINKs (Single Income No Kids)
  • 4% of all bloggers tracked are RETIRED :)
  • 23% of them (154) publicly disclose their net worths (ranging from -$532,304 to +$5,000,000)
  • We’re blogging from 6 of the 7 total continents
  • We span 20 different countries, including Romania, Guatemala, South Africa and Israel!
  • The most commonly held profession so far are those in IT, followed by Engineers – not as many financially-related jobs as you’d think?
  • And we have at least one blogger who is an opera singer, flight attendant, model, physicist, patent examiner, nuclear contractor, firefighter (2, actually!), librarian, and costume designer.

If you know any financial bloggers in Antarctica or any of the other 176 countries, please do send them our way :)

Here’s a screenshot of the home page:

money blog directory

We were about to launch this puppy after aggregating all that data, but then we thought – why not soup up all our older Best Blogs list and Net Worth Tracker, and even merge over our original PF Directory resources too? If we’re trying to make this a go-to place for anything financial online, why not smash it all together?

So we did.

And here are the direct links to some of these new pages (also found in the main nav bar):

We have a list a mile-long of other things we’re already working on adding to it (podcasts are next, as well as those blogs that have gone inactive and those that have died out so we can start compiling a solid archives), but figured it was finally time to stop building and get this thing out to the world. It does no good if no one knows it exists, right?

So please check it out, poke around, send me any feedback or requests/problems you find with it (I’m sure there’s a few), and then please please PLEASE pass it around!

I want this to help as many people in our community as possible, and the more friends sharing it the better shot of making that happen :)

I’ve already gotten some pretty cool notes about physical meet-ups now being formed in local cities, as well as other related bloggers connecting and never knowing each other existed, and it’s effects like this that remind me why I turned down that million dollar deal the other month. To think none of these projects would have seen the light of day had I just given up on my visions KILLS me!

We now have a thriving forum of over 700 people chatting about money and entrepreneurship/ blogging, a charity and cool #GivingCards project that’s done almost $4,000 of good in only two months, a handful of new Original Series over on Rockstar Finance, and now this robust Directory.

5 years of doing the same thing over and over again to now launching 4 major endeavors in the past 4 *months*. Pretty wild…

I’m exhausted as hell, but man do I feel alive :) And now it’s time to hit pause and focus all our energy on making these projects the best they can be for our community. Every single thing we’ve built was with *you guys* at the core of it, and I really hope it helps everyone out.

Thank you for always following along and encouraging me, and a special thanks to Steve Adcock from ThinkSaveRetire.com who single-handedly built the infrastructure for this Directory himself, and to my long-time friend, and philanthropy partner, Nate St. Pierre for continuously pushing me to think bigger.

Any questions/concerns/ideas, drop them in the comments below as always :)

PS: If you end up doing anything cool with this data, please let me know!! I want to see all the interesting ways our community uses it!!

I know you’ve been busy J$ and you’ve done amazing work here! We all owe you a debt of gratitude. Thanks and keep up the great work building on this special community we have.

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 6:33 AM

oh man – this community completely changed my life all those years ago, so any time I can do something that adds value to it I’m going to try! I’ve never felt so much “at home” before as I do here with y’all. We’re so lucky to have stumbled across this world :)

  2. Smart Provisions February 15, 2017 at 6:42 AM

Great job with the directory, J$! The design looks great and I haven’t seen any problems yet.

I think it’d be cool if you could have a RSS Feeder with the latest posts from every blog as well.

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 7:19 AM

Already in the hopper ;) Needed a little more time to work it through to make sure it’s done right.

    2. Steven Goodwin February 16, 2017 at 9:18 PM

Great idea! Then we could just dump this into Feedly and work through them as we have time! Great work J$ and Steve!

      1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 10:34 AM

Or it can just become the new Personal Finance Feedly :)

  3. Mrs. Mad Money Monster | @madmoneymonster February 15, 2017 at 6:48 AM

      Awesome! Thanks!

  4. Band of Savers February 15, 2017 at 7:15 AM

I spent some time checking it out and was rather impressed (and a bit overwhelmed) by the magnitude of it. Awesome job J. Can’t wait to see the next big idea that you have brewing but just haven’t told us about yet, with people like you there’s always something else coming.

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:52 AM

It is a lot to consume at first check-in, for sure :)

And because we know it’ll wear off and people will get tired of seeing the same blogs all the time, we just added this page up so there will always be someone new to check out ;)

J$ – This is a truly great resource! Looks like a lot of work went into it, but the results are amazing. The functionality is spot on! Thanks!

      Thanks man! Glad you approve!

  6. Go Finance Yourself! February 15, 2017 at 7:37 AM

Awesome work J$! That must of been quite the project. Thanks for taking this on. It will be a great resource for the industry!

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:49 AM

It was a lot more time consuming that we first guessed, yes :) But well worth it now!

  7. Dividend Cake February 15, 2017 at 8:01 AM

Great list and hard work ! Congrats

We see you are missing Belgium !! How sad…maybe we can make it to the list one day :-)

Keep up the great work. Look forward to follow. Thx

  8. Brian @ debt discipline February 15, 2017 at 8:10 AM

  9. Paul February 15, 2017 at 8:17 AM

I like the Austin Powers reference. Man its been a while since I’ve seen that movie

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:48 AM

I need to put a tracker on there to see how many people choose that (and how many of them are us men ;))

  10. Max Your Freedom February 15, 2017 at 8:35 AM

This is going to be a fantastic resource for both the personal finance blogging community and knowledge seekers alike. Great accomplishment J$! Thanks again!!

  11. Penny @ She Picks Up Pennies February 15, 2017 at 8:37 AM

Amazing, amazing, amazing. Between the forums and the directory, I feel like I have my spring break plans on lock ;)

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:47 AM

Not a bad way to spend it if you ask me ;)

  12. Tonya@Budget and the Beach February 15, 2017 at 9:08 AM

Thanks for including me J! I really appreciate it. I think this is such an awesome idea!

  13. MK February 15, 2017 at 9:16 AM

J, you are awesome!! I just checked out the directory and woohoo! I can sort by age! Not that I don’t think people of a different age are better/worse at advice, experiences, etc., but I find my goals & needs change with my age. It’s nice to have that option.

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:45 AM

That’s *exactly* why we added it. So we can follow those around us experiencing certain life events, and then when we want even more wiser advice we go a decade or two older, and when we want to live vicariously though the younger ones we go decades earlier haha…

  14. Mrs. Picky Pincher February 15, 2017 at 9:16 AM

Thanks for pulling this together! I’ve already started using the directory to follow even *more* awesome blogs. It’s crazy how many FIRE bloggers there are out there; it makes me quite happy to see. ;)

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:44 AM

      Love to hear that!!

  15. Jason February 15, 2017 at 9:23 AM

How about a section for how they are achieving FI, Real Estate, Stock Market, Dividends, Work, etc?

    1. J. Money February 15, 2017 at 9:44 AM

Hmm… trying to figure out how the best way to portray that easily would be. For the net worth tracker you can tell by looking at any of their reports, and you can also select “real estate” or “investing” categories to see which blogs focus on those, but let me add this to the list to marinate on more. also – you can use the search bar to add dividend or other things too as we tagged a lot of blogs w/ other sub categories in the back end so that would find all of those, if that helps?

  16. Thehappyphilosopher February 15, 2017 at 9:45 AM

Thanks J. Money and Steve. You guys are both rock stars!

  17. Mr Crazy Kicks February 15, 2017 at 9:53 AM

I’m really glad that instead of selling the sites you doubled down :) You’re building a better personal finance community every day. What a great new resource!

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 10:35 AM

Trying man! Def. feels good to get it all into the real world to see once and for all if they are helpful or not!

  18. Mr. Saturday @ Seeking Saturdays February 15, 2017 at 10:04 AM

Woohoo! Right on. I’m excited to go through the list and check out all the blogs I didn’t even know existed! It’s great to have such a connected community of people with similar goals. Makes you feel not so alone. Thanks J$.

  19. Mr. SSC February 15, 2017 at 10:12 AM

Thanks for putting this together! It gives me a new resource to go peruse rather than checking out news – which just gets depressing nowadays. :)

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 10:39 AM

      Haha yeah it does.

Anything important that I need to know about shows up in Twitter anyways :)

  20. Amanda @centsiblyrich February 15, 2017 at 10:13 AM

Thank you, thank you!!! What an awesome resource! LOVE it! :)

  21. Ms. Montana February 15, 2017 at 10:21 AM

It just keeps getting better and better!!! Is there anyway too zoom in more on the map? (tech challenged here!) I want people to come eat icecream with me when they visit Glacier National Park. =) And we totally need more Montana bloggers!

    1. Nate St Pierre February 15, 2017 at 1:09 PM

Um, I’m going to come eat ice cream with you when I hit Glacier next year :)

      1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 10:41 AM

Love it! The map is currently pretty basic at the moment, but we’ll prob be moving to a more robust/helpful one later. I just wanted something quick and dirty to show how many states/countries we’ve hit so far :)

  22. PW February 15, 2017 at 10:26 AM

Beautiful! So glad to hear it!!

  23. Mrs. BITA February 15, 2017 at 10:30 AM

    Thanks J$ and Steve!

Love the stats too. I’ve hit 3 minority categories in the blogger community by being non-white, a woman and having a kid. I can’t wait to hit the biggest minority community of all – the 4% who are retired.

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 10:58 AM

      haha rock on.

  24. The Financial Tech February 15, 2017 at 12:41 PM

  32. Justin @ Doubling Dollars February 16, 2017 at 3:06 AM

Wow, what a great project. I just submitted my new blog. Been a lurking reading of yours for years and finally decided to add my own little thoughts into the mix.

Thank you and all involved for the hard work setting this up. The directory looks and works great!

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:01 AM

Nice!! Welcome aboard – we actually just approved your blog and you’re now in it :)

Love that you disclose your net worth too! You’re on that page as well.

  33. Liz February 16, 2017 at 6:04 AM

Love the directory! Of course it shows just how much in a minority I am-not sure if that’s a good thing or not? Female, 30’s, single income with kids = only 13. :)

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:01 AM

      It’s a special group :)

  34. Kathy February 16, 2017 at 8:11 AM

Absolutely love it. I can see a lot of people using this for connecting with other finance bloggers. 707 entries! I didn’t know that many blogs existed!

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:01 AM

      Now 816 too – it’s amazing.

  35. George@20somethinglawyer February 17, 2017 at 12:07 AM

This directory is extensive work J$! I especially liked the drop down feature. Very useful from a potential-economic-study point of view—If I had the time and discipline, lol. Maybe someday… In the meantime, back to work.

    Keep going J$!

    George

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:02 AM

      Glad you approve :)

  36. Jane February 17, 2017 at 2:54 PM

I love this. I’ve been wanting to find more PF blogs. I love the search options. Thanks for your hard work!! (I did find one misspelled link: chiefmomofficer.org) This directory will keep me busy for weeks, yay!

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:10 AM

Fixed! Thank you!! hopefully overtime we find all the errors :) 99% of it all was user submitted info and just taking us quite a bit of time spot checking the original 600 blogs. All the new stuff should be a-okay!

  37. Dividends Down Under February 18, 2017 at 4:54 AM

Thanks J! Good stuff. We just added ourselves to it..

    Tristan

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:11 AM

Yup – saw and added you up!

  38. Benjamin Davis February 19, 2017 at 9:11 AM

As I said, I believe this will become THE reference for this matter.

Great great job, congrats J. :)

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:11 AM

Thanks Benjamin – I hope it does :)

  39. Chris February 19, 2017 at 10:13 AM

This is amazing. Thank you very much, J.
If you ever make it out to Santa Cruz, I’ll buy you a beer…or 20!

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:11 AM

      *books his flight stat*

  40. Financial Samurai February 20, 2017 at 6:00 PM

Great job you guys! Pretty amazing more than 800 have signed up already. I guess the fun part is to continue coming up with new categories for the 800 over time. Should be a great curate resource!

    Sam

    1. J. Money February 21, 2017 at 11:12 AM

Thanks man :) We’ll be looking to add all kinds of new features to it actually so it’ll hopefully get better and better over time.

  41. Peter K March 28, 2019 at 12:35 PM

Do you know how long it takes for them to respond to your submission? I submitted my blog a couple of weeks ago but had no updates.

    1. J. Money March 28, 2019 at 6:03 PM

      I do not – I’m sorry :(

I know it just sold again though so that’s probably adding to the back up?
