PS: The Wife Told Me Not To Buy Her Anything Today

….But I think it’s a trick ;)  So instead I’m gonna make her something and then take her out to dinner and pop in a movie.  Which is kinda not spending money on her as far as “stuff” goes, but it still shows her I’ve got the appreciation.  Think it’s good?  What are you all doing today if you celebrate the V Day?  Have you ever told your loved one not to buy you anything, and then they listen and it gets weird? Haha… Let’s hear some stories!

PS: Good movies for coupling:  The Notebook, PS: I Love you.
PPS: Good movies for non-Valentine’s coupling: Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Usual Suspects

    It’s a trap! You’re definitely smart for finding a loophole to still get her something hah

  2. Stacey February 14, 2012 at 9:53 AM

    I tell my dh all the time not to get me something and he always does what i ask ;)
    but he is very good at writing his own cards – full of lists of things he loves about me, or memories of some of our best times throughout the years. I enjoy receiving these cards more than any kind of present he could buy.

  3. Emmy February 14, 2012 at 10:16 AM

    OF COURSE ITS A TRICK. Well, I guess I can’t say that because there are some girls who genuinely don’t care. But she’s your wife and carrying your child- SHE WANTS TO DO SOMETHING. Seems like you have it under control though.

    My plans? I’ll probably go to Starbucks and read for a bit and then go home for Glee and New Girl. Which… is a typical Tuesday for me. But they both have Valentines Day themed episodes on tonight and we have a lot of goodies in the office to eat. Valentines Day = make Emily fatter day.

  4. Jessica @ Faith Permeating Life February 14, 2012 at 10:17 AM

    This is what my whole blog post was about today! My husband and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day unless we decide together to do something, and it bugs the heck out of me how all these people (who have never even met me) try to tell him, “No! She’s lying to you! She really wants you to buy her something!” NO! Do not pretend you know me better than my husband does!

  5. J. O. February 14, 2012 at 10:20 AM

    I got a Happy Valentine’s Day text from my husband this morning. That’s all I’m expecting. He bought me a card last week but couldn’t wait to give it to me. Neither of us are very sentimental.
    Maybe I’ll leave the office a little early and cook something tonight as my gift to him. (He usually does the cooking because he gets home first.)

  6. Kim @ Say What?! February 14, 2012 at 10:21 AM

    Well, I say that to my husband all the time and it’s never a trick! He NEVER listens but if he did, I’d still be perfectly happy. I’m not a huge fan of V-day, but in the spirit of giving, I bought him a funny t-shirt and we’re going to have dinner out (nowhere fancy – we’re not fancy grub people).

  7. Jessica @ Faith Permeating Life February 14, 2012 at 10:23 AM

    I feel like I should add that I would not actually be upset if my husband got me something — so your plan is a good one. I am not opposed to nice gifts / loving cards / etc. I just get angry when people try to tell him that I’m “expecting” him to get me something and he’ll be “in trouble” if he doesn’t.

  8. Michelle February 14, 2012 at 10:28 AM

    I always tell the BF not to get me anything. And I mean it. I’ve been telling him this for 6 years. I just don’t care! He should be doing cute things like that all the time :)

  9. bobbi February 14, 2012 at 10:37 AM

    No trick here. Token gifts are fine but really… after you factor in Christmas, b-days, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc… it really gets to be too much. A card and maybe a token gift of chocolate is fine. Boring married couple here though. Honestly, when the money is coming out of the household budget it doesn’t make sense to go out and continually blow a lot of money on these holidays… well, not in this house!

  10. bogofdebt February 14, 2012 at 10:40 AM

    I told my guy just to give me the money we had saved so that I can save it. We agreed to a limit of $25 as our gift to each other and saved in January to achieve this. And I will be watching The Shining tonight as he plays a game.

  11. Erin February 14, 2012 at 10:53 AM

    Grand gestures on V-Day are important to some … but if you do nice things to show your wife you care about her frequently throughout the year, and I’m betting you do, then one day of romance isn’t such a big deal. :)

  12. retirebyforty February 14, 2012 at 11:42 AM

    I’m going to get her a little piece of chocolate. It’s all about the little guy now. :)

  13. Jessica February 14, 2012 at 11:52 AM

    Im actually one of those wives who doesnt want something for Valentines. My husband travels for work so he’s almost never home and for me it seems silly to just celebrate our love on this day. We did exchange the obligatory Happy Valentines texts but that will be it.

  14. Good Cents Savings February 14, 2012 at 12:02 PM

    I’m sure it’s not a trick. From my experience/informal observation not saying what you mean when speaking to a man is generally a recipe for disappointment. ;) We’ll be celebrating with a heart shaped pizza from a local pizza shop – might be buying in to the hype but it’s fun for our daughter and we all love pizza.

  15. LB February 14, 2012 at 12:33 PM

    I don’t like when people say “Don’t get me something”, because I have to at least do something nice for them. I never say don’t get me anything; that is lame. I do, however, like inexpensive ways of showing someone cares, like handwritten notes, or special phone calls.

    Suggestions for you: maybe do something that says I love you and you are the greatest for carrying my child and this might be our last V-Day without the little one? I think something like that would be awesome.

    Plans for today:
    1) Freak out and put out a billion fires at work and fix every f-ing thing I f-ed up yesterday.
    2) Leave work early YES!
    3) Come up with more ideas for my writing class (so far behind because it is such a weird concept of writing… I have to unlearn a lot)
    4) See the movie “The Vow” with my hubby (He totally gets all kinds of V-day points for that movie)
    4) Enjoy the rest of the day/night without freaking out over school and work. (The best part)

    I hope everyone enjoys today!!!

  16. Jen @ Master the Art of Saving February 14, 2012 at 12:52 PM

    I’m one of the chicks who doesn’t need presents, I’d rather have a nice card and create a new memory. This year for Valentine’s Day, my husband gave me a post and a card in one. Sure I had to edit and add some of my own stuff to it, but he worked really hard on it and wanted to do something different. If you want to see, it’s at http://www.mastertheartofsaving.com/2012/02/14/happy-valentine%e2%80%99s-day-save-your-money/

    I don’t think your wife is trying to trick you, but I would still do something crazy special to show her how much she means to you. Like one year, I went out and bought the Darth Tater Mr. Potato Head and cut out 100 little pink hearts. On each one, I wrote down something that I love about my honey and stuck them all inside. He thought it was awesome, which surprised me since he’s a guy. It just takes a little creativity. :-) Happy Valentine’s Day!

  17. Brian February 14, 2012 at 1:12 PM

    The old lady and I have a crazy Valentines Day tradition. The weekend before she gets to pick any movie she wants me to “watch” with her. Then on Valentines day itself I get to pick the movie she has to “watch” with me. Some of my favorite Picks have been Bloodsport, Kung Fu Hustle and the Stallone classic Over the Top.

    I still think I am getting the raw end of the deal, because she does tend to enjoy my choices more than I enjoy hers.

  18. bax February 14, 2012 at 1:59 PM

    It’s not a trick. Seriously, don’t stress, just lay back and let her do the dishes tonight. Valentine’s Day is for relaxing and letting the lady handle the workload, amirite?

  19. Heather February 14, 2012 at 2:06 PM

    We actually don’t do anything for Valentine’s Day (years of waiting tables that night made it a very un-romantic holiday for me) so he doesn’t have to get me anything. People do say that and mean it. :)

    That said, when we were first dating, I told him he didn’t havet to get me something for my birthday since he’s not big on hoildays. I didn’t realize that until after the fact that I at least wanted a birthday card. I told him and now he doesn’t have to get me a present, but he does have to give me a card. lol He’s had a great time getting me anything but traditional birthday cards.

    But making her a gift is awesome! So go you!

  20. Kris @ SimpleIslandLiving February 14, 2012 at 2:38 PM

    It’s not a trick, but it will ingratiate her to you if you do something as a surprise! I’m with Heather, my husband and I spent years waiting tables on Valentine’s Day, so we never do anything for it and don’t expect anything.
    We ladies do like unexpected surprises though!

  21. Skint in the City February 14, 2012 at 2:59 PM

    Ha, I’m doing something similar. Well, you can’t ignore it, can you? But balloons, shop-bought cards and overinflated Valentine’s menus just seem like such a waste to me. We’ll go out on Thursday instead – http://wp.me/pRYrv-aW and meantime kick back at home. Yikes, hope Mr Skint agrees.

  22. Ms. S February 14, 2012 at 3:02 PM

    We’re staying in and making dinner, together. Nothing much going on in these parts. We don’t really ‘do’ valentine’s day.

  23. Tessa February 14, 2012 at 3:46 PM

    Last year my boyfriend spent the entire week leading up to v-day telling me “don’t expect anything, I’m broke” which of course made me think “aww he’s trying to lower my expectations so that I’ll be surprised” I mean I thought I would get SOMETHING. Nope. Not a thing. Not even a handwritten card.
    Do something for her, if you don’t get something for her. I think your plan is top notch!

  24. Monica February 14, 2012 at 4:25 PM

    I am definitely not one of those people. My husband is not the sentimental type so if V-day is the only day I get something, he damn well better do it. LOL This year I got flowers, which I never get, so it was nice. No card, because we have enough of those junking up the house as it. However, with him not being sentimental it’s hard to buy him things. He would rather buy himself something. So I will probably get him a gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods and some chocolate, which may not be a good idea since he is trying to start back eating right. We went out for lunch since he has to work tonight. That was our Valentine Day in a nutshell.

  25. Renee February 14, 2012 at 7:28 PM

    My husband and are celebrating our 6th Valentines Day together. We’ve done too much indulging in the past, so I don’t want any gifts and I am serious about that. LOL- however, when he gets home we are gonna celebrate with a nice home cooked steak dinner. Yum, now if only I could get all three kids in bed by the time he does get home. hmmmm….

  26. Hermoine February 14, 2012 at 8:14 PM

    25 years of marriage here, I never want anything for valentines and he listens to me. An electronic e-card, dinner last week using a Groupon and I am good. His company decided this is a good week for a company wide meeting, so it’s a glass of cheap wine and the Big Bang Theory marathon for me.

  27. Cassie February 14, 2012 at 8:41 PM

    You have a good plan for Valentines day :)

    I made some cookie dough last night so that I could go straight to my boyfriend’s house after work and throw them in the oven. That way he’ll come home to warm cookies and his house will smell nice. I believe the plan tonight is that we’re going skating. I don’t need massive gestures, I just want to spend some quality time with my significant other and feel appreciated.

  28. Jefferson February 14, 2012 at 8:49 PM

    I am ready for a women-led movement to stop the waste of money every Valentine’s Day :-)

  29. Jai February 14, 2012 at 10:26 PM

    I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. It makes me mad that people put importance on Feb. 14th to show love. There are 364 more days in the year. That dozen of roses should be just as meaningful on Feb 15th. I told my fiance that I don’t want anything because I feel that Valentine’s Day should be celebrated every day. It shouldn’t take a holiday for a man to show love to his woman.

  30. Emma February 15, 2012 at 5:37 AM

    Haha, I’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day a couple of times with current Darling. Here are my experiences:

    – went to a restaurant – horribly packed and over priced!
    – went to watch an orchestra play – beautiful, happy we went, but will happily do so at any other time of year
    – Went to watch ‘Valkyrie’ in the cinema – made us both cry, lots of cuddling
    – Don’t actually remember what we did last year ???
    – Yesterday, we ordered Chinese, she got ill and I had to take care of her :)

    I usually buy a card and draw her lots of pictures (haven’t done that in a while) but I’ve been drawing her loads of pictures throughout the year so she knows what that means :)

    Basically – yeah, money doesn’t have to be spent. We do lots of ‘I love you’ things throughout the year, and the fact it’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t really mean that much more! I know I’m never dining out on that day again though!

  31. Money Infant February 15, 2012 at 6:34 AM

    It’s probably not a trick and I like your plan. Well because that’s pretty much what we did for Valentines Day. Tony Roma’s for dinner with my two ladies (the big one and the little one) and then home to watch Breaking Dawn (her pick).

  32. J. Money February 15, 2012 at 9:29 AM

    Hope you all had a good one! And your loved one treats you well EVERY day of the year, instead of just the one ;)

    @Jon B – Haha, it went pretty well if I do say so myself ;)
    @Stacey – I ended up making my wife a card too :) Complete w/ construction paper and all! haha… she said it was the best one she had gotten from me, so yay!
    @Emmy – Awww, I hope it was as nice and relaxing as it sounded! I need a Starbucks buddy to go w/ me sometimes – I always go by my lonesome :(
    @Jessica @ Faith Permeating Life – Haha, yeah – people like to do that ;) As long as you two are happy little peas in the pod it doesn’t matter!
    @J. O. – Haha… I have the opposite problem – I always want to extend the holiday, or gift giving, or even the gift-receiving so it never ends ;) I still haven’t opened my VDay card from yesterday cuz I like looking forward to it!
    @Kim @ Say What?! – Funny t-shirts are awesome! Good choice :)
    @Michelle – Agreed! :)
    @bobbi – Hey, no shame in that!
    @bogofdebt – Haha, nice. What type of game was he playing? Poker? World of Warcraft?
    @Erin – You’re def. on to something there ;)
    @retirebyforty – Oh man, I can’t wait to celebrate holidays together w/ a wee one. I was just thinking yesterday that it will be our last Valentine’s Day without a kid for the rest of our lives :) Pretty crazy!
    @Jessica – As long as you both are happy and on the same page, right? It works :)
    @Good Cents Savings – OOoooh that is cool!! I’d totally do the same thing! Haha… in fact, I’m kinda hungry for that right now ;) Good call.
    @LB – Hehe, hope you got everything done on that list! If not, there’s always today ;)
    @Jen @ Master the Art of Saving – That IS a great gift idea! Haha…. smooth work on that one ;) And your husband too! GREAT note he sent you for sure. Y’all seem happy together :)
    @Brian – Hahaa… well, it’s a damn good tradition to have for sure – I like that :) Y’all are funny.
    @bax – Hah! Not gonna touch that one.
    @Heather – Yeah, when you tell a guy “nothing” the card is usually forgotten too, haha… so good job bringing that one up ;) Sometimes I forget them though until the big time to exchange, so I gotta go rush and make one ;) Cards are very important to my wife too – it’s her favorite part.
    @Kris @ SimpleIslandLiving – Yeah you do! And that’s a-okay, it’s our job to make you feel special :)
    @Skint in the City – That works :) I like to go out sometimes and be in the middle of it all at dinner/etc, but usually can’t take it every year, so sometimes we cook at home instead together. Kinda fun!
    @Ms. S – No shame in that :)
    @Tessa – WOW! Yeah I thought you were gonna say he did something crazy surprising too! Haha… jeez… it reminds me of a friend who had such a hard time picking out what he wanted to get his girl, that he ended up just giving up and giving nothing at all. No gift, no card, nothing. I was like, “But you were out shopping for hours! ANYTHING would have been better than nothing!” Haha… he’s way better about it now, but sometimes us men have to fail once or twice to get on the ball ;)
    @Monica – Dick’s Sporting Goods would be nice! We like that kinda stuff :) I like picking my own stuff out too sometimes (which is why I give gift cards out a lot during birthdays/holidays to people – so they can get exactly what they want).
    @Renee – Haha, you’ll have to tell me your secrets on that as we just had our last Vday without kids! Have no idea how it’ll work in the future once our 1st one comes out in July :) Excited though! Hope it all worked out for you last night!
    @Hermoine – Oh jeez, haha… I still need to give Big Bang a chance too – everytime I see it I just never “get it.” But I can’t tell if it’s cuz I need to watch a few in a row or something, or if it’s just not my style. It’s unbelievably popular though!
    @Cassie – AWESOME IDEA!! I love baked cookies smell!! Man you’re smart.
    @Jefferson – You’ll be waiting a long time ;)
    @Jai – Hey, you won’t hear a complaint from me on that one. I totally agree people should love their other halves every day of the week – both men and women!
    @Emma – All those sound fun! Esp the picture drawing :) I did that myself last night actually, on this big card I made for the Mrs… I drew our future family on it, haha… it looks like a 3rd grader did it, but doesn’t mean it didn’t come from my heart!
    @Money Infant – I like it :) The wife was just asking me about watching Breaking Dawn last night! It’s back on our list again to watch soon.

  33. Nicole February 15, 2012 at 10:33 AM

    I told my husband not to waste the money on sending flowers. He did anyway. $90 for 15 roses, teddy bear and chocolate. Its a nice gesture, and I’m not mad, but it was $90. Oh well….I guess if he never remembered then I would be upset.
    I got him tickets to a murder/mystery comedy dinner show. To me that is money better spent, but hey…the flowers do look pretty on my desk and getting flowers delivered to work always makes the other girls jealous! lol

  34. bogofdebt February 15, 2012 at 11:15 AM

    some UFC game was what he was playing (whatever one that came out yesterday). It was a good night–I got to watch a movie he hates and he got to play his xbox.

  35. Aloysa @ My Broken Coin February 17, 2012 at 6:31 PM

    So how did your Valentine’s go? We didn’t do anything because I was … blogging and my husband was cooking. And that’s how it goes pretty much every day. :)

  36. J. Money February 19, 2012 at 12:04 PM

    @Nicole – HAH! $90 is no joke for sure. He must really love you ;) Those tickets you got are killer! (no pun intended) I love going to those things – such an experience!
    @bogofdebt – Haha, whatever works :)
    @Aloysa @ My Broken Coin – Haha… same here actually, I blog and the wife studies and makes dinner – we like it ;) Our Valentine’s went pretty well, thanks for asking. We hit up a nice dinner (we rarely go anywhere fancy), and then watched a movie and just relaxed. Pretty normal for V Days, but we like traditional stuff sometimes :)

  37. Jonatha February 14, 2017 at 5:08 PM

    She tells me dont gi e her nothing but i try to she gets mad if i dont and if i do so what can i do to make my crazy wife happy
