I Got Fired.

There – I said it out loud.  I got fired.

And just like that I’m a full-time blogger :)

What do you say when that happens to you?  When you’re drafting a post one minute titled  “Designing Your Own Lifestyle”, and then seconds later it becomes a reality?  Is that fate?  Luck?  What are the odds that you get terminated the day before you give your 2 weeks notice?  I don’t know… but I’ve got to say I haven’t felt this alive in quite a while.

How it happened

All kinds of fast, that’s how.  First, I read a memo to all employees that our paycheck’s going to be delayed a week.  I’m pissed off because it’s just thrown out there as if that’s totally normal and OK, without any explanations whatsoever, so I decide it would be smart/ballsy/awesome to reply all with a quick “Does that mean our company is in trouble??” Little did I know I was already on the chopping block, and my email would get shut off 5 minutes later (classy).

Within seconds, I get a half-dozen frantic calls from a co-worker, and a pile of text messages saying it was urgent to call him back (I was currently indisposed on the metro).  I call him back and hear that he was just let go, and that I should probably watch my back when I walk through that door. The one that’s staring me right in the face 3 feet away.  Wow.

I stand there for about 15 seconds running through all the possibilities of what’s about, or not about, to happen – and then I walk in.  The whole time I’m climbing up those stairs, I just keep thinking “Today could be your last day. Today could be your last day.” I was a little giddy, and I was a little nervous. (okay, a LOT nervous)

As soon as I walk through that door I’m called into “the office.”  I’m told to take a seat, and I say something stupid like “is that the seat for fired people?” and I refuse to sit down ;)  And then he Donald Trumps me.  “Restructuring” he says. “Aka our company is flat broke,” I think. Goes on to tell me 1/2 of the start-up is canned, and that he’s sorry it *had to be* done now, right before Xmas. No talk of severance, no signing of anything, no insurance mention, nothing.  Just a 1-2-3 out the door you go.  (after turning over my keys, of course.)

5 years at the company over. Just like that.

What I did over the next hour

There’s a lot of things that go through your mind at this point – but the one thing I didn’t want to do was burn any bridges.   After all, a man’s gotta keep his reputation!  Do you want to be known as the guy who told you to F*ck off and that he hates your face? Of course not.  You want to leave that joint as smoothly and smartly as the first day you signed on.

Plus, as far as my situation went, who the hell was going to MAKE all the stuff our company was selling? All those websites and baubles and widgets, etc? I’m the only designer?? They hadn’t thought about that yet (you’ll see why in a bit), so I promptly emailed everyone in the company – from my personal email since my work email had been disabled – and let them know it was a pleasure working with them.  And it had been – for the most part :)  And then I called my CEO (who wasn’t the one who fired me) and thanked him as well. Because I think it’s an important thing to do, and it also shows respect.

But ultimately, all that thanking and ass kissing helps set you up for one thing, and one thing only – future business.  Maybe off a reference, or a lead, or even with the same company down the road – you just never know. So within all the thank yous and “let’s grab beers” sometimes, I planted the seed that the Design Shop of J$ is now open for business! Even though I have no idea if it is, or if I’d even want to be associated w/ the company ever again.

And guess what happened?  The same guy that fired me 4 hours earlier called me up and said he needed my help?!!! HAH!  Didn’t see that one coming ;)  Who knows if anything will come of it (we’re still in talks to see if this new relationship makes sense – aka if they want to pay my now higher freelance rates!), but the point is you just really never know.  And if you can be proactive about it, and let people know how you can benefit THEM – even when they’re least expecting it (like when they’re firing you) or they don’t even know they need you – the chances of success becomes much higher.

It was then time to pack up, and get out of there.

My Newly Designed Lifestyle

So now what? What happens when you’re now part of an ugly statistic of unemployment? Party time – Wooooo!!!!  Haha….   nah, this ain’t the old J$ anymore ;) While I did consume 2 adult beverages with a friend right after, I simply went into survival mode and powered up Plan B.  The plan I was trying to pull off come January 1st, and the one I’d been saving up $50,000 for.  You know – The “be the boss of me” one!  We’re two weeks ahead of schedule, and about $4,000 off (boooooo) but reality is what it is and you’ve gotta do what it takes to make $hit happen.

I called up my girl who’d been holding a desk for me at her awesomely sexy design studio (where I’m currently typing this out) and I told her the time has finally come.  She welcomed me in, I signed my new $500/mo office lease, and one hour later I was unpacked and working out of the new J. Money Headquarters :)  Pretty insane, huh?

Moving forward…

I’m not exactly sure what happens going forward as I’ve never worked for myself before.  I know I’ll need more money, and that I need to hustle even MORE than I was before (I just lost $70,000+ a year for crying out loud), but I’m feeling pretty damn positive about things.

THIS IS IT!!  MY DREAM STARTS NOW!!!

I’m a freakin’ full-blown entrepreneur bitches!!!   Haha… This is how I choose to use my time now. I am no longer working anymore. I am blogging, and building, and learning, and networking, and helping, and collaborating, and purely doing exactly what makes me happy every day. And I’m giving myself 1 year to make it sustainable – absolutely no job searching (yes – the wife has signed off!)

I know things won’t be perfect, and I’ll probably have a financial break at next month’s Net Worth update, but at the end of the day I can say I’m DOING it.  I am taking this opportunity and running as far as I possibly can with it.If I fail, F it. It’s not every day you get a wake up call like that ;)

————————–
UPDATE: There are rumors going around that my (ex) CEO is getting $480,000 a year.  How sick is that?  For a company 10 6 people strong? Also heard the remaining employees may have to defer paychecks for the next 2 months… it’s safe to say I don’t miss that place.

UPDATE #2: THANK YOU!!!! Wow, guys, THANK YOU for all the love & support!!!  I wish I could get fired every week :) Seriously, I have never ever been this bombarded with messages and emails and calls and tweets and everything y’all have been sending over so far.  I don’t know what to say.  Just know that I am deeply touched, and I am reading every last comment you guys leave! Thank you so much for believing in me – it means everything in the world.  The next time I doubt myself the first thing I’m doing is coming back here to re-read all your kind words :)  God bless everyone, have a happy holidays!!!

UPDATE #3: The company has since went under.

  6. Meredith December 17, 2010 at 8:10 AM

Jay, I’m happy for you! And you are going to do so, so well in your new venture.

That being said, I hope that you are going to apply for unemployment benefits. Every little bit of money will help, plus it’s money that you are entitled to.

    Best of luck!

  7. Mr. ToughMoneyLove December 17, 2010 at 8:11 AM

J – Congrats – best post you’ve ever published. You are doing the right thing and no matter how this chapter ends, you will come out stronger and better.

It’s not about luck now. It’s about you.

  8. Julie December 17, 2010 at 8:13 AM

I’m convinced things like this happen for a reason. It’s so cool you already had your plan in place. I’m envious! Good luck!

  9. jolie December 17, 2010 at 8:18 AM

I have to admit when I saw the title of your post in my feeder, I was holding my breath, hoping when I opened the post I’d see some playful tongue and cheek about getting fired from doing laundry and shrinking something.

I can’t believe that this all happened so fast, so abruptly and the week before Christmas. You are so wonderfully optimistic. so sorry you’re going through this right now, but excited for your future.

  10. Kristia@Family Balance Sheet December 17, 2010 at 8:18 AM

Sometimes you have to be pushed off the cliff to fly. Congratulations and Good Luck.

I’m looking forward to following along on your ride.

  11. Jake December 17, 2010 at 8:36 AM

Here’s a pint of Guiness to you J$. I wish you nothing but success in you new endeavor.

  12. Jeremy Walter December 17, 2010 at 8:37 AM

One of the best posts I’ve read in the blog world for a long time. You’re going to kill it out there on your own. I’m excited for you, J. This could be one of the best things to ever happen to you, and you’re way more prepared than 99% of everyone else.

  13. S W December 17, 2010 at 8:43 AM

J$- although most people are probably saying they’re sorry for you right now, I’m so happy for you! You finally have a shot at doing something you’ve wanted to do for a while (work for yourself) and now you have no excuses not to. You’re an extremely successful person and I’m sure this new venture will be no different. You’ve even got the $ in the bank for back up (which is a lot more than probably most people have in case of emergency!) Good luck J$ and I look forward to your posts as a newly freed man!

  14. cat December 17, 2010 at 8:44 AM

You can do it!!! Awesome!!! And great attitude about it too!

  15. Wojo December 17, 2010 at 8:50 AM

Definitely one of the biggest coincidences I have ever seen! :) I’m so glad though that you were already prepared to make the move, and have no doubt that you’ll thrive!

  16. Roger Wohlner December 17, 2010 at 8:53 AM

Best of luck. I went out on my own over a decade ago and have never regretted it. A few boring things:

You’ll need to pay estimated taxes, make sure to put away money from each check you receive. At some point you’ll want to think about what form of business is best for you (LLC, S-corp, etc.). As soon as you cash flow permits set-up a retirement plan for yourself (SEP, solo 401k, etc.). Get a business accounting system in place. Many, many more but this stuff is part of the game so to speak.

  17. Curt December 17, 2010 at 8:54 AM

Good luck J$ – only 2 weeks ahead of schedule!

  18. Edward - Entry Level Dilemma December 17, 2010 at 8:55 AM

Getting downsized sucks; I’ve been there…twice. It’s not an easier when you know it’s coming, either. But, as you pointed out, you already had one foot out the door, so you’re in better shape than I ever was.

  19. Edward - Entry Level Dilemma December 17, 2010 at 8:58 AM

Oh, and you should chat up Flexo from Consumerism Commentary, he recently made the transition from working stiff to working for himself, too.

  20. Kay Lynn (Bucksome) December 17, 2010 at 9:02 AM

J, you’ll look back and think it’s the best thing that ever happened to you!

    Congratulations on your new business.

  21. Mike Piper December 17, 2010 at 9:03 AM

I give you both condolences and congratulations, hehe.

Obviously our methods of self-employment differ significantly, but if there’s anything I can do to help, let me know. :)

  22. Kevin (of No Debt Plan) December 17, 2010 at 9:17 AM

I love that you’ve faced what could be a personal tragedy, looked it in the eye, and did not blink. From walking out with your stuff to walking in and signing a lease for your new business… the same day? That’s ballsy. I love it.

Life is an adventure and you’ve certainly embraced it. Congratulations are in order. Let me know if I can help. (Also, are you planning to share what your various service offerings are? Might need you in the future.)

  23. Brandi December 17, 2010 at 9:19 AM

I’m so excited for you. I should be saying “sorry they fired you dude” but honestly, I am JEALOUS!!!

What an exciting way to start up the new year!

I can’t wait to see what happens over the next few months.

And with all that ‘free time’ (har har) if you find yourself wanting to fill up time with working out…I know this great personal trainer/fitness instructor who has begun the process of emailing clients (just friends right now) workouts…training…from a distance ;)

  24. Mike December 17, 2010 at 9:20 AM

There’s a special place in hell for places that fire people with no severance a week before Christmas. That said, congrats on being 100% prepared for this & ready to roll. That’s the jest of a lot of personal finance, be prepared for the worst & ready to take advantage of any opportunity. You my friend are head of the class in that regard.

  25. Kevin @ Thousandaire.com December 17, 2010 at 9:20 AM

Very few people are prepared for unemployed like you are. If you were already planning on quitting, then all I can say is congratulations. Here’s the big question:

Are you going to file for unemployment?

  26. Diamond December 17, 2010 at 9:22 AM

Absolutely, positively, EVERYTHING happens for a reason. There are no accidents in life. Even though you were going to give a two week notice, it’s obvious there is a greater plan for your life. Sometimes our greatest work comes in moments of uncertainty. One day you’ll look back and say, “Wow, if I hadn’t gotten fired, ___ might not have happened…” Be encouraged, your best is yet to come! Congrats. I’m excited for you. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  27. Molly On Money December 17, 2010 at 9:26 AM

Two years ago I quit my job after praying everyday to get fired. I know it’s hard mentally to get fired but I was ready for it!
Good luck- you’ve got that fire lite under your keester!
Get that little donate button set up on your blog ASAP!!

  28. Philip December 17, 2010 at 9:28 AM

Wow, You almost make me want to get fired! But I am nowhere near as prepared for it as you are but I would have to get creative QUICK!

Congrats on being ready for this movement, and thank goodness you are not scared outta your mind like old J$ would probably have been.

  29. Beckey & Jeff December 17, 2010 at 9:29 AM

Wow! Bad news and awesome attitude! You rock and all we can say is Keep On Rocking! Your blessing in disguise has arrived. We wish you the best and, as our friend Annie says, “You CAN Do Eet!” :D

  30. SAM December 17, 2010 at 9:29 AM

Dude, you’re totally entitled to severance — you’ve got to be. Follow up with your HR department and see what they say.

  31. Ashley December 17, 2010 at 9:30 AM

Congrats!! You are going to do awesome! I’m really proud of you.

  32. Uncle El December 17, 2010 at 9:31 AM

PS. IS that you on the PIc?

  33. Heather December 17, 2010 at 9:36 AM

Right on! Congrats and good luck.

I have faith that you’ll succeed in everything you do!

  34. The Financialite December 17, 2010 at 9:42 AM

J$ – CONGRATS on moving forward! Everything happens for a reason and trust me, its the best thing that could ever happen to you :) Good luck with blogging full-time – looking forward to the upcoming posts!!

  35. Ricardo Murph II December 17, 2010 at 9:44 AM

Congratulations!! I am excited for you! They say success is when opportunity meets preparation. I wish you much success. I am truly inspired. I am going to start my be my own boss fund too. Good luck!

  36. Doctor S December 17, 2010 at 9:46 AM

My main man J $. You and I both know everything happens for a reason and this was just fate knocking on your door telling you the time is NOW to get your brand churning on your own. So instead of sadness, its a pure congratulatory celebration to you! I look forward to enjoying this next chapter of your life and hopefully doing some work with you!

I have an image of a J$ business card in my head. Done deal son.

  37. Bonnie December 17, 2010 at 9:46 AM

Congrats on your new possibilities J$!! I’m with you as long as you’ll write about it for me! :) Good luck! I loved this post, it was awesome, and full of good advice for keeping communications open even with people who you don’t want to….

  38. Trinnie S December 17, 2010 at 9:50 AM

Wow, best of luck, to you, my friend! And if you need financial advice, hit up our girl, June!! :)

  39. Karmella December 17, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Holy fucking shit is what I said when I read the title. And then I smiled when I read the post, because you’re awesome. You’re a superstar, and you’ll rock it out.

So as many years as I’ve been reading here, I’ve got no clue what you do – drop me a line with a blurb and some general idea about freelance rates and I’ll see what I’ve got hanging around.

  40. Daniel December 17, 2010 at 9:52 AM

Congrats on your new venture. It sounds like you went all Mad Men on your situation! Good luck!

  41. Jeff @ Sustainable Life Blog December 17, 2010 at 9:55 AM

    Wow J$,
I dont know if I should say congrats or I’m sorry this went down (plus a week before christmas….little rude).
Anyway, good luck (and make sure your new boss isnt an asshole ;)

  42. brewcitybabe4 December 17, 2010 at 9:56 AM

  43. Sense December 17, 2010 at 9:57 AM

whoooo boy! what a doozy. I’m sorry it went down like that, and a little bit ahead of schedule. It sounds like you are nearly ready for this surprise, though, and actually making lemonade! We all look forward to seeing what you do! Let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do to help you along. We’re rooting for you!

  44. N.W.Journey December 17, 2010 at 9:57 AM

I’ve been following your blog for a little while now. You seem ready for this, good luck to you!

  45. Lulu December 17, 2010 at 9:59 AM

I am so sorry to hear about you losing your job J. You are definitely resilient and it shows by the way that instead of sinking into depression you promptly started on your back up plan.

Congratulations on becoming a full time blogger as you are truly one of the more inspiring writers out there.

I am sure that you will be able to get another full time job quite soon….if you do decide to go back to working for someone else.

    All the best!

  46. Moneymonk December 17, 2010 at 10:00 AM

A man with your skills ….. you will be alright~

  47. Kathleen December 17, 2010 at 10:00 AM

That’s awesome! My company laid a bunch of people off this week, and not gonna lie…I was a little disappointed I wasn’t on the list!

Best of luck with the new ventures!

  48. Amber December 17, 2010 at 10:01 AM

Wow! Love your positivity! I am so excited for you!!! What a great post – can’t wait to see what this year has in store for you!

    Amber

  49. tom December 17, 2010 at 10:05 AM

Dude… so I’m not sure whether to say I’m sorry or congrats, so we’ll do this… Sorry it happened right before you’re plan started, but congrats on initiating the plan!!

On another note… what’s your plan on severance (they had damn well better give you something), medical, and unemployment (even though you’re not technically unemployed)?

PS… the guy in the picture… kinda creepy!

  50. Money Smarts December 17, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Good luck with the new venture.

I’m a bit curious as to why you would immediately sign up for a $500/month work space (plus commuting costs) when you don’t seem to have any contracts lined up?

  51. Matt December 17, 2010 at 10:08 AM

J-Money you positive attitude is encouraging. Your living the dream that we all have. Even though the timing wasn’t perfect, maybe in the end you will look back and realize it was perfect. Kudos to you for all that crazy savings the last 10 years or so. I think your savings is what is helping you breathe a little easier. Best of luck to you. You deserve to be successful.

  52. Jamie December 17, 2010 at 10:23 AM

    Yay you!!! Congrats!

  53. ss4bc December 17, 2010 at 10:26 AM

J, if this is exactly how it went down, I’m amazed. I’ve never heard of anyone making it through a firing so smoothly! Congrats on getting fired, man!

  54. Leslie Blackston-Favors December 17, 2010 at 10:30 AM

Sorry to hear about what happened. Hang in there. There’s truth to the saying that when one door closes another opens.

  55. Miss Delish December 17, 2010 at 10:31 AM

If anyone can rock this situation and make something great out of it, its you. Good luck, sir! You rock!

  56. Paul Williams December 17, 2010 at 10:33 AM

Glad to see you’re making the most of it, J Money! I personally know it’s not fun going through that, but I’m sure you’ll be successful with your new business if you work at it like you have this blog. I wish you the best – show them what they’re missing out on!

  57. Courtney December 17, 2010 at 10:35 AM

That’s absolutely rotten timing, but I’m impressed by how fast you bounced back. Good luck and looking forward to hearing about the new adventure!

  58. Kaye December 17, 2010 at 10:48 AM

Wow…there is a lot of “wow” in that post. Sorry that you had to go through the process of the firing, but it sounds like you really are okay with it. And the fact that you are now pursuing your dream is incredible! Best of luck!

  59. Clare December 17, 2010 at 10:52 AM

Whoa! I didn’t see this coming. This is going to sound bad, but it couldn’t have happened to a more appropriate person. NOT that you deserved to lose your job, just that you’re so responsible/awesome with money that you were already set up to fly free. I’m psyched for you and we will all be there to hold your hand and comfort you at next month’s net worth update.

A huge congratulations is in order!

  60. Big Cajun Man December 17, 2010 at 10:56 AM

You dealt with it perfectly. I saw it coming and dealt with it in a similar fashion (but maybe not as well as you), and I was able to get a very good set of recommendations from my former bosses which led to my current job.

Telling everyone to “suck on my big fat…”, while it sounds satisfying, it is not, there is no point. Everyone is a possible future employer, so be nice and keep smiling.

    Good luck!

  61. Wojo December 17, 2010 at 11:02 AM

The fact that this post already has 58 comments tells me a lot about how you’ll fare. :)

  62. Sox December 17, 2010 at 11:04 AM

Sounds like your life just got more awesome!
Your great outlook on life is going to take you far!

  63. Kevin I December 17, 2010 at 11:05 AM

I’m really amped to see where this goes, can’t wait to read about your adventures.

  64. Peliroo December 17, 2010 at 11:07 AM

J$, You are the man. The universe has amazing things in store for you. I can’t wait to see where life takes you next. :)
    Huzzah to you!
    Sarah Corrice/Peliroo.

  65. Brad Chaffee December 17, 2010 at 11:15 AM

    DUDE!

Congratulations on your new adventure bro! IF anyone can pull this off it’s you so keep being positive!

    You’re the man!!

  66. Janet December 17, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Yay, J$! Post some pics of your new sexy design studio.

I’m sure you’ll do great … you have a following, and plenty of opportunities will come your way. :)

  67. Michelle December 17, 2010 at 11:20 AM

You’re not the boss of me now
You’re not the boss of me now
You’re not the boss of me now, and you’re not so big
You’re not the boss of me now
You’re not the boss of me now
You’re not the boss of me now, and you’re not so big

    ala TMBG

Get on with your bad self, JMoney – now is when the BIG money starts. JMillion will be your new moniker.

  68. Lauren December 17, 2010 at 11:26 AM

You always find a way to make me laugh. Good luck on your new venture. I know you will go far. You already have!

  69. Gina @ The Crave to Save December 17, 2010 at 11:30 AM

I am so happy for you! You were prepared for this and I know you are going to do well at whatever you put your mind to. Cheers!

  70. Julie G. December 17, 2010 at 11:34 AM

Way to go J$. I am so happy for you. Atleast you had a plan in place. I wish the best for you and yours! May you be able to say “what recession?” during this whole adventure!

  71. michelle December 17, 2010 at 11:35 AM

yay living the dream! good luck! …does this mean you’ll be at more DC blogger happy hours? cause i’ve been kinda dying to meet my financial idol ;)

  72. Michael Senchuk December 17, 2010 at 11:40 AM

Hey man, not sure if condolences or congratulations are appropriate in this instance, so let’s go with congratulations! If you ever need a hand with anything you know where to find me.

  73. Jill Palmer December 17, 2010 at 11:41 AM

JMONEY!!!! I think you already know this but I’m going to say it loudly-

    THIS IS EFFING GREAT NEWS!!!!

You’ve prepared for success, you’ve wanted this– the universe just gave it to you a little sooner and quite frankly its perfect timing. I think with all of the support systems (people+money) that you’ve created for yourself, that this is EFFING GREAT NEWS.

Seriously. Now you get to be, do and live EXACTLY as you’ve wanted to for the past few years… I’m so excited for you.

    Congrats, JillyP

  74. Cassie December 17, 2010 at 11:51 AM

While getting fired is a bit of a kick in the pants… WAY TO GO!! I look forward to seeing what you write about next as a full time self-employed entrepreneur :) Congratulations.

  75. Krystal December 17, 2010 at 11:54 AM

Earlier this year I was fired as well. I wasn’t prepared and didn’t have the guts to try freelancing and being my own boss. So I found a full-time job within 2 months. Luckily I was given some major breaks over the next few months and ended up boosting my side freelance work by getting a gig blogging for a huge Canadian newspaper.

So good for you for taking this huge step and committing yourself to this! It’s amazing what kind of doors open for you once you put yourself out there. Even though it was lame that they fired you so close to Christmas (and with no severance package!?), but you have such a good attitude about it. Can’t wait to hear about your journey! :)

  76. Annalisa Spencer December 17, 2010 at 11:57 AM

Way to go, man — live your dream!

  77. Ryan December 17, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Best of luck, J$. Drop me a line after Christmas and well set up that call we were talking about. We’ll build you a plan to dominate! :)

  78. Getting Close to 30... December 17, 2010 at 12:04 PM

Awesome! I never though I’d say that to someone that just lost their job, but this is a amazing opportunity and it sounds like you’ve already got the wheels turning! Congrats!

  79. Cristina December 17, 2010 at 12:09 PM

I think that congratulations are in order. :) Here’s to a new chapter of your life!

  80. Melanie Spring December 17, 2010 at 12:13 PM

    Rock it out. Entrepreneurs ROCK!!!!

  81. MoneyCone December 17, 2010 at 12:20 PM

Wow! I know that feeling. Sorry to hear this – why do companies always choose Fridays and holidays to fire someone?

By the way, the right term would be laid-off! You weren’t fired! :)

Good luck to you and I’m sure you’ll come out with flying colors!

  82. MoneyEnergy December 17, 2010 at 12:26 PM

Wow, what a story. Smart moves on your part. You’re already practically re-hired doing what you want on your own terms?:)!! Nice.

  83. Wayne December 17, 2010 at 12:28 PM

Wow. Glad to see you are taking it well. Only lousy part is no severance package. If so, then you were fired. Being laid off means you get something.

    Best of luck

  84. Joe Taylor Jr. December 17, 2010 at 12:35 PM

The universe just gave you a great big nudge — especially if you’re getting to rock out the personal finance articles while still picking up some freelance coin from your previous employer. All the better for all of us that love your writing!

  85. Evan December 17, 2010 at 12:39 PM

Best of Luck J Money! If you need anything throw me an email

  86. Big Ass Superstar December 17, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Congratulations, sir! You are freshly liberated! Love bomb for yoU!

Really, I wouldn’t blame you if you had diarrhea-inducing terror and anxiety right now, but I don’t know anyone who’s more prepared for this development than you. Maybe Baker, but I’ve never known him to have a job anyway.

And good on ya for keeping it classy. They say you meet the same people on the way up as you do on the way down. The people who’re dickish to you now could be asking you for a job later on, and vice versa.

Remember to wash your hands later today. Because right now, you’ve got life by the balls.

  87. Trina December 17, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Congrats! As odd as it is to say congrats to someone who just got fired…it sounds like it is a very positive step in your life. Love the optimistic outlook and genius idea to thank everyone and stay classy:)
I’ve loved following you in 2010 and I’m excited to see what great things you will do in 2011!

  88. Kristina December 17, 2010 at 1:04 PM

Congrats Jay!!! I think that getting fired was the universe’s way of telling you that…you can do it, go out on your own and do it. It was the push that you have been waiting for. You are going to be great in your new adventure becuase YOU ARE GREAT.

  89. logan December 17, 2010 at 1:11 PM

I never comment, but I have been subscribed to your RSS for a while. Just want to wish you the best of luck… atleast you had a “Plan B” and you have options… most people arent in the same fortunate position as you.

  90. Becky December 17, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Congrats! I’ve been there, in your position, and I wasn’t nearly in the financial stratosphere you’ve prepared yourself for. I look up to you for your motivation and determination. Good job!

  91. jennifer December 17, 2010 at 1:35 PM

First of all, I am sorry that this happened to you and some of your co-workers! But you really handled yourself with great resistance and grace! I am so very excited to see what all you have in store and even more excited to know that if anyone can do it, you can- I mean, you are J$ and all….. haha!
Wishing you the best of luck- and you betta’ keep us updated around here!

  92. Lilith December 17, 2010 at 1:36 PM

  95. Andrew @ Money Crashers December 17, 2010 at 2:10 PM

Never thought I’d say this to someone who just got fired…but Congratulations! I know this is what you wanted and the timing was just about perfect. Would love to see you kill it out there and succeed like crazy! You’re exactly the kind of guy that can do it J!

  96. Briana @ GBR December 17, 2010 at 2:10 PM

So you definitely just caused a frenzy at our office. “Did J really get fired?! OMG OMG OMG!” That’s absolutely insane! But you are officially my hero. You took matters into your own hands IMMEDIATELY and I love that. You’re definitely going to be doing big things. I would say they were just holding you back, but $70,000 isn’t exactly what I would call bad working conditions haha. Good luck and you definitely have me rooting for you.

  97. Nate R December 17, 2010 at 2:13 PM

Good luck in the new venture. Hope you and the misses have a great Christmas and are looking forward to the new year.

  98. DC Grrl December 17, 2010 at 2:18 PM

good luck to you – sexy budgets made this possible!

  99. Pete December 17, 2010 at 2:22 PM

J., I gotta say I’m impressed with your positive attitude and outlook after just having been let go. Although it doesn’t sound like you were fired – but let go or downsized. In any event, I’m sure you’ll be 100% successful in whatever you decide to do going forward, and I wish you the best of luck (not that you’ll need any) as you move forward.

  100. SunflowerGurl December 17, 2010 at 2:23 PM

“If not know, when?” It’s your time to fly J$–budgets are damn sexy!

  101. Hank December 17, 2010 at 2:28 PM

    J,

Congrats on getting fired man. I’m jealous of your new entrepreneur lifestyle now. I know that you will knock it out of the park. I just wanted to tell you good luck man. It is going to be a great new chapter of J Money and I can’t wait to watch it unfold.

  102. Tom @ Canadian Finance Blog December 17, 2010 at 2:31 PM

    Well played J, well played.

I love that you immediately got the wheels in motion. It obviously helped that you were planning to do it soon anyways, but a good warning to others to have a backup plan, even if you never use it.

  103. Mistress Susan December 17, 2010 at 2:32 PM

J, I agree with Adam (post #3) : You, sir, are the most inspirational person I know right now.
I am in a very similar siutation you are in. I am now forced to do blogging fulltime. Like you, it is exciting and scary at the same time because of finances. I know I can do it…just like you!

  104. gina December 17, 2010 at 2:34 PM

Wow–what a shock that must have been from you. I am impressed by your restraint when saying your goodbyes. It is so hard not to be bitter!! I do hope that this situation opens another exciting chapter to your life–best of luck!!

  105. Craig December 17, 2010 at 2:39 PM

Sounds like you had an awesome opportunity handed to you! Maybe not when you expected but you just grabbed the reigns of your life. Run with it! Can’t wait to see what come of it. Congrats.

  106. Philip Taylor December 17, 2010 at 2:39 PM

This is awesome! You will kick a$$, I know. Can’t wait to see what’s next. So happy to see that your wife has signed off on it, and you won’t have to be job hunting. You got the health insurance covered? Let me know if you need anything.

  107. David Leonhardt December 17, 2010 at 2:40 PM

Congratulations! I remember when I quit life as an employee, I spent a lot of time making sure all my bridges were intact, even tough I ended up using very few. But I recall a number of folks I called saying, “I wish I could do what you’re doing.” Of course, they could. But most people don’t unless they get a good kick in the posterior. I’m not saying that working freelance is for everyone, just that there’s only one way to find out. Best of luck on your renewed career path.

  108. Healthy Amelia December 17, 2010 at 2:41 PM

Wow, you are a class act, J. Dignity under pressure! Good luck with being your own boss, I know you’re not only going to succeed, you’re going to love it.

  109. Heather December 17, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Excellent – you’re joining the ranks!

Impressed you managed to keep a nice-enough smile when leaving though; my last ‘job’ I just up and left (I blame inexperience and the general feel of the whole place, dead end job anyway with extremely low morale). Made me so much happier though! So congratulations, and best of luck for the future!

Also if you need any help let me know.

  110. Mama Geek December 17, 2010 at 2:45 PM

Good luck to you! Way to turn a potentially negative experience into a positive one.

  111. Diva With A Purpose December 17, 2010 at 3:06 PM

Awesome!!! I’ve followed your blog for a few months and this inspired me to make my first “real” comment! You are such an inspiration and, as others have predicted, I’m sure you will be successful in whatever your next venture is.

  112. Mickiala Williams December 17, 2010 at 3:09 PM

I can relate to the fullest! I was laid off a couple months ago and I took it like a grain of salt. I like your strategy, “Move Forward”. I started by own company (Versa Consulting LLC) in November. I am in the process of designing my own website to showcase my skills (Financial Bookkeeping, Independent contracting, etc). I say all that to say….START THAT HUSTLE because you have many opportunities ahead of you. The $70,000 you were making prior will TRIPLE J. Money.

Good luck and I will stay in touch with you sexy Blog! : )

  113. Len Penzo December 17, 2010 at 3:18 PM

Sounds like your (ex) management needs to take a little sensitivity training. I’m very sorry it went down the way it did, J. But something tells me you’re going to be just fine in the end. In fact, I know this is going to turn out to be a real blessing.

    All the best,

    Len

  114. Bridget December 17, 2010 at 3:44 PM

Wow! Terrifying and exciting. I like that this is just and opportunity for you and not a crisis, that really show how money pays off (bad pun, I know). Looking forward to reading about this new adventure for you!

  115. LB December 17, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Holy F, 8 days until Christmas and you get laid off. Glad you have a plan! I know I was one that complained about your benefits, but I never thought you would get fired. Good luck!

  116. Yana December 17, 2010 at 4:20 PM

For a minute there, I thought you worked for Yahoo – I read that they let many people go just before Xmas. But wow! I admire your positive attitude and wish you wild success!

  117. Burnette December 17, 2010 at 4:33 PM

Woot Woot! Congrats man :) You are super inspiring and motivating all of us that we don’t have to be zombies in our dead-end jobs. You’re gonna kick ass!

  118. Nicole December 17, 2010 at 4:35 PM

Congratulations! Best of luck in your new entreprenneurial ventures. You can do it! :^)

  119. duddes02 December 17, 2010 at 4:53 PM

    I’m rooting for you JMoney!!

  120. FB @ FabulouslyBroke.com December 17, 2010 at 4:56 PM

Congratulations. Seriously. :) You saved all that money for a reason.

  121. Tameika December 17, 2010 at 5:05 PM

I love your optimism in the face of a potentially bad situation. Kudos to you for already having a “get free” plan in place that you can now set in motion. Its obvious that you are extremely talented and again have loads of optimism so I believe 2011 will be a trying but ultimately successful year for you. Best of luck and I look forward to continuing to read about your journey.

  122. Ebony December 17, 2010 at 5:35 PM

Congratulations! May God prosper the work of your hands and May the Earth yield its strength to you.I believe with all my heart, your best days are ahead of you my friend. No matter how its disguised, the day you were fired marked a turning point of sorts and the beginning of something Grrrrrrrrrreat. ( I am a 1st time commenter as well)

  123. nicole December 17, 2010 at 5:38 PM

    Wow! Congratulations!!

  124. C Ann December 17, 2010 at 6:57 PM

So I came to your blog right after work, just as I do everything, and if you couldve seen my expression you’ve wouldve thought my best friend got fired. It’s feels like we’ve all been going through this process with you. May God bless you in all your future endeavors. Although it didn’t play out exactly when or how you expected, you are undoubtedly prepared for this. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason so CONGRATULATIONS. I am excited to see whats to come! And I’m also curious about the Mrs. reaction.

  125. retirebyforty December 17, 2010 at 7:01 PM

    You are AWESOME!!
Good job on the graceful exit. I don’t know if I can do that. I’m picturing myself doing a cartwheel at the front door and yelling “See ya, Suckers!.”
    Hahahah! nice move!

  126. Anna December 17, 2010 at 7:02 PM

I get the feeling there will be PLENTY of opportunities out there for you. It’s actually the perfect timing to focus 100 percent on your blog what with traditional media and businesses looking to partner up with new media voices. I believe you’ve got the gumption and the smarts to make it work out. Let’s talk soon :-)

  127. mbhunter December 17, 2010 at 7:09 PM

Oh man … I feel like an @$$ now for that comment I made on FB! ;)

But I have full confidence. As much as you did with the day job, you’ll be able to do so much more without it. Looking forward to great things J!

  128. Single Ma December 17, 2010 at 7:17 PM

You are amazing, J! I’m impressed, man. Highly impressed. Good luck to you and your new empire! You WILL succeed and do a fabulous job because failure is NOT an option. ^5!

  129. Migdalia December 17, 2010 at 7:24 PM

Thank God!, its not that being fired is a good thing but I always thought that you could have saved not only 50,000 but even 1,000,000 and you seemed so confortable in your job that you would never take this big step, now you are just starting a little bit before planned.

  130. Tomi December 17, 2010 at 7:37 PM

A good attitude is often when prepares us for life’s battles. Much success in your current endeavor.

  131. eemusings December 17, 2010 at 7:52 PM

What a story. I just know this is going to lead to bigger and better!

But more importantly…is that you flipping the bird in the picture??

  132. Alex December 17, 2010 at 7:59 PM

I’ve been a bit out of loop the last few days due to school stuff. I think it’s awesome you’re making this new life for yourself and going down the path you’d laid out for so long. Sucks it happened the way it did, but you’ve got your shit together! :D Congrats on the new path, sir!

  133. S December 17, 2010 at 8:37 PM

Sounds like a winner to me! Best of wishes to you and WELCOME to the crazy and insane! You know that’s what WE entrepreneurs really are…don’t you??!!

  134. Nick December 17, 2010 at 9:08 PM

J Money, my man! (As usual) I don’t have anything profound (or unique) to say. But I wanted to say to keep your head up. This was probably the kick you needed to start pimpin it on your own. Startups are Sexy too!

  135. GK December 17, 2010 at 9:44 PM

Keep in mind that, if you feel ambitious and depending on your location, you can get severance from the directors from the corporation. In most provinces, directors are jointly and severably and personally liable for unpaid salary (which includes severance), unpaid expenses and unpaid vacation. I had an employer go bankrupt out from under me, and it took a year or so, but the directors eventually settled for 80% of what I was owed (actually, me and a group of friends got together, that way we could split the legal costs and use one lawyer). You have to start by suing the corporation, and if you can’t get relief from them, then you go after the directors. In our case, the company was bankrupt, so once the bankruptcy judge said “all done”, it was a formality to sue the company, get told “no”, and then go after the directors.

  136. Lazy Man and Money December 17, 2010 at 10:11 PM

Losing my job was very the best thing that happened to me since I met my wife . I know it will be one of the best things that will happen to you.

  137. Chelle December 17, 2010 at 10:13 PM

Getting fired is the best thing that could ever happen to someone :)

  138. Jaime December 17, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Hey J. That really sucks dude. I think its cool how you’re trying to make the best of it. I like how you left work in a classy manner. I can’t believe they shut off your email just like that. Ugh. It just goes to show, a company only cares about the bottom line. There really is no employee loyalty. None whatsoever.

I work for a small company and even though they try to cultivate a culture of respect and we have employee benefits, etc. I know deep down that its really all about the company. It seems anyone from CEOs to the janitor is replaceable. But hey dude at least you have savings. I wish you the best, you seem like a nice person. :)

  139. Jen December 17, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Wow, J$, crazy post! I absolutely LOVE your attitude about all this and how you treated everyone after the fact…I mean, I think even if you hadn’t been saving and preparing for this day, you’d still have that attitude about it. Someone raised you right! I’m just going to repeat what others have said about looking back on this day…you will….and you will smile…no matter what happens. When my husband lost his job, we realized if we cut way back, he was able to stay home with our kids. How special and awesome is that?!?! Not many people can say that anymore. But we can!! And how many late-twenty-somethings (did you hit the big 3-0 yet??) can say they are able to do what you’re about to do? Not many!!!! But you can!! See…you’re already smiling. :)

  140. Financial Samurai December 17, 2010 at 10:22 PM

I’m pumped for you man! This will be great for you and for the readers!

I’m sure you will do well, and enjoy the freedom!

    Cheers

  141. Brian December 17, 2010 at 10:50 PM

Hell yeah, this is hands-down the best “I got fired” post ever! You’ll be kicking ass like a boss for real now. There’s no way this turns sour for you in the long run with your attitude. Def make sure to start that freelance rate at triples on your old company.

  142. Bobby December 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM

J, I know the feeling. Hope things work out for you and it seems like you have a solid plan.

My employer went bankrupt December 23 last year, took me a little while to find a job but it was worth it. I wouldn’t be where I was today if it weren’t for them going bankrupt.

  143. Shaun December 17, 2010 at 11:13 PM

Sometimes you just need a kick in the pants to start making things happen for you. I have no doubt your new venture will do well. Look forward to looking back and thinking how lucky you were to give yourself this opportunity.

    Good luck!

  144. Mrs. Accountability December 17, 2010 at 11:17 PM

Wow. I love your attitude and restraint. I admire your ability to see best out of an undesirable situation.

I wish you much luck! I have a feeling you’ll be just fine.

  147. Charlie Mosez December 18, 2010 at 4:22 AM

    Hey J,

Don’t know if to say “bummer dude” or “congratulations!” Either way, I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years now and I know you’ll be successful in any future ventures. Keep doing what you’re doing and good luck!

Like others have said, this is probably the best thing that could’ve happened to you. I’m jealous and looking forward to the day when I can escape the rat race. I look forward to your progress to bigger and better things, man. Plus, you’re a hometown boy!

    Kick ass, J-Money!

  153. Money Reasons December 18, 2010 at 12:53 PM

Sounds like almost perfect timing! A severance package would have been sweet though!

Sounds like you might even be making more from your old employer (wouldn’t that be a great paradox lol).

I’m excited for you! Congrats being a full time entrepreneur!!!

  154. wldflr December 18, 2010 at 4:37 PM

J$…great posting, really. From someone who got laid off a year ago due to the banking fiasco but I’m still here and like you, I squirreled away $ knowing the end was coming to my fabulous job and salary.

You handled your exit with class and grace. One thing I tell people over and over is to avoid burning bridges no matter what. It’s amazing how many times you’ll cross paths with the same people in your career.

Can’t wait to read about the NEW adventures of JMoney! Go get’em tiger!

  155. Sallie's Niece December 18, 2010 at 6:38 PM

Crazy but exciting! Good luck J!

  156. Money Rabbit December 18, 2010 at 6:44 PM

Good luck, JMoney!!! I’m so excited for the day I’ll finally be my own boss … call it destiny!

  157. akilah December 18, 2010 at 7:12 PM

I’m sorry but really wanna say congrats on your new journey! You’ve been a great inspiration in building wealth and thinking smarter about my money. I’m getting laid off and have been plotting how life will be afterwards and this post just lit a fire under me and plan is coming together.

    I wish you continued success!

  158. Fred Schebesta December 18, 2010 at 9:35 PM

    Big J Money!
Bro, welcome to the Rebels, the Shakers and the Money Makers!

Hit me up if you wanna talk through anything and perhaps lets catch up in Vegas?

  159. Funny about Money December 18, 2010 at 10:55 PM

“What do you say when that happens to you?”

Well…how about DANCE TO SPRING! or maybe FREE AT LAST!

You really handled that well. Highly professional, incredibly smart, and amazingly self-contained (I’d have been throttling someone). Now to get on with the good stuff… Hope you’re cranking six figures by the end of next year.

Congratulations! (I mean that. Working for the man, even with job security, sucks on wheels for most of us.)
I can’t be bothered to read through the 157 previous comments to see if someone touched on this, but…what’s the point of saying that you don’t want to burn bridges if you admit one sentence later that you’d be fine punching the guy who fired you in the face?

  161. JB December 19, 2010 at 2:43 AM

Their loss for sure J. Money. You are obviously on the road to bigger and brighter things!!!

  162. Fig December 19, 2010 at 4:44 AM

Usually when someone gets fired everyone is sad. In this case? We all are happy for you. It’s time to chase your dreams my friend!

  163. Monroe on a Budget December 19, 2010 at 12:17 PM

Wow. Even though you rose to the challenge, it’s still a stressful situation. Treat it accordingly!

  164. Cris Fisher December 19, 2010 at 1:01 PM

Congrats on the beginnings of your new empire! I’d wish you luck, but I think you’re making your own ;-D

  165. Stacy December 19, 2010 at 5:25 PM

Good luck J$! We all love you and you’ll do AWESOME!!!!

  166. Andi B. @ Modern Tightwad December 19, 2010 at 6:20 PM

I just wanted to add my congrats to the chorus. Make life your b$*ch! And as always, let us know how we can support you.

  167. Uniquely Me December 19, 2010 at 9:28 PM

I’m excited for you(and a little bit jealous)! Good luck with in the entrepreneur world.

  168. Nate St. Pierre December 19, 2010 at 11:04 PM

Love ya, bro – let’s do this!

  169. Christine December 20, 2010 at 12:28 AM

Crazy story! But congrats and good luck!!!!

  170. lurker December 20, 2010 at 4:51 AM

Good for you. All your saving and hard work puts you in a great position. My best wishes to you.

  171. Christian Niklaus December 20, 2010 at 8:56 AM

Dude… I’m so about to go through the same things. After 29 1/2 yrs I was served notice that I’ll be let go after the 1st Quarter of 2011. Over 25 of my fellow employees have to 01.01.2011. We found this out last Monday along with a speech on the Proper Behavior of departing from the company. The real kicker was the ‘Christmas Party Invitations’ they gave us the following day.

Your continued success and insight will encourage MANY…. Myself Included!!!!

  172. Devin December 20, 2010 at 9:46 AM

J, we were talking about changes in focus last time we met up. Seems like the universe wants you to be rolling on the entrepreneurship side of things. If you need any help maneuvering through the DC Regulatory system, or anything else, you know how to reach me.
Peace and Happy Holidays with your Mrs. Money.

  173. The Financial Blogger December 20, 2010 at 10:26 AM

Well, well, well, wake-up call that is indeed my friend! I almost (I said almost) envy you! I do not wish to get fired right now of course, but I would just did like you did. I would dedicate myself to my blogs and make out the best of it! So, I don’t say I feel bad for you, cause I really don’t! ;-) I am sure you’ll make your way through and that you’ll enjoy it. Probably the best that could happen to you! Go for it man!
    Cheers! :-)

  174. Goner December 20, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Happened to me. Got canned 9 years ago. Was nearly flat broke. Moved abroad… started business. $600K saved. So far. And I’m a dummy too. If I can do it, anyone can.

  175. Jonathan December 20, 2010 at 10:53 AM

This is the best post I’ve read in a long time. :) Can’t wait to follow your story!

  176. Kyle December 20, 2010 at 11:17 AM

Congratulations! I’m hoping to get laid off myself in the next few months.

  177. Ashley December 20, 2010 at 3:35 PM

Best of luck to you J$! You were prepared and you are ready to rock!

This reminds me that I need to get my own alternate cash flow ideas out of my head and into reality.

  178. Fanny December 20, 2010 at 3:41 PM

Congrats on this opportunity! I’m on that path too, of being a full time blogger after I was laid off. I also believe in not burning bridges. You never know…

  179. FIRE Finance December 20, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Hey Buddy, welcome to the new life. All the best! You’ll do well and hopefully will have nothing to regret about. Being an entrepreneur is the best thing that could happen to anyone. Wish you tonnes of success :)!. Happy holidays ahead.

    Cheers,
    Mr. & Mrs. FIRE

  180. Budgeting in the Fun Stuff December 20, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are where I want to be in one year! I hope it’s only freaking rainbows and sunshine for you!!!

  181. Rob Bennett December 20, 2010 at 5:38 PM

I wish you the best, Jay.

The “Is that the seat for fired people?” line made me laugh.

    Rob

  182. Jessica07 December 20, 2010 at 8:37 PM

Wow. Money Cactus wasn’t joking–this post did get a lot of responses!

This was the first time I read about someone getting fired, that I was actually left with the desire to say, “Congratulations!” I guess everything does happen for a reason; you seem to be much better off now. Talk about landing on all fours!

From one entrepreneur to another, WELCOME! :)

  183. Jim Smith December 20, 2010 at 9:20 PM

It will turn out to be one of the best things that ever happened in your life. Your site is great – have no fear about turning this into your full time job. You are probably far better at writing about fun budgets in any case. Good luck with it all.

  184. Jacob @ My Personal Finance Journey December 20, 2010 at 9:43 PM

Wow! This is quite a story! I’m glad I got to read it. Best of luck with your full time blogging endeavors!

  185. Rob December 20, 2010 at 9:50 PM

Well I’m 3 days late to the party, but J$ I have no doubt you’ll make it work. You’re good with money, have plenty saved up, and most important, you’re a bad sumbitch. I’ve never seen anyone take getting canned just before Christmas so well – if that isn’t a sign, I don’t know what is!

No worries buddy, you’re gonna make it work, and you’ll be happier than ever. Merry Christmas dude, and don’t forget to take a little time off before ramping up the biz.

  186. Kellen December 21, 2010 at 10:03 AM

Wow! This makes me want to prepare a what-if-I-get-fired plan right away so my experience can be as positive ;). You may be freaking out a bit more than you let us know in this article, but I bet you’ll make something great from this. And $4,000 away from your $50,000 goal is not too shabby, considering you didn’t get to decide when it was time to quit!

What kind of freelance services are you offering now? Where can we find them?

  187. DH @ The Money Blog Revisited December 22, 2010 at 5:38 PM

I’m really sorry to hear about your job, J. Money. But I have now doubt, that if anyone can make it big time as an entrepreneur, it’s you. :) I really like your kick-ass positive attitude about the whole thing. I definitely KNOW that you’ll succeed. :)

  188. Dorethia Conner December 22, 2010 at 5:49 PM

Awesome! Congrats to you for being prepared for this fateful day!!

  189. J. Money December 22, 2010 at 8:41 PM

THANK YOU!!!!

PS: No, that is not me flicking the bird ;)

  190. Mick December 24, 2010 at 8:39 AM

There’s always someone who’s willing to duplicate what you do for less $$ and those who are overpaid (CEO) for doing less. It’s called “global capitalism”!

  191. Diane December 24, 2010 at 11:31 AM

I got laid off 7 years ago, and used it as the spring pad to start my own gig. Never been happier, even over the past year with almost no work. Sure, you have to build up a mega-emergency fund for fallow times such as the last year, but overall it has been WONDERFUL. No more annual reviews, no sword hanging over my head, no boss per se (just clients who do need some hand-holding and flattering at times).

I wish you much luck – go forward bravely! Your attitude rocks and will make all the difference.

  192. stefanie g December 24, 2010 at 1:34 PM

So excited for you! Looking forward to reading your blog and hearing about your stunning sccess, which is sure to come!

  193. BeatingTheIndex December 27, 2010 at 7:13 AM

That’s the spirit to have when one loses his job, don’t look back just charge ahead!

if you’re passionate about what you want to do, you will succeed. Go for it man!

  194. Everyday Tips December 27, 2010 at 8:29 AM

I am sure it is a bummer to be let go, especially because you always had such a good attitude about your job. However, you will have a good attitude about whatever you do, and I think it will be a fantastic opportunity for you. You have been preparing for it, you are ready, it just kind stinks when it isn’t your choice.

You are going to do great!

  195. Jan December 27, 2010 at 9:17 AM

The call for help does not surprise me. My husband still gets those calls a year later!

Congrats on the not so new adventure. Going from part time to full time is wonderful when it is something you enjoy!

  196. J. Money December 28, 2010 at 4:07 PM

Thx guys :) It was certainly the push I needed! (and the peace of mind too – much better not wondering “what if” anymore – it’s time to LIVE it!)

  197. Miss T December 30, 2010 at 11:39 AM

Sometimes you just need a nudge to push you in the right direction. Congratulations on your new adventure..I am sure it will be successful. Best of luck in 2011 and thanks for writing because I love your blog.

  198. Chris Parsons December 30, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Congratulations! It may not be exactly according to plan, but 5 years from now you will look back at this as the best thing to ever happen to you!

  199. J. Money December 30, 2010 at 3:32 PM

I don’t need 5 years, I already know it’s the best thing ;) Thx for all your support!

  200. Brian Glick January 2, 2011 at 12:30 PM

This is crazy! The exact same thing happened to me this past week (except I got fired over the phone after 11 years). I had the exact same reaction, and am putting my business plan into action on Monday. I hope you genuinely feel as free and excited as I do. Congratulations and best of luck.

  201. Divas With Cents January 3, 2011 at 3:07 PM

I love the new “Headquarters”! ;o) Good for you and good luck!!

  202. Mick January 3, 2011 at 3:16 PM

You’re in big financial trouble dude and should start planning accordingly. Having a plan B is great, but it probably won’t work as it’s a plan B.

  203. J. Money January 3, 2011 at 11:37 PM

@Brian Glick – Ouch. Over the phone is harsh. Welcome to the club, sir! :)
    @Divas With Cents – Thanks!
@Mick – That may be true, but only one way to find out ;)

  204. Cardeni January 17, 2011 at 10:14 PM

Not sure how I ended up at your post, but it is what I needed tonight. Congrats and good luck.

  205. J. Money January 17, 2011 at 10:45 PM

    Glad I could help ;)

  206. Shawanda February 12, 2011 at 11:17 PM

Okay, I’m ridiculously late on this one, but I have to say something. CONGRATULATIONS! Best of luck to ya!

  207. J. Money February 14, 2011 at 6:39 PM

Hey Shawanda! Thanks so much — it’s nice to see ya here :) We should grab a drink/coffee sometime soon, it’s been a while! Hope things are well my friend.

  208. Jonha (@jonharules) September 5, 2011 at 12:15 AM

Hahaha! Re: I wish I could get fired each week – well, you can always fire yourself since you are your own boss ;) Seriously, this is one of the most REAL and inspiring (at the same time) post about getting fired. Yep, the most sexy snappy post, I must say!

  209. J. Money September 5, 2011 at 1:57 PM

Thanks Jonha! So nice of you to say :) I love your recent post w/ Brad’s bumper sticker on your head! Haha… keep on making things interesting.

  210. Derek - BankAim September 20, 2011 at 2:16 PM

This is awesome! This was going to happen to me.. I knew my boss was going to fire me, but that’s because I came into work too early and left by noon every day. I was paid salary and as long as I got my jobs done, who cared? Obviously my boss.. said it was a safety concern.

Anyways she called me into her office to reprimand me. She never really got the chance as I put my two weeks in.. made her cry. But have been working for myself ever since.

  211. J. Money September 21, 2011 at 12:59 PM

haha… why did it make her cry? cuz she was losing one of her best employees? not sure what you were doing back then, but that’s pretty impressive if you could get all your work done by noon. makes you wonder how much time we really waste on any given work day ;)

  212. Ryan @ Budgetable October 5, 2011 at 10:46 PM

Finally read this post after eyeballing it for a few weeks. Cool story (too soon?..hahah) Anyways, very smart of you to make sure you didn’t burn any bridges after it happened… Most people don’t have that foresight.. :)

  213. J. Money October 6, 2011 at 6:08 PM

Hey, thanks :) It’s hard for me to be mad or spiteful for very long anyways, so I’ve learned to just be cool with things from the start as much as possible…. it’s actually rather annoying, haha… but here we are 9 months later and I couldn’t be happier w/ job stuff! It was a pleasure meeting you in real life this weekend my man, let’s def. do again soon :)

  214. Financial Samurai February 14, 2012 at 9:52 AM

    Hola J,

Just re-read this post. How quickly time flies huh? Any new insights on preparation, thoughts, things to do now that it’s been over a year?

    Thanks! Sam

  215. J. Money February 14, 2012 at 7:25 PM

Yo! Man, you’re not kidding – time goes by incredibly fast! And you wanna know what’s funny? I’m only just NOW feeling like a full-time blogger ;) How crazy is that? It literally just sunk in, haha…

And yeah, it’s def. as awesome as I had hoped it would be. It’s kinda strange not seeing people every single day like you do at a 9-5, but interacting with you all online makes a huge difference in keeping me sane ;) The other biggest difference I’ve seen is that when you work for yourself you tend to OVER do it too. There are times I’ll sit here for 15-16 hours straight and realize I haven’t left the house and/or eaten all day. There’s no more structure to my day, or anyone telling me to do anything or be somewhere. So I had to adjust to that most recently and force myself to take breaks and to NOT work as hard. But at the end of the day it’s all fun stuff and goes back to the company of YOU, so I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I don’t think it’s for everyone though – you gotta be crazy motivated, and it’s not always all rainbows and smiles. Your post on going out on your own was spot on the other day – I enjoyed it :)

  216. Melissa April 18, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Hey J$! I just got let go at my full time gig. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing next, but reading your post definitely inspires me.

  217. Jaymie December 17, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Wow, you will definitely be successful with that attitude!

Happy 2 years later by the way!

  218. J. Money December 17, 2012 at 2:27 PM

Yes! Thank you! I just realized we hit 2 years this morning :) About to write up a blog post on it all here soon, woohoo!

  219. Pamela June 11, 2013 at 4:07 PM

So many disguised blessings, it is funny!! Keep on going forward…the only viable direction. Blessings to you and the family!

    1. J. Money June 13, 2013 at 9:10 AM

Indeed! Almost 2 and 1/2 years now since this happened and couldn’t be happier with the situation :) Life works in funny ways!

  220. Buck Inspire October 30, 2013 at 5:48 AM

Late to the party J$, but still an awesome read! Found this classic from Anton’s Dreams Cash True. No regrets eh? Funny how life works. Hope you had a great FinCon! What’s next?

    1. J. Money October 30, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Hey man! You can never be late to a working-for-yourself party – it’s always fun to reminisce :) You should totally come out to the next FINCON too – it’s great there! We have an awesome community, and it’s nice to be surrounded by like minded people (who actually *understand* what you do!) for an entire weekend. Put it on your calendar for next year! :)

      Here’s what’s next: RockstarFinance.com

Where I curate my favorite financial articles from around the web and promote the crap out of them ;) Turns out that’s a lot more fun than always pimping out my own stuff, haha… and it keeps me networking!

Shoot me a line some time – would love to hear more about what you’re doing too: j @ budgets are sexy (dot) com. Thanks for dropping by.

  221. Kim April 24, 2014 at 3:23 PM

Hey J$! I just found your website and this post. I know a while has passed since you wrote it, but I still wanted to say congratulations because your are following your dream and succeeding at it. I was scapegoated out of a position i held for four years. Had planned to leave, but was pushed out first (was trying to hang in there for another 6-9 months). That’s just the way works out, right? At my former job I was well paid and terribly miserable. I’m talking “can’t wait for Fridays and crying starting 2pm on Sunday because I have to go to work on Monday, and a nervous stomach all day every week day” type miserable. But I held my head up and never let them know they were getting to me. When I went to sleep the night after my firing (which was technically me resigning because they were oh so king to give me a choice – negotiated a better package by resigning), I swear to you that it was the best, most peaceful night’s sleep I’d had since before I started working there.

I’d been “playing” around online saying that I wanted to do it professionally. My husband and I talked and he is totally supportive of me going for it. So I am. Have had to cut back (A LOT), and I (try not to (worry) about the money because I knew my new venture would take time. But most importantly I am incredibly happy.

So glad to have found your inspirational, aspirational, and motivational website. It’s one of the thongs that keeps me hanging in there and pursuing my dream. Continued success to you!

    1. J. Money April 26, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Hey Kim! Thanks so much for stopping by and the kind words – you totally made my Saturday! :)

Glad to hear you were pushed out and ready to do your own thing too. It’s crazy exciting and scary at the same time, right? Haha… It’s been over 3 years now since leaving a “real job” and it’s been incredible. Ups and downs and all kinds of sideways, but I’ve never learned this much in my life. I really hope you find the same :)

If you ever want to chat or ask me any questions, please shoot me an email (j@budgetsaresexy.com). Good luck! It makes life interesting!

  222. FI Pilgrim July 8, 2014 at 8:16 AM

J$, this was like reading a post from an alternate universe version of myself… I’m also saving (paying off mortgage) in anticipation of going into freelance web design and network/server consulting next year, probably around February/March. Now I’m thinking “When do I get fired?”…

    1. J. Money July 8, 2014 at 9:21 AM

Sometimes you get what you’re asking for when you least expect it ;)

  223. icebiker November 7, 2014 at 3:51 PM

Note to self: The day the checks dont clear IS the last day of employment.

    1. J. Money November 10, 2014 at 2:59 PM

Probably a safe bet… or at least after the 2nd time it happens :)

  224. Financedin January 10, 2015 at 11:21 AM

Great story and good job for being financially prepared. How has it been, any new updates?

    1. J. Money January 31, 2015 at 8:49 PM

Four years later and we’re still blogging full-time and having a blast :) Although it does get harder when you start having kids and can’t hustle 24/7, haha…

  225. Megan February 20, 2015 at 8:20 PM

This is soo similar to the story we just experienced with my husband. He too served 5 years at our local eye bank and much like you, was doing what he was to do…following protocol and his boss called two hours later cussing at him. She had done this before when she didn’t feel control so as nervous as we were, we thought it was a quick temper tantrum that would blow over. It wasn’t. She continued to let him go by providing an email to all of the 7 staff members that he CHOSE to quit. The kicker came a few weeks later when he was denied unemployment due to her twisted version of what occurred. She placed him at the bank at a different time with a different outcome. The only reference he made was during that conversation which she called cussing at him…he warned her that he would place his two week notice in if she continued to cuss and name call him.

He too desired to quit THIS year…he has a master’s degree he was unable to use there and promotions he was promised that never followed through. Ugly place. We pray a job that fits his skill set comes soon. I’m faithful it is and if anything, we’ll joyfully look back and smile…we hope.

    1. J. Money February 23, 2015 at 7:43 AM

What a nasty way to depart :( But the world works in mysterious ways, I’ll give it that much. Sending nothing but positive thoughts your – and his – way that a new path forms itself here shortly :) Let us know how it goes!

  226. "Mad" Max Speedwell December 1, 2015 at 3:12 PM

    Fired? Not me! No way!
I was (oh… get ready for this) “right-sized”.

    We were:
    *Pink-slip proof
    *Recession proof
    *Inflation proof
*Work proof (we hardly did any) ;-O

Then one day a guy I worked closely with was
called into the office. He was gone in minutes!!
A few minutes later all the locks were changed.
Too bad. He was about 18- 24 months from
retirement. He had worked there just short of
thirty years but like management says, “Isn’t
    thirty years long enough?”

It was hard to leave so suddenly but those who stayed
found it more miserable to stay. Thirty+ people. Dwindling,
dwindling down…. They are now (after the “merger”) down
to nineteen people. Looks like two more could be gone before
the end of 2015. This is December…. “Merry Christmas! Now,
    get out!”

    -Max

  227. J. Money December 2, 2015 at 7:01 AM

Hey! You found an oldie but goodie here :) Hard to believe it’s been 5 years since this fateful day, wow… And even harder to believe I’m still bogging full-time! A miracle for someone who naturally isn’t a writer – hah!

Been enjoying our discussions back and forth lately – thx for always giving me interesting things to ponder.

  228. BeSmartRich December 9, 2015 at 3:32 PM

Well I was laid off once and the job I had paid me ok salary. Moved to Toronto and got paid 70% higher salary. Promoted twice since then and now makes about 2.9 times higher than the job that I was laid off of. This is life. Opportunities are everywhere even when you think times are really really bad. Thanks for sharing your story.

    BSR

    1. J. Money December 9, 2015 at 10:21 PM

      Indeed!

It’s been almost exactly 5 years since this fateful day and been blogging full-time ever since :) Can’t complain!

  229. Financial Canadian August 8, 2016 at 10:54 AM

    Hey J. Money!

First-time commenter here. This post makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because it’s amazing that you’ve come so far in 5.5 years, but sad that this had to happen to you. Congratulations on making the best of your situation – it is truly inspiring!

    1. J. Money August 8, 2016 at 11:06 AM

Thanks for stopping by! Hard to believe it’s now been 6 years since this happened… Still self-employed! :)

  230. Rena August 17, 2016 at 10:23 PM

I just found your blog on a post I was reading on mic.com and I have to say, this is the most entertaining yet informative personal financial blog I’ve ever read! Your story is amazing. I’m also currently starting my own blog and hope to get far in a few years just like you. Must be nice to look back and see how far you’ve come. Good job!!!

    – Rena

    1. J. Money August 18, 2016 at 6:30 AM

Hey, thanks so much! It’s been a helluva journey so far, and you learn a ton doing this stuff for a living. I hope you really enjoy it and your blog takes off as well!

  231. Grant October 9, 2016 at 11:48 PM

I love the attitude of your blog J. I’ve been a reader for awhile and this is the first time I read this post – just noted it as one of the most popular. Nice to see it still live after 6 years! Thanks for all you do and inspiring us personal finance bloggers to tell our own stories. Thanks man.

    1. J. Money October 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Haha… yeah – I remember that day pretty vividly!

Sometimes getting fired is the best thing that can happen to you; in my case, it led me out of a job I had started to hate.

      Agreed!

Amazing how life works out sometimes :)

    J,

This is the first time I read this post. I just found your site last week. I have to say, it felt right in line with what I’m going through. I work for the DoD and our budget expires Friday. Either the president signs a new budget, or we get furloughed.

When I was reading your post, I felt as if I was about to get the push I wasn’t sure I was prepared to make.

Glad it turned out well for you!!

I hope it pushes you in whichever direction makes you most happiest! Big decisions are sometimes nice when others make it for you ;) Though only if it was something you really wanted deep down, haha… It’s been a fun (and wild) 6 years since first posting this. Still just as glad, if not more, that it happened!

Wow that is an amazing story! It just goes to show that having a plan A, B, C … is a great idea … it also goes show that one saving an emergency after reducing debts is highly, and having an energetic positive outlook helps you to move to the next thing etc … if your readers are interested in living overseas …. I mention some of the zillions of ops available in teaching and later other areas etc etc … your blog is very encouraging and colourful – CPO, From the Far Side of the Planet

Ha, the first time I read this post a few years ago, I thought this was what you looked like in real life ;-)

Don’t worry – a lot of people thought I did :) I was pretty tricky back then haha… (and a lot more anonymous! so i wouldn’t get in trouble for such things while at work!)

Sad to say this is all too common in tech. I went thru six of these shutdowns/downsizings in a 35 year career. Folks at the top always take care of themselves first. I especially remember a company where upper management routinely awarded themselves double digit bonuses and pay raises while worker bees endured repeated layoffs and wage freezes.

As for deferring paychecks for two months, well, you can’t be serious. But a little surprised there weren’t signs of trouble before disaster struck.

Oh yeah – def. serious and there were def. signs too! I was very fortunate to leave with only 2 weeks of lost paycheck… Been self-employed ever since too – almost 8 years now! :)

At this point, when I get a new job I almost just assume eventually I’ll get fired and it’s only a matter of time. Might be my natural course of how to move on. Interviewing is hard when you’re working full time. Quitting is a bit scary as you are cutting off your income and you’re force to be accountable since it’s your decision. Getting fired is the guilt free way to cut the cord and do it with the safety net of unemployment income. My next job is my last I think. In the mean time, I’ve created a resource for people that get fired on a blog called Getting Canned. (I guess that domain could be taken another way right?…Maybe someday I’ll get an offer for the domain from someone catering to the fetish.)

Hah! Nice… guess there’s a blog for everything these days :)

I can instantly relate to you, as getting fired may lead to beginning of a new chapter in your life. If you were not fired then, things would not have been same
